New PC / Steam Deck for Christmas happened

olafurp , (edited )

Having a good relationship with coworkers is in general great in my opinion and talking about personal life, politics and religion can be avoided with for example:

  • "I'm not that into politics"
  • "sorry, I don't like talking about religion"
  • "Sorry, that's a part I like to keep private"
Also always steer conversations towards work topics and problems.

Then there are ways to differently stop conversations like

  • "Sorry, I'm feeling tired today" < all nurses should relate
  • "Sorry, I'm not in the mood for talking right now"

Then there's the general fact that often you don't really don't have to say anything as long as you listen and ask exploratory questions. I'm autistic and can barely keep a conversation going but this goes pretty well for me without a lot of effort. Just say stuff like:

  • "So you're saying that [literally rephrasing their point]"
  • "So does that mean that..."
  • "That must have been tricky"
  • "That sounds hard/tricky/difficult"
  • "Did you manage?"
  • "So what did you do/end up doing?"
  • "That sucks"

And if they somehow end up being sad and almost crying which happens more often than I'd like to admit you can just say "That sucks" put a hand on their shoulder and wait.

Another option would be to invite them to silence like:

  • "I'm spent, do you want to sit over there, relax and eat in silence?"

People are sometimes uncomfortable with silence but not as much when it's on purpose.

It's just conversation lubricant. If you feel like the conversation is interesting then "Have you thought about doing X?".

I can't stress enough how much people will like you by just actively listening.

But always, be like the British monarchy, never take sides. Instead propose neutral hypotheticals like "Maybe they were having a bad day". I've been in my fair share of gossip but acting as Switzerland manages to just avoid most of it. When people say "Why are you hanging out with X" then responding with "They never did anything to me". If really pressed for opinion then say "I don't know all the details so I can't really give an honest opinion". If they still press you after that you have my condolences since that's toxic.

olafurp ,

They have massive amount of soldiers and are good and making artillery and missiles. It is a big black box however since they haven't been engaged in a conflict recently so all their troops lack experience.

Their economy is practically built for conflict so it shouldn't be taken lightly.

olafurp ,

Yeah, I have a feeling that they will have very low morale because of lack of motivating factors. Desertion might also become a massive problem since this is one of the few ways to get out of the DPRK.

olafurp ,

Kim Jong Un has a pretty cool train also to use the rail

olafurp ,

I think people should need a licence to drive anything that has a tall nose. The chance of fatality is really high for those cars and people need to be taught that.

olafurp ,

I just want to put a small barrier between people and buying a car that's may more dangerous than any reasonably sized alternative. If people want storage space they should buy a station wagon. If they want to transport for work they should buy a Caddy type. If they want to go outdoors offroading then they should get a licence on how to drive offroad and how to prevent front-over accidents etc.

SUVs and bigger cars are becoming the default choice and I think that's a bad thing.

olafurp ,

There's already an idiot tax, a crossover costs 50% more than regular. Price is not an issue for people that buy these but a license, course and having the license easier to revoke for speeding in pedestrian zone might work.

olafurp ,

Fucking hell the size inflation is too real. Toyota Auris and Hyundai i30 are good ones for anybody looking.

olafurp ,

It's starting to impact the used car market where I live. Not as many options as before when half are cross/suv.

olafurp ,

Because most self hosted things are free already. It doesn't apply to FOSS.

olafurp OP ,

That fucking rat

olafurp OP ,

I remember getting a bit lost there too. If I'm not sure where I'm going after 15 minutes of wandering I just look up a guide. I did that 3 times I think which for sá open world without quest markers is an incredible feat.

olafurp ,

Praise be Sol Invictus, the real OG Jesus

Archaeology in good at giving us clues about the living thing. References to people existing is almost purely based on text people wrote. The proof would be someone writing down "Chrestos, popular among the poor was crucified for his crimes for spreading heresy" as a contemporary. But since the earliest reference we have is a century after his death it's not necessarily accurate or true.

olafurp ,

I remember that one miracle closely resembles CPR. He put his hands on a body and brought it back to life.

olafurp ,

Killings usually happen outside the borders

Sorry, meant to reply to a Zionist comment justifying the Genocide. My sincere apologies.

To actually answer the question:

The war with Hezbollah is in my opinion likely. It has popular support among the Israelis and Netenyahu has been doing whatever to stave off an election. It'll still be an enormously costly war which will fill people with regret a couple of months after starting it.

There's another angle where he'll say "If you vote for me I'll get rid of Hezbollah once and for all like I did with Hamas" and then delay until he can say "Circumstances have changed" which I think is a better move.

PLEASE ASSUME EVERYTHING BELOW THIS LINE IS OUT OF CONTEXT AND MEANT AS A RESPONSE TO A GENOCIDAL ZIONIST BECAUSE I'M AN IDIOT

What kind of bubble do you live in? If you take 2 million people, close their airspace, ports and land borders they're not going to be happy.

On top of that Israel does the following:

  • imprison kids for throwing rocks at soldiers wearing armor
  • take people's houses, most recently in Sheikh Jarrah
  • Ban farmers from using water, promise water from other sources and don't deliver.
  • Close West Bank Airport
  • Settle lands in he West Bank.
  • Make Palestinians go to Military court with 99% conviction rate instead of a civil court.
  • Administrative detetention without giving any reason. (Because classified)
  • Withold evidence from courts that's used to convict them. (Because classified)
  • Settlements are both within the 1948 borders and even within the Olso accord Green line.
  • Beat people up and throw tear gas that go play at Al-Aqsa mosque.
  • Don't convict any settlers of violence.
  • Fondle women at check points when they open the trunk of their cars.
  • Limit imports to single item per pallet.
  • Limit work visas.
  • Limit family reunification as a way to immigrate across the border.
  • Random checkpoints that destroy tourism such as in Jericho.
  • Open policy of disproportial response to every reaction the Palestinians have.
  • Raid refugee camps and destroy their roads like in Jenin.
  • Kill journalists that cover the story such as Shireen Abu Akleh
  • Don't even convict the murdered because he was a soldier.
  • Oh and kill/wound 5% of Gaza, half of which are children, for good measure.

When people are suffocating because someone has their foot on their throat they react. Nobody should be surprised that Oct 7 happened. Especially after Israel was warned many times that they would do something if they continue raiding one of the holiest sites in Islam.

Shower thoughts are wasting water.

My city is in the middle of the worst drought in recorded history. My showers are typically under 2 minutes and I have to shower with a bucket to catch otherwise wasted water to use to flush the toilet. I also shut the water down when I am wet enough so I can scrub myself without having unneeded water flowing then start it...

olafurp ,

To absolutely minimise the water usage you could do a more old school "shower" by just putting some water in a bucket with a sponge.

  1. Put some water on your body with a quick sponge rinse.
  2. Apply soap.
  3. Use sponge to rinse off soap.

Then later use the bucket as toilet refill.

I'm going to provide a counter-example to disprove. A slot machine is a video game that is not a puzzle since there is no solution.

I agree with "Most video games are puzzle games" though. There are exceptions like Rail Shooter. Button mash only game. Bullet hell games don't really have a puzzle element since solution is already shown by areas having no bullets in them.

I feel like this statement also hinges on "all video game strategy is a puzzle" people might disagree with.

olafurp ,

According to his interpretation of the genre it would be an action-strategy game which arguably fits tetris better. Your underlying point implies that all strategy games are puzzle games which this guy doesn't agree with I think.

olafurp ,

Beauracracy is one big puzzle of locks and keys where applications are keys and passports are keys to border control locks etc.

olafurp ,

The cookie clicker could still be a puzzle as long as you make it impossible to win without using some power-ups because you'll die sooner of old age. That's assuming there is a win condition in it. Other clickers are genuinely not puzzles since they're infinite and not winnable. Not winnable makes them not solvable so they can't be a puzzle.

olafurp ,

I have a lot of favorites, I'll just leave a short list here.

  • Steins Gate
  • Jojo's
  • Chainsaw Man
  • One punch man

Yeeeah, it's not going to be environmentally friendly, probably the opposite. In the lab grown meat discussions people seem to forget how incredibly efficient cows are at converting biomass to muscle.

For lab grown meat you'd need a circulation system that can reach all parts of the meat and provide it with enough nutrients, proteins, supplements and all that while also removing by-products such as ammonia that result from chemical processes in the cells.

So you'll end up needing a circulation system, immune system, bones for the meat to not get crushed by it's own weight ideally, recycling system like the liver and logistical system to back everything up, and that's assuming the whole process will be energy efficient.

Adding a brain to it makes essentially gives you all parts of a cow except the cow can largely produce the meat without any oversight and will do all the nutrient differential equations automatically.

We're still decades away from being able to scale this up while being within the same order of magnitude in cost. It's far easier to do a decade of chemistry and biology on textured soy meat to perfectly replicate the flavor, texture and nutrient profile of cow meat. This shouldn't come as a shock since plants are more efficient than animals in creating protein.

I'm personally hoping for genetically modified soy beans that have good amount of the amino acid leucine which is lacking in most plant protein.

Sidenote: We are close to fixing the methane emissions of cows by feeding them a supplement mixed with the feed.

olafurp ,

That's true, I shouldn't since I'm not vegan.

olafurp ,

Warhammer TW 3 "Native" mode sucks ass. Running Direct X on Proton is much better.

olafurp ,

Does anyone know what EU political group the 30% party belongs to? Fidesz is unaffiliated but I'm hoping that this 30% voted for S&D or at least Renew.

The result basically ends with Ukraine being top priority but climate is in the backseat. :/

olafurp ,

Here are the results, you need to scroll down to see party-by-party details. They are members of the EPP (standard EU center-right conservative)

I prefer everything to be how you would read it as text. So create_file_dialog it is. Honorable mention is to have it namespaced in a class or something which I think is best. file_dialog.create or dialog.create_file or even dialog.file.create

If you don't use Bing with Edge, Microsoft will tell you your computer needs repairing.

They are not wrong.

To mend your machine:

  1. Ditch Windows
  2. Install Plasma
  3. Your computer is ready.

A laptop running the laters version of Plasma, Plasma 6.

They should add a red badge with ( 1 )

The going rate is 1:30 Israelis to Palestinians in revenge killing. For killing each Hamas militant they're allowed to kill around 20 as collateral damage. 50% in Gaza are children so 10 kids per Hamas militant is okay according to the Israeli government.

olafurp ,

Obra Dinn in amazing and doesn't need any power.

olafurp ,

Only issue for me is that the KWin scripting API doesn't work the way it did so my custom shortcut doesn't work.

olafurp ,

Sure it has a couple of bugs but it has been super solid. I'm on KDE Neon which is the least stable Plasma distro and I barely notice bugs. Once a month Plasma crashes but it does a full recovery with windows in the exact same places.

olafurp ,

I'm fine with a bunch of them staying for the enshittification. Lemmy is growing and that's all that matters

olafurp ,

We've been trending towards less but more active users but it looks like the user numbers stabilised

olafurp OP ,

I don't have that one on. All developer settings are on default, including background processes limit on standard.

AI is a very slow learner still. The base OS for humans is really advanced with hormones biases built in and a initial structure connected to input and outputs.

Sure, it's possible but we're not there yet. It could be still 10-100 years until we manage to get a good one, depending on how we don't know yet.

Google Search is getting even worse for independent sites ( www.theverge.com )

In February, HouseFresh managing editor Gisele Navarro called out publishers like BuzzFeed and Rolling Stone as some of the culprits that publish content about air purifiers despite a lack of expertise — but Google rewards these sites with high rankings all the same. The result is a search results page filled with SEO-first...

olafurp ,

There was a pre-Google search that was really bad. Then Google raised the standard by optimising for good results. The trick was to stay one move ahead of SEO devs. First people spammed keywords, then people spammed backlinks, etc.

The issue is now that it's very outdated and the best thing for websites to do is go spam AI articles about everything. The obvious move would be to move websites with higher specificity to the search query up.

The problem is that Google can do that and optimise for fewest actual clicks on links instead of needing to click 3 to get a result. Instead it's better to click 3 pages with 3 sets of ads then hopefully the "I got what I came for" feeling is in the goldilocks "enough to be interested but not to stop". This means more screentime, which is more ads that mean more money.

This is peak capitalism guuuys
