McDonald’s Gives Up On ‘AI’ After Comedy Of Errors, Including Putting Bacon On Ice Cream ( www.techdirt.com )

LLMs certainly hold potential, but as we’ve seen time and time again in tech over the last fifteen years, the hype and greed of unethical pitchmen has gotten way out ahead of the actual locomotive. A lot of people in “tech” are interested in money, not tech. And they’re increasingly making decisions based on how to drum...

One of my favorite pastries is a maple-bacon long john. It's a long donut with maple icing and a slice of candied bacon on top.

Or do what I did and pay cash for a beat up old truck to do those things with. Mine didn't even have a radio, the heat barely worked, but it hauled hog feed and garbage well enough. And I wasn't paying a grand a month in a car payment and insurance.

I prefer driving smaller cars in heavy snow because they're light enough to sit on top and not get bogged down. Back when I had a commute in my tiny little Scion xA I'd drive by bro-dozers and SUVs stuck in the snow thinking their four-wheel drive would save them from being idiots.

Tesla is recalling its Cybertruck for the fourth time to fix problems with trim pieces that can come loose and front windshield wipers that can fail | The new recalls each affect over 11,000 trucks ( apnews.com )

The company says in the documents that the front windshield wiper motor controller can stop working because it’s getting too much electrical current. A wiper that fails can cut visibility, increasing the risk of a crash. The Austin, Texas, company says it knows of no crashes or injuries caused by the problem....

Never buy the brand new model of anything. Computer, car, dishwasher, blender; they all have teething problems that are solved in later versions. Hell, in enterprise IT it's common to be several major versions back and to pay for security patches rather than keep up with the latest and greatest.

I saw a clip on Just Rolled In where a lady in a Lexus thought she was trapped in her car when the electrics failed, as did the firefighters who broke her window, despite there being manual releases on both the inside and the outside of the car.

There are a few magic spells that can turn 10:30pm into 2:30am quite effectively:

  • "I'll just boost iron production and then go to bed."
  • "Landing on Eve won't take me that long."
  • "Just one more turn..."

My kid's doctor had their prescription service ransomwared. They paid it, and then got ransomwared again by the same folks.

It's been six months now, the prescription system is broken, and they've been using paper prescriptions since then with no idea when things will get fixed.

Or if you just want to inform management that more people won’t simply mean the work gets done much faster just give the example of “If takes 9 months for a woman to make a child, it doesn’t mean you can get 9 women and make a child in one month”

Management: "I don't have time for theoretical discussions. Marketing says this releases in two weeks and you better get it done. Do you need more resources?"

If they're servicing that many users their UX should be better, but it's not. Search should work better, but it doesn't. They should let me make playlists, but they don't.

Yes, scale is hard but it shouldn't be hard to put a clock in the pause screen showing me what time the show will be done. And that's just a tiny way Plex is better.

Options for equalizing temperature between the basement and the rest of the house in summer?

I live in a pretty old house in the midwest, built 1929, bought in '21, single-story, ~1300ish sqft, and with a large, spacious basement. Every time summer comes around I've had issues with the basement getting MUCH colder than the rest of the house (like >10 degrees F difference), presumably due to poorly-insulated floors and...

When I was a kid some family friends had put an air-moving fan in the floor from the basement to the first floor. On hot summer days it would pull the cool air from the basement, and in the winter it would circulate the air from near their woodstove in the basement to the upstairs.

Maybe that would help? Wiring would be the hardest bit to figure out. After that it's just cutting a hole in the floor.

Why not serve fried chicken on Juneteenth? How is it different from serving corned beef on St. Patrick’s day? ( old.lemmy.world )

Disclaimer: I am not trolling, I am an autistic person who doesn’t understand so many social nuances. Also I am from New Hampshire (97% white), so I just don’t have any close African-American friends that I am willing to risk asking such a loaded question.

A traditional corned beef has potassium sulfate (saltpeter) which often had red dye in it, lending the meat a pink color. So it was also about making bad meat look better.

The corned beef isn't necessarily Irish, but putting it in a stew with cabbage and potatoes is the Irish bit

Back in the 90s I had a Zip disk labeled homework with porn on it. My little brother had a similar disk, but he kept it in his underwear drawer and got caught. Then our dad locked down our AOL accounts. I didn't find this fair, so I installed a keylogger, grabbed my dad's password, and unlocked my account.

My parents were not amused when I told them about this 20 years later when I found out my dad was still using the same password for his wifi.

I live in a suburb with a lot of one- and two-car garages, but mine is one of the few houses without cars parked in the driveway or on the street. My neighbors on one side converted their garage into a living space during COVID, and the ones on the other use it for storage of things other than cars.

So even with garages you need space in that garage to store your car, which is yet another hurdle.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,

And the more critical you are, the more on-call you are.

This shows a really low Bus Factor which should be remedied. If you're on call 24/7 because you're the only person who can fix things then your employer is running the risk of you being unavailable due to injury or disease and then they're up shit creek sans paddle.

Pro tip: Defragmenting only works on spinning drives because it puts the data nearer to the spindle so seek times are shorter. Solid-state drives wear out faster if you defragment them, since every write involves a little bit of damage.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Most modern OSeses do defragmentation on the fly and you don't really need to do it anymore.

Which makes me sad because I have so many memories of watching a disk defragmenter do its thing from my childhood.

"IP address are four sets of numbers with dots in between AND THAT'S HOW I LIKES IT!" - Me, an old network guy

Honestly the fact that I can't remember or type IPv6 addresses is a big reason I haven't bothered figuring it out.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod , (edited )

And what happens when DNS inevitably falls over and I need to fix it?

And when I'm watching IP addresses scroll by, IPv6 ones are a lot harder to read than v4
