It's cool and all, but I'm surprised it's not 10% at this point. Microsoft is shitting in their customers mouth and Apple is a luxury brand at this point.

Microsoft has gone too far: including a Game Pass ad in the Settings app ushers in a whole new age of ridiculous over-advertising ( www.techradar.com )

Windows 11 is getting out of hand with its push for advertisments, frankly - remember the recent full-screen pop-up to persuade users to install Edge or other Microsoft services? Then another advertisment was placed in the Start menu, and now Microsoft has finally worn my temper thin - with a new Game Pass ad coming to the...

You guys complain but you never actually switch to Linux. :)

If you truly cared about being a technological slave, you would learn Linux tomorrow. But just like someone stuck in a abusive relationship, you hang around despite the horrible treatment because you are afraid to leave what's comfortable.

I dont agree, I use the left lane frequently to not have a car in front of me. Increases visibility and security a lot, and just gives a nice feeling of not being blocked.

I do drive a bit faster than cars in the right lane almost always though.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

No I drive fast enough to never have cars behind me. :) So Im actually not part of the problem the thread was discussing, with drivers just driving the same speed in the left lane. That is really frustrating when people do that.

I would go as far as saying that this behavior of driving faster in the left lane helps to make traffic flow a lot better and avoid congestion. But it's not legal.

I love plasma. It's no longer even buggy for me, and it's really fast and beautiful. You know they are doing something right when windows and Mac users are impressed by it.

It doesn't quite beat mac in terms of looks but it's just so much more powerful.

This release is super important for Nvidia users to try.

Sure, if we didn't have the need to procreate or the need for a life companion, the computer would be the perfect partner.

But since we are not machines quite yet...

I banned my daughter from using the iPhone she bought. It made her a better person | Em Rio ( www.theguardian.com )

I think its not just kids anymore, it's adults too. Everyone is glued to their screens these days. But kids are more vulnerable to influences from "social" media and don't have any defences to the psychological warfare going on. Of course they feel like shit.

When you stopped caring about staying in good shape?

I completely stopped caring about 2 years ago, I realized I was never going to do anything with my good look and that I will never get into a relationship in my life, so I just figured out "what's the point then, I'm already invisible to women?" And I don't care about my health tbh......

Yeah, for me I don't use any Google apps except Maps, but they are still on my phone, and can't be removed.

It's sad that all of us are carrying around all these apps that we didn't choose, and that we don't want or use.

Makes me again consider cyanogenmod... But had some issues without the Google shit on it.

How to spot autism in High Masking Autistic Women - What’s behind the mask? -- Autism from the Inside ( youtu.be )

I think that this video has helped me develop some insight on how to spot high-masking autism, not just among women. I found a lot of the material covered in the video relatable even though I am male. Maybe that has something to do with our elevated rejection of established gender roles as a whole. Regardless, I like how...

I think you misunderstood what he is saying. Maybe read it again. Not everyone who says they are autistic is actually autistic. It's a diagnosis made by a doctor.

I think today it's more and more common that young people just try to decide what they are themselves, and gets surprised when doctors don't agree with them. It's like if I would decide that im color blind despite being able to see all colors just fine.

I would like to understand how they infer these things without becoming a science major. Is it just math equations based on what they think is the distance to the planet and then more math based on what they think the atmosphere is, and so on? Because they can't actually see the planet.

Well not when it's a company that people can't get away from. Big tech is so big and there are so few alternatives that they can treat people how they like.

We are living in the mega corp world now where they have more money than countries.

Money is power to make the rules what you want.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Sounds like you haven't seen this happen before.. This is a typical pattern in IT. Sites will come and go. It's a good thing that people take action when they are not happy. Reddit exploited users and moderators to work for free, then sold their data.

This is several days too late news... But sure.

What is the Legal copyright on a Lemmy Post?

Most instances don't have a specific copyright in their ToS, which is basically how copyright is handled on corporate social media (Meta/X/Reddit owns license rights to whatever you post on their platform when you click "Agree"). I've noticed some people including Copyright notices in posts (mostly to prevent AI use). Is this...

I don't think actresses are worth more than ordinary people but sure, I get what you are saying.

Big tech fucks everyone over, as usual.

Does anyone else ever just realize that you're not even sure why you want a relationship at all?

As I've gained more and more close friends, more than I've ever had in my life, and some closer than I've ever had in my life, I've come to realize something recently. Despite the prevailing feeling like I want a relationship, I don't actually know why it is I want one, nor what I have to gain from one....

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

People get into relationships for sexual reasons, no?

And then they get tired of eachother. Ive realized that some people don't like the person they are with very much. It's just too much work to switch them out, and you lose other things you want (like children, the house, money etc) if you break up with them. And you have to find someone new, which is very difficult today for a lot of people.

I wonder if even most people are slightly unhappy with their partner and they don't feel emotionally connected.

So I don't think it's wrong to skip all that and focus on great friends. But friends often get into relationships and you lose out on the friendship when that happens.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah I know what you mean. There is a certain kind of girl that gives off that vibe. I've often wondered if it's intentional or not.

But if you are that kind, you have to put in extra effort to make friends. My girlfriend has "resting bitch face" as she calls it. When she looks serious, she looks a bit angry. It also turns people off until she starts to talk to them.

People like Elon Musk as exactly like the kid in the sandbox who wanted the entire sandbox for himself, and who would fight for all sandboxes in the yard despite not being able to use them.

That kind of personality will take all until nothing is left.

But yeah, I recently moved away from these cloud services and have a Nas at home now. Only encrypted backups in cloud. Because fuck Google.

Google is not showing the web anymore, it's showing it's own content now, stolen from the web.

People don't even leave their site now with Ai results, that Google controls and can modify how they want.

Not sure what to do about this. The general public will be completely lost in Google.

I think it's the same echo chamber here, but it's smaller. People block instances they don't like, and are in favor of moderators removing controversial things, specially around communism and tankies.

I just like that it's not run by big tech. Just discussions, no companies or ads. I think most users are tech people.

This may surprise you, but in Lua!

I used to be a big user of neovim and heavily into plugins and messing with my configs, and lua is the language built into neovim for doing things like that.

One of my neovim plugins had annoying bugs due to evolving to support more and more features, and it was time for a rewrite to make it all clean again.

As someone who is aging. Late thirties. How can I keep my finger on the pulse of current trends, particularly in music?

As an example. I grew up in hip-hop but at a certain point I stopped listening to new people and realised recently that I’d slept on some bangers. Like Kendrick particularly, but even people like Juice WRLD and Xxxtentacion....

Late thirties is aging? That's like peak life. You have money and family (at least a chance of that) and purpose in your life. You have confidence and you know who you are.

You are still a bit dumb, but less dumb than twenty somethings. I liked my late thirties.

It's absolutely slower. There is no way to make a network request faster than a function call. It's slower by probably thousands of times.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah it's insane. But of course if scaling different parts of the application, I guess micro services are the way to do it. But otherwise one could scale the entire app by just putting more of the entire app on servers. No need for micro services. It just needs to be written to be able to listen to message queues and you can have any number of app instances.

Yeah I've seen it before. It's a very good reminder for everyone to keep in mind isn't it. :)

There must be a better middle ground for all of this.
