Is it theoretically possible for Windows 11 to delete pirated content on your PC?

I heard Windows 11 has been updated to take screenshots of your computer. Is it theoretically possible for them to delete content from your PC or external hard drives if they can determine that you have pirated content on them? Can they theoretically report you for it? I know it's unlikely but is it still possible? I'm thinking...

slazer2au ,

While possible, I don't thing MS would it opens too many problems for them.

Something to consider, say you had pirated content on your PC and you were in the middle of a lawsuit related to that pirated content, Microsoft then deletes that content from your PC as part of an automated system action. Did MS commit an act of evidence destruction?

slazer2au ,

Well that's what you get for using new. Switch back to old.

slazer2au ,

Directly no. How would Adguard know the request is for Vaultwerden and suppress the 404?

As others have said, you will need a reverse proxy to make this work. The proxy will listen on port 80/443 and direct the request to the correct application based on path or domain name. Adguard and VW will need to listen on other ports.

Have you ever bough an external hardrive only to take the disk out of it?

Hiya, so am looking to buy more storage and while browsing am seeing some external harddisks, such as Western Digital My Book and Seagate Expansion Desktop for cheaper than the internal harddisks themselves. Have seen this one video from KTZ Systems where he bought up multiple of these external ones just to open them up and use...

slazer2au ,

Yes. Be aware there will be some pin blocking you need to do to make it work right because vendors know this trick.

slazer2au ,

Na, but it is a guaranteed way to having your notifications permission revoked.

slazer2au ,

Bluetooth beacons are a thing. You can effectively track someone through a store to the point where you can recreate their steps all the way down to the product level.

Also, wireless headphones are just another thing to keep charged and are uncomfortable to fall asleep when wearing while the dongle means I can either charge or listen.

I get that removing the port helps with waterproofing and one less hole to clean and yea, it is 100% a personal choice.

slazer2au ,

If you want to start your own Lemmy instance check out the install docs here.
If you want to set up your own community than head to the main page of any instance and poke that Create Community button on the right hand side.

But judging a book by its cover with your username and post history in the 17 hours since your account has been created for you will be better off going with the former method so like minded people have a place to meet that isn't here and can be ignored by defederation.

Now that DuckDuckGo is out. Give me your search prompts and I'll answer them as best I can. That includes images (based on what I have saved on my PC). So what is it you wish to know or see?

Edit: Due to popular demand FatTony Search servers are down for the time being. but has gone open source just in time (Yes that's how it works 😡) . You may now get responses from other users. Servers will be back up some time later.

slazer2au ,

This sounds stupid but what about tdarr?

Stash the file in a staging directory that tdarr watches, have tdarr convert the file to something small like h265. Output the converted file to a folder rsync watches.

slazer2au ,

This may to against self hosting but doesn't MS Word have this capability?

slazer2au ,

As with most things in life. Don't be a dick.

that is why you support them directly, not through a profit driven platform.

    slazer2au ,

I may be slightly smashed so yes, I missed the title.

    slazer2au ,

This is also why testing is important. Speaking of which, when was the last time you tested your backups?

    slazer2au ,

Good on ya kiddo. If you want we can go to the park and play some catch after dinner.

I absolutely love milkshakes. I just wish they loved me more.

Is this what god feels like?

    @showerthoughts

    slazer2au ,

Check the pack it should give you a recommended tablet limit. The ones I get are 1 glass of milk wich makes it fine for 99% of things.

It might be milkshakes bring all the boys to your yard and you need an additional tablet.

    slazer2au ,

That sounds like something else. Never had vomiting caused by lactose intolerance before

    slazer2au ,

You get out of algorithms what you put into them.

My Facebook feed is full of web comics and memes. My twatter feed is full of information security because that is what I follow.

If someone is posting crap you don't like unfollow/unfriend them. Nothing says you have to have them on your feed.

What are things considered romantic, to be avoided in a relationship?

My partner and I just had a talk about it. Basically, she celebrated her birthday today. I was on her party, and it was fun, but I left after around 2 hours to get home and relax a bit. After I arrived, a friend of mine texted me and asked me if I wanted to go to a lake and see the sunset. I agreed, we went to the lake and went...

    slazer2au ,

Would you plan it in secret to suprise your partner. That is how I classify a romantic moment.

    Adnausem

It is built on top of unlock origin and will silently click on the ads in the background to mess with your digital footprint while costing advertisers money who use pay per click.

    slazer2au ,

    only the URL is loaded.

    https://github.com/dhowe/AdNauseam/wiki/FAQ#how-does-adnauseam-click-ads

    How does AdNauseam "click Ads"?
AdNauseam 'clicks' Ads by issuing an HTTP request to the URL to which they lead. In current versions the is done via an XMLHttpRequest (or AJAX request) issued in a background process. This lightweight request signals a 'click' on the server responsible for the Ad, but does so without opening any additional windows or pages on your computer. Further it allows AdNauseam to safely receive and discard the resulting response data, rather than executing it in the browser, thus preventing a range of potential security problems (ransomware, rogue Javascript or Flash code, XSS-attacks, etc.) caused by malfunctioning or malicious Ads. Although it is completely safe, AdNauseam's clicking behaviour can be de-activated in the settings panel.

    slazer2au ,

by the look of it, yes it can.

    slazer2au ,

I think it is when a competitor does it in an attempt to make the advertiser lose money.

Qualified experts of Lemmy, do people believe you when you answer questions in your field?

The internet has made a lot of people armchair experts happy to offer their perspective with a degree of certainty, without doing the work to identify gaps in their knowledge. Often the mark of genuine expertise is knowing the limitations of your knowledge....

    slazer2au ,

Yes. Because if they don't believe me the internet breaks.

What file format do you store your media in?

Hello! I recently listened to a podcast that talked about how storing media files in .av1 format is very efficient and storage-friendly. I've been storing my files in .mkv format, but now I'm considering using Handbrake or a similar service to convert all my video files to .av1 if it's more compressed than .mkv. So;...

    slazer2au ,

In whichever format it came in. If someone has a guide on how to convert from whatever to x264/5 with minimal loss it would be appreciated.

When I try with hand break the quality dips to much to not make the conversion worth it.

    slazer2au ,

Go to your settings and hit that export button, then on your new instance use the import button to sub back to everything

    0900 till 0930 - 15 min standup meeting.
    0930 till 1000 - focus time.
1000 till 1100 - Pre meeting for customer meeting at 1100.
    1100 till 1200 - Customer meeting.
    1230 till 1300 - Post Meeting catchup.
    1300 till 1330 - focus time.
1330 till 1430 - JIRA board update meeting.
    1430 till 1500 - priorities review meeting.
    1500 till 1645 - focus time.
    1645 till 1730 - EOD standup.

    slazer2au ,

Well yea, plenty happens between 1700 and 0900. That is why the 15 min standup takes 30 min.

    slazer2au ,

Don't worry mate, it is a joke. But judging by the other comments it is closer to reality than a joke for some.

    slazer2au ,

Got to hate those meeting where you are marked as optional but you are required to attend.

    slazer2au ,

When you talk to your management and show them how overworked you are and ask for a helper. But don't just say how much, show them in business lingo so they actually understand.

Fill out your calendar with the meetings and show management how you have no time for meaningful work because of meetings.

    slazer2au ,

Dumb question, why can't you attach a USB mouse?

    slazer2au ,

Toss a coin to your server. Oh community of plenty.

    slazer2au ,

I can’t think of one large acquisition that benefited consumers

Because consumers are not thought of when acquisitions happen. Shareholders and maybe regulations are thought of.

    slazer2au ,

Or don't. Because we know PSN accounts are Sonys end goal and Sony can not be trusted with PII.

    slazer2au ,

You seem to have be missing a fundamental thing about tech but I can't pin down what it is. So I will respond to your edits.

but I can't buy a static address that will persist across networks endpoint changes

You can. It's called Provider Independent Space and it a pain to go with as an individual.

Yes, it would be a privacy nightmare, I want to know why it didnt turn out that way

Because people smarter than you, I, and everyone else in this post said 'Yes EUI-64 is a good idea in principe but the problems on a privacy perspective outweigh the advantages. So let's build a system called MAC randomisation so people can get multiple address to access the internet with. '
The good news is you can turn off MAC randomisation.

AFAIK IP addresses (even static public ones) are not equivlent to phone numbers. I don't get a new phone number every time I connect to a new cell tower

In some parts of the world or before 2000 if you changed mobile providers, say from Vodafone to Telstra you had to get a new number. Since that change number routing has become a nightmare and it makes the BGPv4 table look sane in comparison.

Even if a static IP is assigned to a device, my understanding is that connecting the device to a new uncontrolled WiFi, especially a router with a NAT, will make it so that people who try to connect to the static IP will simply fail.

This is a complex one due to NAT in the ipv4 space. NAT exists purely to allow devices to have the same private IPv4 address and hide behind a public v4 address.

No, MAC addresses are not equivalent phone numbers. 1. Phone numbers have one unique owner, MAC addresses can have many owners because they can be changed at any time to any thing on most laptops. 2. A message can't be sent directly to a MAC address in the same way as a phone number

    1. MAC do have unique owner blocks. Cisco somewhat owned the 0000.0C block.
    2. Yes you can. That is literally how it works down the TCP/IP stack.

Yes, IMEI is unique, but my laptop doesn't have one and even if it did its not the same as an eSim or sim card. We can send a message to an activated Sim, we can't send a message to an IMEI or serial number

If your laptop has a regular Sim slot it will have an IMEI. True we can't send messages via IMEI or serial because those systems were never designed for message routing.

    slazer2au ,

Because it will be an ungodly thing to manage. The national phone databases are already a nightmare to manage. it would be far worse if we had a global one.
