But the Russian soldiers in Ukraine? Bunch of low-IQ psychopaths. Violent prisoners, people who thought war was a good idea, and generally a group of assholes who think it's fine to visit your neighbor's country and start killing people.

I've had enough bad faith interactions with lemmy.ml accounts that it's become helpful to expect it from them.

Sure there are some actual people over there who are willing to engage in a fair way, but its not worth rolling the dice.

I have Lemmy.ml blocked and I still see them in other communities all the time. Defederation is the best solution for dealing with an instance that's designed to spread propaganda.

This is nothing like that.

WWII was Russians fighting for survival with the support of the rest of the USSR at a time when their population was growing and Stalin had an iron grip on power.

Russia today is shrinking, even before the war, which is a relatively unpopular war of primal conquest instead of self-defense. Back then the Kremlin has international support, including a ton of equipment from the US, and the Soviet dream of a better world. Today's Kremlin is isolated, quickly burning through USSR leftovers, and scared to start another mobilization because the last was deeply unpopular.

It's strange though, it's major international news and I saw two posts about it on Lemmy in over an hour of scrolling.

Pretty much. This doesn't limit the angle since the Kremlin can still launch from a bomber over the Black Sea, but it means they have 6 fewer missiles in an attack. So, air defence will have an easier time taking them out.

I have no blood lust, but I'm glad to see them die so they can't keep killing Ukrainians. They came to someone else's home and started killing and torturing people.

I'd prefer to see them turn around and go back to Russia, and I recognize that many are brainwashed and come from difficult circumstances, but as long as they're in Ukraine it's best if they get taken out as soon as possible.

This seems to be the sad realpolitik truth. It explains how some of the aid has been given.

Enough to keep grinding down the Kremlin's war machine, not enough to actually take the Kremlin out of the fight.

In a more utilitarian analysis, this might be the best for the greatest number of people. From an empathetic human perspective... it's pretty fucking dark to see young Ukrainian men dying for this. Still better than living under the Kremlin's boot.

Israel wouldn't "accidentally" hit a US aid convoy, they know that would jeopardize military aid. The current gov might be genocidal assholes but they're not that stupid.

Hamas wouldn't just blindly kill Americans, they're also not blindly stupid and they know they'd quickly lose support from younger Americans. Plus that would piss off the Kremlin and they'd get an earful from Iran.

No doubt that many in Hamas want to undermine US military support for Israel, and young Americans protesting is one of the most likely ways that could happen. Their leaders are working with the Iranian government, which is coordinates with the Kremlin.
