I'm probably an outlier, but I don't understand the reason of an e-ink device if you put android on it, add colors, add touchscreen and constant connection. Why not just go with amoled if you want all of that? Probably it's even cheaper.

E-ink is a specific technology that has it's advantages in powersaving and reduced eye strain, it was never a replacement for our pocket led flashlights we call smartphones. All beauty of it is it can take one physical form and stay in it infinitely before something refreshes it.

It excels at some tasks, and on a custom OS made with it's quirks in mind can serve as a book or some indicator that would consume that little in years it can as well be a rounding error. Books, digital price tags, the tablets from Star Trek, variable road signs, billboards? If it stays the same before you boot in and change it, that sure has it's uses.

But no, they want to add complexity to it's design, add additional battery drain, up the price, to compete with a tech that plays another sport. It's stupid. Like cracking up nuts with a microscope.

What I personally want is that additional R&D make it cheaper to produce b\w screens, make them sturdy and affordable up to the point we'd give them out in the classrooms for free instead of paperbacks, and for it to become the default device to read long-form un-interactive content, and to use them in devices that don't refresh too often like some house and car indicators.

The eye strain thing is a myth.

I mean, reflected light is less harmful. We aren't looking directly at the sun for it leaves ghost shapes even after we turn our head, but it's lights' reflections is what makes or eyes see. Basic e-Inks don't emit light, some backlit it from the side, or from the back, but they are still more safe than displays that do work by emmiting light of some color directly to you, and there was a race to reach the wider angle they can do it too, for older devices had colors nearly inverted if seen from the sharp angle.

An unfriendly reminder why they are separate.

Fallout Series (Why don’t I like it?)

I think my first Bethesda game was Skyrim and I love Skyrim. I’ve played through Skyrim when it first came out I played through it again in the DLC came out. I played through it again on the switch I have since played through it again on PC. I love Skyrim. I played it so many times and I know it’s a meme to keep re-releasing...

@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

This also ties back to the survival aspects I mentioned earlier, because I also felt like equipment was much more important in Fallout...

Pretty much agreed with everything and this paragraph is probably why I am picking Fallout and (partially) TES3 for I like the opposite than you and OP, and both sides are valid. My journey is of sharp spikes of interests when I find a new shiny thing or mechanic, even if it's not my speciality, rather than a smooth gradual progression that puts an accent on a character you nurture. On that distinction, it sound like playing the mechanical part of an RPG like an arcade\action game.

Also grocery bags. I pay for them, don't want you logo on it

One alcohol bewerage chain in Russia popularized the blank black bag format in recent years, in theory - to make it less obvious you've bought booze. They are sturdy, have good handles, so overall it's a win. But since they are the most popular source of them, a blank black bag therefore automatically means booze.

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

Right. There were probably battles around that but not giving up any 'nazi gold' is a long-standing rule that makes even the worst states keep their money here. Freezing the assets and letting the interest go is bigger than it seems.

andrew_bidlaw ,

Удобно пиздец. And someone's probably buying these properties, right? I have troubles imagining the mindset influencing such a purchase even outside of ethics, but the fact that reselling&rebuilding businesses are the most lucrative things there and these spheres have been already divided between the right people are beyond any reasonable doubt. The war is just a war, but profits should come at the right time. 3\5 stars, the smell of a previous owner is still present.

Most of bad rep is generated by insufferable hype train enthusiasts we started to call cryptobros and big tech CEOs trying to capitalize on putting this edgy technology everywhere, just like with LLMs right now. Many people who escape shit states in recent years legitly use cryptocurrencies to bring their unconvertable money abroad and that's more reliable than a suitcase of precious metal bars, lol. This tech is no Jesus or Devil, it just needs to mature and overcome the initial fascination, with most bad realizations and schemes dying off. In ten years this discourse would be very different.

I don't want a dumb phone, I want a reliable PDA that doesn't hallucinate it's smarter than me. Older android on a current hardware could've been the best but it's not supported anymore by major devs. As a consumer, I don't understand why that's the case. I'm not interested in their new design choice or whatever they market it with while bloating the shit out of it, I want a low-powered portable PC to edit docs and browsing the web without eating through 8gb and 6000mah like it's nothing.

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

And make them with a high-rez multi-touch screen for old screens sucked ass at typing.

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

It's true, but it's no longer a reality. Keyboards now can only happen in dumb phones or some luxury concept phones. It's against a couple of current paradigms: making phones easily replaceable, incentivizing quick and short-term usage, having full control over UI\UX, maximizing interactive screen's real estate, making sure you always look at the screen, and, besides that, engineering challenges that are kinda hard by themselves, but moreso they are in a conflict with banning replaceable batteries, holes for headphones and so on. We are out of luck.

Nevertheless, I'd probably do any stupid thing to get the modern version of something akin to that beast.

On Windows, I could've probably bought it too for having startup+plugins+programs+cache in one window, since in later versions of Windows it's too inconvinient.

Congratulations. My experience is pretty close to yours. Besides some software and shortcuts I miss from windows, it just works, and in these little moments I need help, there probably a dozen of threads with suggested solutions.

Be aware of Time Shift though. A part of new users report it taking all free space on the drive and crippling system, if used on ext3-4 file system + saving back ups to the system drive + having things like flatpack or TS's own folders not excluded. It happened to me and a lot of others, as I've encountered this question multiple times on the web, so keep an eye on it. You can actually open any save point as a folder from TS's interface and see if it saves what it shouldn't.

They should've acted like the Cold War never ended because the other side uses the same old playbook, ruled by the people coming from the executive branch: spies, cops, state security, who just can't think differently, and even in early two thousands acted like that, but not with the confidence they've got since that. Europe can't just throw Ukraine under the carpet like they are talking with a rational entity to save relations or whatever. If they wouldn't learn from that, wouldn't act on that, that'd define the survival of these alliances, because no one would ever feel secure in them.

Instances can enable or disable the email verification and other measures, like asking why you want to join that instance.

I don't recall reddit being so liberal. I haven't used an account I didn't verified in the same day, so I can't say if it works, but I suspect they can enable different protocols for inspecting unverified accs.

As a side-note to that discussion: my VPN works with most services i can't access otherwise while reddit blocked me as I tried to access it to see for myself. I'm surprised.

I'm still having troubles to understand why'd they even want Windows 11 to happen and I'd really like some more informed people to help me out.

They had massive mergers as an unpredicted expense. I also don't know many people who bought the last XBOX unlike previous gens or ever used MS Store. Is that sweet lobbying money from hardware producers? I thought they planned Windows X as the peak Windows platform to then sell internal products (game-as-a-service but OS), so did this plan failed?

Windows 11 looks like an afterthought and the centered taskbar may be intentionally put there to make it look different from Win10 while it's probably the least changed new release as I learnt after a brief encounter with it (after XP, I don't know much about earlier OSes).

Had they just run out of money?

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

I'd probably say a blasphemy, but ordinary workers only experience problems for their old HDDs\systems are overstuffed and are far from their prime, so they ask for entire new PC to start fresh. New Seven x64 on SSD is what most people would'be okay with*, since it's compatible with new Office document formats, doesn't need much resources or space, and can still do everything except for niche tasks. It's not as morbid as Vista\8, not yet filled with bloat like 10 or 11, not as limited today as XPx32 with older driver delivery model. I don't know much about security stuff, but I feel like older systems falling from popularity are not the usual targets of people who write them, and encountering one using an outdated OS would probably mean nothing since exploits they want to abuse aren't there yet.

* Linux would probably be better, but that's still a hard sell for businesses that don't use it intentionally.

andrew_bidlaw ,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

Probably, if they aren't that obscure. I don't know if a distance is that long between Windows 11 and Seven, but I suppose it's that big for older systems.

Please, don't even touch this. With our RKN and useless pinnocchios banning random things extrajudiciously, I'd be surprised if we'd have any access to the internet in 2026. For those without a government issued pass and active service in bot farms, I mean. If I'd get limited to local resources, I feel like I'd give up on internet altogether. Can't discuss shit there without pseudo-trad weirdos chiming in.

It may be a major plus for the Internet as a whole if the cable is cut completely, but I feel like it'd only be cut for dissenting folks, while carriers of the official talking points wouldn't ever get limited.

the end goal is basically overthrowing the government and installing a Dunmer ethno state... And the Emperor is fine with it lol.

Red Year is coming in 3... 2... 1...

I'd disagree with you saying you are building the ethnostate since your end goal is to kill the one who tried to do that, and also to use Akhulakhan (big godly mecha) to undo the Empire, like it's some Metal Gear Solid game lol. You kill the most dissenting party here, and whatever your choices were before, you still build this province as a more tolerant place than Dagoth Ur envisioned. Even Redoran's ultraconservative pov is vanilla compared to what could've happened if he won. So it's a win for Empire even if they didn't know that wouldn't last.
