Are offline updates going to be the future?

I use PCLinuxOS as my primary Linux OS. They are a bit conservative to adapt new updates until they are sure of stability because of rolling nature. KDE is still at 5 there. Heard about Neon and wanted to try KDE 6. I find that they have adopted Windows style approach to updates where we need to reboot to apply the updates and...

@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

It does sound like a good idea.

Mid-update you can end up with broken dependencies and thus not fully working system. There may also be a problem with how programs update their config files.
This is especially true with big updates which is why Arch and Manjaro recommended to update from plain TTY during the Plasma 6 upgrade. Reboot, do not login, switch to TTY, stop the graphical login manager, just then proceed with upgrade.
A bit too much to ask for from regular users. Especially since it relies on them reading update announcements before each update.

Personally, I always close most stuff during updates. I even had terminal emulator itself die during update on Linux Mint.

A lot of websites do not know what wiki is supposed to be.

One Czech search engine has a wiki page which is actually just a list of repeatedly searched things, and it does include a lot of wild stuff.

There's one LED advertisement board in my area that I see pretty often. Nowdays I'd say it shows something it's not supposed to more often than an advertisement.

Previously I've seen BSOD on it a couple of times, but recently a lot. Also "Finish setting up this device" and part of the desktop showing Windows 11 wallpaper.
My guess is someone upgraded it from Windows 10 to 11, and now it works even less.

But anyway, Proton Mail allows importing e-mails from Google.

They just pull out of those states. How is that an attack?

user224 ,
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I don't for quite a while anymore, but I did longer than most others. I had to stop because people were laughing at me at that point as I was basically the only one.

I simply felt more comfortable with it. It felt good to have a large portion of my face covered, people not seeing all of my face, most of my face expression. I didn't have to worry if I got too carried away with my thoughts and imaginary conversations while walking in public so much that I started quietly whispering to myself, and of course moving my lips. Or doing something else weird like licking or biting my lips. Or inappropriately smiling against my will.

When I stopped wearing it, it basically felt like being naked in public. An awful feeling so bad I wished for another wave of the pandemic only so that masks would seem acceptable again.

Maybe I wasn't the only one. Perhaps it's such psychological thing for someone else.

@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Good idea.

You can still get the newest DD-WRT builds even on the WRT54G.
That is a Wi-Fi router from 2002.

Of course, the features are sort of limited. I tried the VPN build (on WRT54GL), but I couldn't get the OpenVPN client to connect. I found some thread mentioning it may be missing something, but I don't know if that's the issue.

Anyway, without overclocking I'd expect like 2Mbps. I mean, it barely handles HTTPS. Just trying to load the WebUI maxes out the CPU for several seconds if trying to use HTTPS.
Perhaps it's not missing anything software-wise, but it's just so slow it times out during handshake.
So I just put the std build on it in case it will be useful at some point.

Why do you need to post more?

Generally it just means spamming, better to restrict it.

user224 ,

I am not a programmer, I just barely wrote one bash script in the past. But I'd say more comments are better than too few.

When I later wanted to edit it, I got completely lost. I wrote it with absolutely no comments.

The trend has been blamed on the high cost of raising and educating children, and the lack of affordable housing

user224 ,
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Quite a memory from the childhood.

We were competing at who could smash into the wall with their bike at the highest speed. You know, just smashing into it with the front wheel, coming to a sudden stop.
Ouch.

Sup, targeted at women.

Like, how do you deal with menstruation when it's expected soon.
I mean, do you wear a tampon/pad/cup/whatever else there is in advance, just in case or...
I guess it can't be predicted to the minute.

I guess it qualifies as a weird question.

Never been high five rejected by a guy

And you also never met me (I am a guy too).
My response to unexpected fist bumps, high fives and handshakes is basically a silent "Huh?" before I figure out how to respond. Awkward 4 seconds. Oh, and I also likely forgot what I was thinking of and won't have a peace of mind until I remember it to finish the thought, but that has nothing to do with actually doing a high-five or not.

Does the USA have any open market cellular options that are legitimate pay-as-you-go and only for what you use options like Europe yet?

I've lived under a rock for 10 years. I did Metro ages ago while most were still on contracts. Surely we've reached true capitalist open market freedom by now. Is it still total closed market, noncompetitive, privateering corruption?

The unlimited data plan offers 35GB at full 4G LTE/5G speed with 5GB of hotspot included. Data speed is reduced after 35GB.

Wow. Truly unlimited. And how much does it get reduced?

Let's check ToS.

Your data speed will be reduced to lower speeds once you have used 35 GB of data in a billing period.

Uh, huh. Very precise information.
Also...

New and existing customers on qualifying plans including data have streaming video optimization technology automatically applied to our plans, and video is delivered at a lower resolution (typically 480p) rather than at a higher resolution which is better suited for larger screens. This helps customers stretch their Data Plans by reducing the amount of high-speed data consumed for streaming video.

What, how? How does that work?

Anyway, I am probably spoiled by Swan (4ka) in Slovakia.
It is the 4th carrier, weakening oligopoly of T-Mobile, O2 and Orange since 2015.
I have their unlimited data plan, which is 300GB, not 35GB, nor 5GB on hotspot. Of that I used 220GB so far in this month (usually I do around 100GB though). €13/month for me, €15 for new customers.
I am not even sure if limiting hotspot usage could be a thing in Europe. It sounds stupid enough.

None. All my playlists are fully unique, mostly because I am too lazy to actually make playlists.

There is a partial exception to it with one song: Louis Armstrong - When the saints go marching in
That is because I have 2 versions of it. One I ripped from YouTube in the past and like it more, and one I ripped from CD. The latter I keep in separate directory for album completion, just like culture mix of Big in Japan by Alphaville. I don't like it, but I have rest of the album (also ripped from CD by myself).

I do have playlists, I almost never listen to full albums (nearly all songs I download individually), but I do that by categorizing new songs into the most fitting directory, and that's it.

What song should I play for my bathroom neighbors?

The work bathroom is currently a warzone, on their phone speakers people like to play music, play games at full blast, and one guy likes to chill to ambient rainforest. What song can I play to passive aggressively make it known that I don't want to listen to their tik tok feeds while I work out my demons?

Newly released music.
I have access to internet, not just decades, but centuries of music. Why should I need to know the songs released this year? It's just a drop in the ocean. I don't need to have the newest music right away.

Similarly with new movies.

Did you by any chance get this conclusion from Instagram comments?

user224 ,
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Isn't that usually what happens though?

5G is the new best thing, people jump on 5G, 5G gets overloaded decreasing its speeds while 4G gets unloaded increasing its speeds.

Same thing it was with 4G, which is why I kept using 3G until start of 2024 when it got shut down here.

Definitely wouldn't want a dumbphone. Rather the opposite, like a super-smartphone, something like Raspberry Pi inside my pocket (PinePhone may be getting there).

This post got me to try installing Jellyfin server in Termux under proot, only to realize it's fairly useless for random videos and then wipe it 5 minutes later, but anyway that's the kind of things I do/want to do with my phone.
And hell, I'd definitely want a keyboard attachment like the PinePhone has.

Hmm, I just realized I paid more per envelope than per blank DVD.

Well, I was just thinking that I'd rather give them out for free, or the price of DVD + Case. So I thought I could save on cases by putting them in envelopes, but then I realized I paid 10¢ per SL DVD of which I have like 50 left and 23¢ per C5 envelope.
Kinda wild.

Although they are fairly low quality.

Depends on the file manager, nothing to do with Android. Which file manager do you use?

user224 ,

Oh, stuff in Android folder?

That's been restricted since I think Android 11.
You can still access it using a computer with MTP.

Though there may be some better solution I don't know of.

The last selling point of a Pixel was the quick updates and long update life

And I thought it was the ability to re-lock bootloader with a custom key which is why Graphene OS is only developed for Pixels.

What do you use ADB for?

Since adb backup has been deprecated, I don't see much use for it. Only for recent Android versions which disallow installation of apps targeting low API, as that can be bypassed using ADB.
Or maybe for apps like scrcpy.
