Lemmy is a failed Reddit alternative

I first joined Lemmy back during the big Reddit exodus of last year. I like many others wanted an alternative to Reddit, and I thought that this might've been the one. I made two accounts, one on lemmy.world and another on sh.itjust.works, in the June of last year that I used on and off for about 4 months....

I disagree.

  • Mbin's terminology (inherited from Kbin) is annoying. Thread vs post vs magazine, boost vs upvote etc are unconventional and annoying.
  • No default sort option. Every time I want to see new posts, I have to manually select "new"
  • User instance and community instance are hidden
  • Difficult to manage/view subscribed magazines
  • Image upload dialogue is confusing

Lemmy has alternative UI such as Voyager and Photon, they are way ahead of Mbin in terms of look and feel.

What do you like about Mbin's UX?

Amazon Mulls $5 to $10 monthly price tag for unprofitable Alexa service, AI revamp ( www.reuters.com )

Amazon (AMZN.O) is planning a major revamp of its decade-old money-losing Alexa service to include a conversational generative AI with two tiers of service and has considered a monthly fee of around $5 to access the superior version, according to people with direct knowledge of the company's plans.

I am quite interested in what Google and Apple will do about their voice assistant devices. The New Siri appears to be quite useful, if it can actually do what we saw in WWDC. But Apple hasn't mentioned anything about the HomePods.

Google Home/Nest has been stuck with the dumb version of Google Assistant, and has been getting worse. It has no integration with any other Google services, and there was no mention of Home/Nest in Google I/O.

If either HomePod or Nest gets released without requiring subscriptions, I might move away from Alexa devices.

cloudless OP ,
@cloudless@lemmy.cafe avatar

The New Siri seems to be quite useful, with "personal context" understanding my calendar, messages, mail etc.

ChatGPT 4 voice mode is very impressive, with the conversation getting clarifications and finding exactly the information I want (when it is not hallucinating). ChatGPT-4o will be amazing if it is as good as what we saw from the demo.

It is not for everyone, but I personally use AI chat every day and find it useful.

cloudless OP ,
@cloudless@lemmy.cafe avatar

Based on what I've read, you can still do what you bought them for without paying the monthly fee. You just have to deal with the old dumb Alexa.

By the way...

Then there will be class action lawsuit from all the owners who paid for the devices.

Is it able to use a LLM?

cloudless OP ,
@cloudless@lemmy.cafe avatar

I am a free user, and it is still chatgpt 4.

And the new voice model doesn't seem to be available yet, even for paid users.

cloudless OP ,
@cloudless@lemmy.cafe avatar

That's voice chat which has been there for a long time.

The 4o voice model is different. 4o can chat much more naturally, and you can interrupt the voice chat in 4o.

Try it, you can't interrupt the chat unless you touch the screen.

You can go back to see the 4o voice chat demo, and you will find out which different it is.

I think restricting yourself to certain website for optimisation isn't necessary.

It is like saying you would avoid driving a city car to the motorway because it is more efficient on city roads.

Following the other post, which lemmy.ml communities don't have alternatives on other instances?

Following the other thread (550 upvotes and 366 comments at the moment: https://lemmy.world/post/16211417), one of the complaints that people had what that some communities only exist on lemmy.ml and don't have alternatives on other instances....

Firefox

!firefox - 16.8k subscribers

!firefox - 3.58k subscribers

!firefox - 1.06k subscribers

I can't quite decide whether to consolidate LW and Fedia for the community. LW has more subscribers, but Fedia is a little more active.

I'm also thinking of asking active users of !firefox to post on LW instead.

Lemmy.ml tankie censorship problem

I feel like we need to talk about Lemmy's massive tankie censorship problem. A lot of popular lemmy communities are hosted on lemmy.ml. It's been well known for a while that the admins/mods of that instance have, let's say, rather extremist and onesided political views. In short, they're what's colloquially referred to as...

@cloudless@lemmy.cafe avatar

For people who want to avoid all content from lemmy.ml, including posts and comments:

I use lemmy.cafe now because it has defederated with lemmy.ml.

As a lemmy.cafe user, I don't see any post/comment from lemmy.ml users at all.

Communities on lemmy.cafe are invisible to lemmy.ml users, so I would recommend creating more communities there.

cloudless ,
@cloudless@lemmy.cafe avatar

I want to use Mbin, but all Mbin instances are federated with tankie instances, including hexbear.

And Mbin doesn't make it easy to see user/community instance.

If you "explore" the fediverse, you are going to see lots of negativity (and tankies).

I end up viewing subscribed communities exclusively.

Rant: vanilla local app search is ridiculously bad

For a search company I can't believe how terrible the Android app search is. I can't even search "bank" for my banking apps, and there doesn't really seem to be any metadata except for the title that goes into the search. Which is absolutely ridiculous given how many companies name their apps something cReAtIvE like "home" or...

cloudless ,
@cloudless@lemmy.cafe avatar

The search is not designed to help you. It is designed to show sponsored apps and other results, so there is a better chance for Google's profit.

In the broader sense, humans are in the Simians group too.

While both monkeys and apes are primates in the suborder Haplorhini and infraorder Simiiformes, they split into two different parvorders:

Catarrhini contains apes (hominoids) and Old World monkeys (cercopithecoids).
Platyrrhini contains New World monkeys

There are lots of similarities between the overcrowding in Hong Kong, and the "mouse utopia" experiment:

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/how-mouse-utopias-1960s-led-grim-predictions-humans-180954423/

Increasingly more people in Hong Kong are having mental issues. Lots of them live in stressful life, partly due to the crazy work culture, but the overcrowding with tiny apartments does not help.

In a few months they are going to launch a brand new Google One Hangouts+. You will be able to transfer calls to AI, so you can watch YouTube Shorts while pretending to be in the call.

For only $99 per month you can enjoy less features than Google Meet which will be killed anyway.
