What's the most interesting traditional or formal politeness behaviour or table manners in your culture? Or for any service personnel, in your restaurant? ( kbin.social )

I love all the ritualized behaviour, secret meanings and unexpected taboos - standing up when someone of higher status stands, elaborate rules for serving and eating, tapping the table to thank the server, never refuse a toast from a superior, stuff like that....

“No elbows on the table” is one older one. I never really got it anyway

Everyone values different things. Personally, I'm not quite ready for kids (even though I'm past the age where my parents had kids and some of my friends/colleagues my age have kids, I'm about your age), but I'm ready to take on more at work. I find it rewarding and I can make more money. And although money doesn't create happiness, it buys some dope shit. And not advancing at work just gets boring and repetitive. Ig it's like that urban legend about sharks needing to swim...

It's easy to say: "other people do things because of pressure, I do things because I want to." But that kinda oversimplifies free will, power dynamics, and other similar concepts. Why is charity rewarding to you? Because someone gave you a pat on the back? Couldn't we boil it all down to extrinsic motivators? Some people might not feel good "giving away" their time to charity. You don't feel good having kids. It's all perspective.

Pretty sure the little slit was so that you could use a flathead screwdriver. Had to do that a couple times

How do I get my suit tailored?

I bought a cheap suit with the intention of making it look good through tailoring, but I don't know how to actually get that done. The local stores don't have websites and haven't picked up when I called, should I just walk in with the suit? Do I need an appointment? Also, how much should I expect to pay? (California)...

jeffw ,

Maybe this will be unpopular, but it’s probably not worth it if it’s a really cheap suit. If you’re buying a suit, make sure it’s 100% wool (yes, even a summer suit). My top recommendation for affordable suits is Suit Supply, if you have one around you. I believe they will do many or most simple adjustments for free, which makes the price tag pretty hard to beat for a good quality suit. Regardless of what you get, a high quality suit will last much longer and be more cost efficient in the long run.

Edit: I’ve heard mixed things about Indochino and never shopped with them, so I can’t comment, but that is another option.

It’s also important to buy a fit that you like. Some people think tailoring with fix anything, but it can’t. If you want a slim fit, don’t buy a classic fit suit.

Unless it’s a really nice tailor, you shouldn’t need an appointment.

FL also had a major measles outbreak and let the kids keep going to school

jeffw ,

If you can afford to, move somewhere more tolerant

jeffw OP ,

Far-right strongmen gotta stick together, amirite?

jeffw OP ,

Because that’s usually how you talk about news? It’s not that weird lol. Weirder when they say “the White House,” “Downing St,” etc.

jeffw ,

A 4060 isn’t really that impressive. It’s an 8gb card

jeffw ,

You guys are buying people $1000 gifts??

I commented something like this on a post about Hamas rapes in Israel, but it got removed for "defending genocide" or something:

Here's the thing about rape in war... it almost always happens. You'd be hard-pressed to find a war that doesn't involve mass rapes by both sides. Maybe this one was fabricated, but it is happening. One woman fabricating her story doesn't mean it isn't happening. It's a perennial problem.

Performance art is wild, often misunderstood. The entire point is to outrage men and he took the bait lol. The artist is clearly getting off on this, staging shit in even more locations because of the lawsuit.

jeffw ,

Art has bordered on what you’d call “trolling” for a while. Someone else in the comments referenced Duchamp’s Fountains

jeffw ,

Then you’d miss the entire point

jeffw ,

You don’t believe the entire artwork was about misogyny? Talk about woosh

The art clearly worked well, since you’re outraged

jeffw ,

What’s weird is that this comment was well upvoted yesterday. I think this thread is being brigaded. At least one account was made just to comment on this thread

jeffw ,

You made an alt account to comment on this thread bud, someone here pissed you off and I believe it was that guy

jeffw ,

Some guy made an alt to respond to your comments. Account was made like 12 hours ago lol

Oh boy, comparing feminism to nazis. We’ve gone full reddit

Nonprofits can’t lose money. They still got bills and are motivated by revenue. I say this as someone who has worked in non-profits for most of my adult life

jeffw , (edited )

For-profits don’t all have shareholders. Non-profits still have boards (and with non-profits it’s at times more difficult to rid your company of toxic board members). I’ve seen non-profits that move like snails and for-profits that move like cheetahs.

And I wouldn’t really say it’s easier, no. For two companies of the same size, I don’t think it would be any different just because you’re a public company. Plenty of them don’t mind posting a loss if they defend it with investments. Investors, especially institutional ones, don’t just look at revenue. Assets, liabilities, equity, it all frames investing decisions.

Stealing top posts of all time from Reddit and adding “or Lemmy” to the end? That’s a paddlin
