They figured out that egalitarian secular Democracy wasn't meeting their racist ends, and couldn't ever be forced to through the power of argument, so instead of changing what they want, they're out to destroy the entire construct

TODAY IN ROCK AND ROLL HISTORY - 06/22/1988 ( youtu.be )

English singer Robert Palmer releases the single, "Simply Irresistible", which will peak at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. It would also win a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance at next year's ceremony. In the UK, the record was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Single, even though it had only risen...

Before the internet you would have to go to a library to read a book you didn't want to purchase. Libraries are still a thing. You can still go there to borrow a book, read it, and return it, so that others can read it.

The only difference here is the magnitude of access, where publishers weren't very concerned with at the local library level for token public good, but are very much now alarmed with, in that the internet can distribute content to everyone all the time, content they were very much hoping to continue to monetize.

It's information gatekeeping, but no one is going to tell the publishing industry they might as well fold up shop and stop publishing because they can't make any money at it any longer.

Amazon Mulls $5 to $10 monthly price tag for unprofitable Alexa service, AI revamp ( www.reuters.com )

Amazon (AMZN.O) is planning a major revamp of its decade-old money-losing Alexa service to include a conversational generative AI with two tiers of service and has considered a monthly fee of around $5 to access the superior version, according to people with direct knowledge of the company's plans.

I bought the device (s), I use it to turn on/off my lights, ask it the time and date every now and then, everything it prompts me for is annoying as fuck. I'm not paying a monthly fee for a device that I purchased to do simple tasks that were included when I bought it.

Why not serve fried chicken on Juneteenth? How is it different from serving corned beef on St. Patrick’s day? ( old.lemmy.world )

Disclaimer: I am not trolling, I am an autistic person who doesn’t understand so many social nuances. Also I am from New Hampshire (97% white), so I just don’t have any close African-American friends that I am willing to risk asking such a loaded question.

seeing as how ethnicity and geographic origin of the american slaves were purposefully destroyed and lost, to cut them off from their history by design, their created culture will need to suffice

downpunxx ,
@downpunxx@fedia.io avatar

well, no, the reason is commercial, chicken is one of the cheapest and easiest proteins to raise in the smallest amount of space, which works out better for those of lesser means. everybody loves fried chicken, sure, but it's not the reason it's always been a stereotypical hallmark of the American Black population

I got my S10 in my pocket, works perfectly, removable expandable 500 GB storage, headphone jack (that's a fact), and has saved me thousands in buying a new phone, and that number just keeps going up every year

I see all these paltry nonsense "improvements" hahahahaha. Lipstick on a pig that's pretty enough already.

If Japan wasn't so inherently racist to foreigners, it would be a target rich environment for people looking to invest in the culture, the country and starting a family

downpunxx ,
@downpunxx@fedia.io avatar

well, sure they can, in a snap of a finger, give 18 to 30 year old married Japanese free houses, free advanced education, and free childcare, this would get fixed in a matter of 20 years

How many people actually want fully on-site IT jobs?

I've been looking for a new job as a software developer. The huge majority of job listings I see in my area are hybrid or remote. I just had an introductory phone call with Vizio (which didn't specify the location type in the job listing). The recruiter told me that the job was fully on-site, which I told her was a deal breaker...

There's a lot of "play" in tasks accomplished when working in an office, not so much when companies have spy software gauging every minute one spend on their corporate owned pc's remotely, some find even less freedom when under that type of 9 hr scrutiny day in day out
