Money left to me when one died has made my life tremendously easier. It’s unfair, really, and I had a lot of complicated feelings about it but worked through them in therapy.

some_guy ,

That’s the “what are you gonna do about it” look.

some_guy ,

Why does this feel like it’s a flat-earth slide? I haven’t looked at any flat-earth propaganda, but I strongly suspect that it looks a lot like this.

That said, I’ll stick with my VMs regardless. I like simplicity.

Must be able to speak English

Ah, fuck, I’m out. It’s one of the only languages I haven’t learned. Were this a post seeking Sanskrit, Mayan, Akkadian, or High Valyrian language speakers, I’d be just the right candidate.

Pop quiz: which of the above is not a historical language? If you guessed Klingon, your reading comprehension skills are for shit. The answer is English. It’s completely made up and only appears in Fantasy genre stories – along with birds and flying spaghetti monsters and hobbits.

Wow, I’m really bored at work, I guess. Glad it’s Friday. Hope you all have a nice weekend.

I hate it when one person tries to dominate the tech forum that I peruse. Every time, I think to myself, "you realize this stops being interesting when you reply to every single comment, right?" But I know they don't have that level of self-awareness so I keep it to myself.

some_guy ,

How about taking a position that all murder is wrong rather than justifying one side. Wtf

Why not serve fried chicken on Juneteenth? How is it different from serving corned beef on St. Patrick’s day? ( old.lemmy.world )

Disclaimer: I am not trolling, I am an autistic person who doesn’t understand so many social nuances. Also I am from New Hampshire (97% white), so I just don’t have any close African-American friends that I am willing to risk asking such a loaded question.

The Irish, for example, are no longer systematically persecuted in the USA en masse.

A podcast that I listen to had discount rates when ads hadn’t been filled. I took out an ad talking about how I had no product or service to sell. It was a hilariously funny private joke for me and the guy who approved / read the ad. I doubt anyone else enjoyed it as much, but at the discount rate, it was completely worth it.

some_guy ,

I think maybe I paid $150 at the time. The podcast was Grumpy Old Geeks. I'm not aware of them running any discounts now, but you never know if they'd cut you a break if you reach out. Podcast advertising has apparently been pretty dried up since the pan.

some_guy ,
some_guy ,

Ha, you just made me look it up in my inbox. Here's the ad copy:

Hello Listeners!

This is not an ad. Grumpy Old Geeks are selling ads at a discount, so I bought this slot. I have no product or service to sell.

I hate ads. Don't you hate ads? I just saved you from having to hear or skip an ad! You're welcome!

If you aren't running an ad-blocker in your browser… what's wrong with you?! If you aren't subscribed to GoG to avoid ads via the private feed… that's your call. But I'll never hear this because my stream is ad-free. I never thought I'd pay for marketing, but this seemed like a fun idea. Also, check out the fediverse.

Deliveroo, Fuckers!

Love,
Your pal, another listener.

It ran for $125. It appeared in the episode after 2023-06-27, based on my email correspondence with one of the hosts. So whichever one was next after that.

Had someone verify that wifi was working because he could see his neighbors' networks. Airplane Mode was enabled. Dunno what he thought he saw.

Same thing with a colleague. The guy told him that he was definitely connected to wifi. It took a lot of probing to confirm that wasn't true.

Some people just can't provide valid feedback nor follow simple instructions. I kinda feel like those individuals shouldn't be allowed to use computers to do their jobs. If you can't master just pass the basics, sorry. Here's a pencil and a pad of paper. You can either work the longer way or you can consciously put in the effort to learn this stuff enough for us to help you when you need it.

My own father, who had a doctorate in mechanical engineering: "Now click the Apple menu." "What's that?" "It's the menu that's an Apple logo in the top left corner of the screen." "I don't have that." "Yes, you definitely have that." "No, I don'… oh there it is."

I'm not calling anyone stupid. More that I'm saying people convince themselves that they can't learn and then shut down.

some_guy ,

Insightful. I was commenting about a VIP wrt a power dialog on a mobile device and posited that the reason they didn't understand a thing must be that they don't read before dismissing it. I would even say that's half of 1% of their attention and that makes complete sense. The other 99.5% is focused on the things they consider more important.

some_guy ,

Wow. It's so easy to get that info from a web search that I'd argue that the response is evidence of the person not doing their job. Good on your wife for calling bullshit and the same for the higher ups who defended her position.

some_guy ,

Hopefully they’re really good at bringing money into the company, because their ability to save labor money for the company is abysmal.

I was asked to drive 80m to reboot a device when I'd said the previous day that rebooting would fix it (it was a phone; there's almost no real troubleshooting on the platform). I kept quiet about how financially irresponsible the request was. When I got there, the phone was already turned off for other reasons. At least I got to listen to podcasts while I drove there and back.

some_guy ,

A small handful. Especially those who post content a lot. But not a lot.

However, when reading comments, I only check usernames when I either strongly agree or disagree. Only outliers are identified; idle chat is visually anonymized by my having a very limited field of view.

some_guy ,

That’s why I went backwards from SE back to IT. I enjoy working with people directly and helping them. It’s also a hell of a lot easier in terms of hours and crunches (we have no crunches).

Basically, I had to decide whether I wanted the money and “glamour” of working on a well-known hot project or to be generally happy with my life. I’m a lot happier now.

some_guy ,

I got into a heated argument (preschool) about whether the car jumped or flew. My dumbass neighbors (my age and younger) contended that it flew. Their mother backed them up. I bet they turned out really fucked up with a parent who was willing to lie to them and distort reality rather than hit them with a dose of reality. I was super mad about it. And now look at me: I’m an atheist who believes in Leftwing politics, so I’d say that on the spectrum from reality to fucked, I turned out pretty ok. Hate to think how they must see the world today.

some_guy ,

Rush bragged about how Bush senior carried his bags when he stayed at the White House. He had tremendous political power whether he could command troops (like the PotUS / congress) or not.

some_guy ,

What truly sucks about misaligned incentives in any environment is the impediment to science overall when people chase bad results trying to replicate false results.

some_guy ,

You might also be able to replace the firmware with something like DD-WRT or OpenWRT or Tomato or other third-party firmware.

some_guy ,

By resigning, there’s nothing on his record to prevent getting a job in another department. Hooray! The system works. /s

some_guy ,

I hope this isn't the prelude to a decline. I just ordered my third Pi over the weekend. It should arrive today. I'd hate to see the platform squandered by "make number go up" types.

some_guy ,

I ordered a BananaPi board years ago but then life took me places where I didn't have time or energy to follow up. I've recently rejoined the hobbyist homelab market, so I've quite interested. I'd read that drivers could be an issue with non-Pi boards but haven't ever found out. Which boards / companies are recommendation-worthy at the moment?

Asking twice because two people had similar replies and I'm looking for feedback, not because I want to spam the thread.

some_guy ,

Try following some of the advice in this thread. Hardware tests if the BIOS supports it. Maybe try underclocking or undervolting the CPU is BIOS supports that. If you can pull a RAM chip and test with just one, then test the chips individually in each slot, that'd be something worth trying. I'm shooting from the hip, but these are things that could help isolate a possible hardware issue.

some_guy ,

So damn cute I immediately sent this pic to my partner and ran into the other room to tell her to check her phone.

some_guy ,

I agree that the Oct 7 rape charges are bullshit, but you're misrepresenting the image you posted: it says there was no investigation and that one would be due to draw any conclusions.

some_guy ,

What's truly insane is how you're getting downvoted when Israel's claims have been repeatedly disproven or simply never substantiated.

some_guy ,

I'm sorry, but that just broke the meter on my cuteness radar. I'll be petitioning your insurance for the repair.

some_guy ,

I remember when I was trying to break into the Linux sysadmin role. Every job required 3-5y professional experience. I'd had a homelab for a while and was reasonably experienced with a number of things, but there was absolutely no willingness to bring on a newbie and train them up. It was super frustrating. How will I ever get any experience if you won't hire anyone without years of experience?

some_guy ,

I had an in-person interview lined up after a phone interview went really well. However, I got offered a different position before the Linux interview was scheduled and I had to take it because I was unemployed and couldn't gamble on it not working out.

I just got back into virtualizing Linux instances on Proxmox (had been on ESXi before the Broadcom fuckery). I'm considering going that route again as of just very recently.

some_guy ,

All right, everybody. Millionaire capitalists are in trouble. Let's all tighten our belts and ration even harder. We can't have them lose their private jets, huge McMansions, and fleets of sports cars. It's time to dig deep. Save the 1%!

some_guy ,

Those are some fucked up scary looking sharks.

I can't imagine there's never a scenario where the teacher says "See you Monday," on a Friday. I think this is fiction.

"Lock him up. Lock him up. Lock him…" Oh, wait. That's the wrong team. "Try him for war crimes! Try him for war crimes! Try him for war crimes!"

If you don't use Bing with Edge, Microsoft will tell you your computer needs repairing.

They are not wrong.

To mend your machine:

  1. Ditch Windows
  2. Install Plasma
  3. Your computer is ready.

@kde

A laptop running the laters version of Plasma, Plasma 6.

some_guy ,

The next step will be for Windows to tell you that you are broken if you chose another browser.

some_guy ,

Meh. I'd be less ok with it if massively-wealthy people weren't able to skirt taxes in life. Maybe get rid of it for people under a certain means. But even better, make the wealthy pay their fair share while they're alive.

some_guy ,

Wow, what a huge fuckup. Thanks for the link.
