Edit: Ah. Better drilling techniques, ironically, pioneered by the fossil fuel industry!
Latimer and his colleagues improved on traditional geothermal techniques in several ways. But the biggest was this: They utilized horizontal drilling, boring about 10,000 feet down and then 5,000 feet to the side with each well. The technology has been around for decades, but it’s gotten a lot less expensive since the mid-2000s due to widespread adoption by oil and gas companies.
Nice that this drilling technology can be used in green energy applications too.
I must admit that the details of how the fields are coupled went over my head, but I found the rest of the video quite accessible. Professor Copeland is a joy to listen to, and Brady asks great questions as usual....
Not very practical, but the chemistry is interesting. Producing a strong acid from a weak acid by using precipitation as the driving force is something I don't see very often.
Currently, the highest Q value obtained from a tokamak is 1.53
I'm pretty sure this is the value of Q achieved by the National Ignition Facility, which uses inertial confinement, not a tokamak. As far as I know, the record Q for a tokamak is still only 0.67, set by the Joint European Torus back in 1997.
I've been using this app for a few months and really enjoy it, but I haven't been able to find a way to change the default download folder for images and videos. Is there an option for this that im missing? I use the same folder for most other apps and this one being separate is a minor inconvenience.
Related but slightly more ambitious request. It would also be cool if we could also change the app install location to external storage (micro SD card).
From the title, I assumed that the algae would be burned as a carbon-neutral biofuel, but it's more interesting than that. They seem to be trying to tap into the electron transport chain to produce electricity directly.
After a year online the free speech-focused instance 'Burggit' is shutting down. Among other motivations, the admins point to grievances with the Lemmy software as one of the main reasons for shutting down the instance. In a first post asking about migrating to Sharkey, one of the admins states:...

Maven, a new social network backed by OpenAI's Sam Altman, found itself in a controversy today when it imported a huge amount of posts and profiles from the Fediverse, and then ran AI analysis to alter the content.
I was confused on what they were trying to accomplish, and even after reading the article I am still somewhat confused.
Instead, when a user posts something, the algorithm automatically reads the content and tags it with relevant interests so it shows up on those pages. Users can turn up the serendipity slider to branch out beyond their stated interests, and the algorithm running the platform connects users with related interests.
Perhaps I'm a minority, but I don't see myself getting much utility out of this. I already know what my interests are, and don't have much interest in growing them algorithmically. If a topic is really interesting, I'll eventually find out about it via an actual human.
I was also not aware of this. If the Lemmy software can do this, doesn't that mean there should be a way for apps and web interfaces to do this automatically?

Not if the instance has a backup admin who can take over hosting, domain, etc, which most large instances do. Very small instances usually have a poor bus factor.
