Is it practically impossible for a newcomer selfhost without using centralised services, and get DDOSed or hacked?

I understand that people enter the world of self hosting for various reasons. I am trying to dip my toes in this ocean to try and get away from privacy-offending centralised services such as Google, Cloudflare, AWS, etc....

Minor correction: some levels had bonus areas where you could save, but you could only do so once. Still a ballache.

That sounds extremely unsustainable

Microsoft Edge nags users with a 3D banner to change Windows 11's default browser ( www.windowslatest.com )

Would you use Edge as your default browser on Windows 11 if Microsoft nags you with a 3D banner? Microsoft thinks you would. In a new experiment, which appears to be rolling out to Edge stable on Windows 11, Microsoft has turned on a banner that uses 3D graphics to promote the browser....

I'd like to add to this by saying that on my Windows 11 work laptop, I have Firefox set as the default. If I open a link from Outlook or Teams, it will open in Edge. So you're not wrong, and it's quite infuriating

openSUSE Tumbleweed vs openSUSE MicroOS

I recently came across openSUSE again and decided to give it a try this time. I am daily driving Fedora 40 right now and before coming across openSUSE I wanted to switch to Fedora Kinoite or uBlue Aurora (i.e., immutable / atomic). That's why MicroOS piqued my interest but I had a hard time find information if MicroOS is...

MicroOS is designed as a server OS first and foremost, but I have read some anecdotes of people using it just fine on the desktop.

You might want to look into OpenSUSE Aeon or Kalpa instead, which are immutable editions designed for the desktop, running GNOME and KDE respectively. Kalpa is in alpha (almost rhymed) but Aeon is in a more mature state.

I would start drinking coffee a lot sooner. I've found that it has a remarkable effect on my cognitive ability (supposedly a common thing amongst ADHDers), and in 2014, I'd have benefitted massively from that.

The trouble I have with Sunshine is that when I play, I wish I was playing SM64

Genuinely couldn't be bothered with Odyssey after a while. That was a game with just too much to do

LunarLoony ,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

It's more about feeling. The platforming feels crisp, the levels feel the right size, the controls feel responsive. No other Mario game has quite matched SM64's mobility, not even my beloved Galaxy games

As a fellow FP5 user, I haven't come across the issues you've mentioned - that said, I did install /e/os pretty much immediately, so perhaps that's why.

My dad got into Kazaa in the mid-00s, then Limewire, before discovering Mininova and TPB. Just kinda saw what he was doing and thought it was interesting. (We were often told not to touch the computer as it'd "knock off his download"...)

I seem to recall one of the first things I pirated was... er, Pirates of the Caribbean, which I watched with my friends huddled round my laptop. Quality times.

My dad had a Raspberry Pi running Kodi, complete with a bunch of Totally Legit plugins which allowed him to watch anything he wanted. Thought it was legal and above board because... wait for it... it's open-source

IT here: you're right about Outlook being junk, but I disagree with your current year argument. What's laughable about having your emails synced locally?

Simutrans is quite interesting, although it's probably closer to a Transport Tycoon than a SimCity. Otherwise I tend to go for SimCity 3000.

For general purpose, I'd say 8bitdo Ultimate C.

I am a huge fan of the GameCube pad and would use it for everything if I could.

For 2D games, particularly fighting games, I'm very fond of the Saturn pad.

However, if I had to pick a best controller ever, it's got to be the SNES pad. No question.

I agree with your statement. However, what I believe the original comment was saying is that if the developers who have lost their jobs were to get together and make a game as they describe, then they would buy it. The malice was directed at Microsoft and so on.

At least, that's how I read it...

is precisely what everyone's been saying this whole time. Nobody's blaming the devs. Your rant is misplaced.

As a sysadmin, that actually sounds pretty useful. If they add a blocklist feature, it might be a good system-wide malware / ad blocking solution.

Wanting to dual boot Windows with Kubuntu. Am I fine getting a Windows 10 key instead of 11?

A couple of months ago, I wiped Windows off my old laptop and installed Kubuntu instead. Now, I was thinking of dual booting Windows additionally for a certain game (definitely not League of Legends, for sure not) and will need to buy a new key. Am I fine getting a copy of Windows 10 despite Microsoft's discontinuation, or...

LunarLoony ,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

You can use Windows 10 indefinitely without using a key. You'll lose out on a few settings, mainly to do with personalisation, and you'll have a watermark on your screen - but if it's just for one game, then perhaps that's something you can live with.

...there are also Certain Methods to permanently activate Windows without a key at all if necessary.

I'm a little confused, why is this news? They're updating their site design?

The replies don't help much, either, unless they're being ironically hyperbolic...
