Phone Link is Microsoft's late and closed source alternative to KDE Connect. It requires you sign in to a Microsoft Account for it to work.

This means all the transactions between your phone and your PC are monitored and sucked up by Microsoft.

The only unique (I think?) thing about phone link is that it enables you to use your Android phone camera as a webcam, which can be handy if you don't have a quality webcam. I think its only in the beta version though.

1337x.to is generally fine to use, just be sure to check the notes on the Megathread and use your common sense.

Context

  • When signing up on the 1337x platform, it's crucial to bear in mind that it's accessible to all users.
  • The act of downloading movies and TV shows is often regarded as safe. This is primarily because these files do not come in .exe format, thus reducing the likelihood of virus infection.

Risk

  • It's highly advisable to be careful when downloading games and software from the site unless you have total confidence in the uploader's trustworthiness. Avoid uploaders like IGGGames due to their notorious track record of distributing malware.
  • Opt for reputable uploaders like DODI Repacks, FitGirl Repacks, and KaOsKrew to ensure reliable content and mitigate any potential risks associated with unverified sources.

You are correct that Lemmy is generally left of centre, depending on the instance, so JAQing in defense of billionaire assholes is never gonna go down well.

From the article:

Mr. Wardle’s curiosity was piqued by recent news that Russian spies had used Kaspersky antivirus products to siphon classified documents off the home computer of an N.S.A. developer, and may have played a critical role in broader Russian intelligence gathering.

From the "recent news" article mentioned above:

Government officials, who would speak of the classified details of the case only on condition of anonymity, said that Mr. Pho took the classified documents home to help him rewrite his resume. But he had installed on his home computer antivirus software made by Kaspersky Lab, a top Russian software company, and Russian hackers are believed to have exploited the software to steal the documents, the officials said.

Honestly, I agree, it's a serious accusation against Kaspersky with very scant details and allegations made by off-the-record "officials". Having said that, just because they didn't present any compelling evidence doesn't mean it didn't happen. In the words of Carl Sagan, "Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence." I'm not sure where that leaves us though lol. Honestly, I don't trust Kaspersky with my data any less that with any of the other big antivirus companies. I guess it makes sense they would want antivirus software with CIA/NSA backdoors over alternatives though :p

It also varies by profession and/or position in some countries. Managers and "professionals" on higher salaries will often be paid monthly, whereas "ordinary" employees would usually get paid weekly or bi-weekly. Personally, I think it's a tacit acknowledgement that it's much harder to budget for a whole month on lower rates of pay.

I guess the thought was it'd be much harder for low paid workers to live for 4 weeks on savings, before their first paycheck came in. But yeah, I get your point.

So long as you are getting m0nkrus' software from the links here then you should be ok. There is no 100% guarantee of safety though with any pirated software. All I can say is that many people here have been using m0nkrus' releases literally for years without ever experiencing any viruses or malware.

Bear in mind that it is fairly common practice for software vendors to post claims of viruses in cracked versions of their software, to scare people off from downloading them.

There is a detailed thread about it here. Looking at the "detections" in virustotal, it looks like a false positive to me though.

Also note that m0nkrus is still listed as trusted in the megathread, so there hasn't been any compelling evidence so far to make them untrustworthy. GenP exists as an alternative and they have a wiki about their method here but note that they also still recommend m0nkrus as an alternative method with the following disclaimer, which suggests always installing the individual app versions instead of the so called "Master Collection":

There has been some hacking related complaints towards the Collection version specifically (accounts like google, instagram or facebook), but it's never clear since usually people download from other random sources, got it from youtube, use bunch of other crap, and so on.

At the same time, there are those who use / used individual version or even the collection, and have never had any of those related issues at all.

The amount of data leaks have been increasing, so certain accounts could've already been leaked a while back but just nothing happened until then.

There's a mix of opinions, those who trust and those who don't, since there's never a clear conclusive proof or replication of the same problem it's a gray area.

❗ The links in the reddit and suggestions are to the source, and not other random file hosts.

⚠️ If going with Monkrus, please USE ONLY THE INDIVIDUAL VERSIONS (these should be alright) and NEVER the Collection version (has been dropped due to several correlations with malware, and malfunctions). - This has been said several times, but the majority skips on the reading, so it's your problem going forward.

Edit: I realise OP was asking about AutoDesk and not Adobe apps but the same general advice applies.

Was this community banned on lemmy.world? I was trying to access some bookmarked posts and comments but they weren't there.

It's not really a big problem as far as we are concerned, they can pick and choose whatever communities suit their instance. Hey @FlyingSquid, I haven't reported any misinformation myself, but just pointing out that your community rule 3 says, "Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed."

TBH I've noticed a lot of accommodation for the feelings of tankies in mod decisions here recently. I get that you probably want to be "balanced", but could we maybe just agree that it's a FACT that the Russian invasion of Ukraine was not justified or legal, even if it hurts the feeling of those who like to defend the actions of the war criminal Vladimir Putin?

If you agree that this is indeed a fact, then perhaps you might also consider clamping down on all the tankie posts that amount to nothing more than apologia for authoritarian dictators? If not, I'd love to know your reasoning for allowing them to post their toxic propaganda here.

That number was only for random write performance. And if you have an SSD that supports TCG Opal and eDrive standard (IEEE-1667) for hardware based bitlocker encrytion then there is no negative speed impact.

Quoting Internationalist 360° as a reliable source isn't going to win anyone over. And the 'The Hill' article you listed concludes something that is the opposite of what you are claiming:

The odious Russian media tried to paint Ukraine as a land of Nazis, though that is patently wrong. Ukraine has a thriving Jewish community, and its far-right is still on the fringe.

We all understand your point of view, everyone's a Nazi if they are against Russian/Chinese imperialism.

Interesting factoid from that article is that a crackdown in Japan has seen a two-thirds decrease in piracy over from 2021 to 2023, which is very substantial. They then go on to say that piracy globally went up 6.7% in 2023 compared to 2022, so I guess Japan is an anomaly.

The short answer: if you are particularly concerned about anonymity, then yes, enable it AND use a VPN. But be aware some people may consider this leeching, because anonymous mode may compromise your ability to upload (and download) to some extent. But there are some circumstances in which this is entirely justified.

Public tracker scenario

For most people using public trackers, just a VPN without anonymous mode is fine and recommended, and gives you the maximum speeds in this scenario, while giving you an adequate level of protection from your ISP (if configured correctly). If you do enable anonymous mode, then you'll likely find your upload/download speeds are slower, mainly because DHT & uPnP are typically disabled. And anonymous mode without a VPN is NOT recommended.

WARNING: anonymous mode doesn't provide strong privacy guarantees on its own. If you are concerned about legal authorities and copyright trouble, for example, consider using a VPN instead (or in addition to it).

Private tracker scenario

If you are using private trackers then you would usually not be using a VPN or anonymous mode because many of them explicitly ban such things so they can track your download/upload ratios server-side against your IP address to ensure you are following their policies. While some private trackers allow exceptions to this (e.g., you may be able to get a dedicated VPN IP address whitelisted for your account after signup), many don't.

I'm not claiming to be any great expert on this topic, and so this is just my general-level understanding. If anyone wants to contribute any useful expert info or to correct anything I may have wrong here, please feel free to comment.

Flatworm7591 Mod ,
@Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Okay, that's useful additional info, I figured I was probably a bit out of date on the technical details :p

Flatworm7591 Mod ,
@Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I think it's generally recommended if you are security conscious to manually forward ports rather than allow uPnP to be enabled on your router. There's been cases where IoT devices or apps can open sensitive ports to your network without your knowledge. And the uPnP protocol itself was found to be flawed a few years ago: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2020/06/upnp-flaw-exposes-millions-of-network-devices-to-attacks-over-the-internet/

Çadırcı reported his findings to the Open Connectivity Foundation, which maintains the UPnP protocol, and the foundation has updated the underlying specification to fix the flaw. Users can check with developers and manufacturers to find out if or when a patch will be available. A significant percentage of IoT devices never receive updates from manufacturers, which means the vulnerability will live on for some time to come.

But you know, it depends on your risk profile. For most people, it's probably fine. Depends how paranoid you want to get.

Binding your VPN connection to qbittorrent is a good idea, for sure, if you use a VPN. I usually keep DHT enabled with a bound VPN connection and a manually forwarded port using Proton VPN. I'm going to try out anonymous mode to see if it affects speeds any, since it looks like it doesn't impact uploads or connections any more. That's a bonus :)

I don't like to see fellow pirates fighting each other - save it for the corporate overlords! To clarify this issue, you absolutely can Google search the site the OP mentioned via Google and download links etc. Think of that site kind of like the Russian Facebook/Instagram/YouTube all rolled into one. They do have an app they try to get you to download, and they do want you sign up for an account, but the content is also indexed by Google so you can find stuff without the app and without logging in, using the method described by the OP.

Can we all relax now?
