Year, year and half, sometimes 2. Just depends on the pieces that are involved and how long it’ll take to get them all to line up. Family/friends are invited on some vacations, sometimes it’s just us and we have to book it out as far as possible due to demand. We rarely do anything spontaneous. Wife is a major planner.

Currently we have:
July 4th weekend at a campground with church friends
September 2024 in state at a mountain cabin for wife’s bday.
March 2025 in planning for an Alaskan vacation to visit family and see the Iditarod
September 2025 in planning for a family beach vacation.

Even Apple finally admits that 8GB RAM isn't enough ( www.xda-developers.com )

There were a number of exciting announcements from Apple at WWDC 2024, from macOS Sequoia to Apple Intelligence. However, a subtle addition to Xcode 16 — the development environment for Apple platforms, like iOS and macOS — is a feature called Predictive Code Completion. Unfortunately, if you bought into Apple's claim that...

Microsoft Account to local account conversion guide erased from official Windows 11 guide — instructions redacted earlier this week ( www.tomshardware.com )

Microsoft has been pushing hard for its users to sign into Windows with a Microsoft Account. The newest Windows 11 installer removed the easy bypass to the requirement that you make an account or login with your existing account. If you didn't install Windows 11 without a Microsoft Account and now want to stop sending the...

Capitalism is the reason. They’re already at peak market share. Since they’re a publicly traded company, they have to do something to continue growing. Ads is probably the easiest, most obvious, but ultimately damaging idea. CEO doesn’t care since he probably has a fat golden parachute if ousted. The entire thing is rigged against shareholders and users.

QuarterSwede ,

Yes. That’s the spirit of what I meant.

Branch manager at a 3 trade business (HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical). Very much enjoy beating the competition and taking all of their great talent because they can’t treat them well. It’s not hard to actually give a damn about your people. Turns out, if you do that they like working for you and end up performing even more.

The state is responsible for the education of children. This absolutely falls within their scope.

QuarterSwede ,

I didn’t even know what it was till yesterday. Not sure it’s the bastion of the public.

Turning off push notifications is a large step. I did that for personal profile stuff and I’m down to 0 usage on FB, limited on Instagram (boss sends me stuff once in a while), some on Lemmy and Mastodon. Work profile has push notifications but is limited to certain hours only. Helps a ton.

What song should I play for my bathroom neighbors?

The work bathroom is currently a warzone, on their phone speakers people like to play music, play games at full blast, and one guy likes to chill to ambient rainforest. What song can I play to passive aggressively make it known that I don't want to listen to their tik tok feeds while I work out my demons?

QuarterSwede ,

My work requires video if possible and not distracting. I’m so used to it note I don’t really care what you’re doing. Bathroom would be a hard no though.

Starting January 18, 1943—the midst of World War II—sliced bread was barred from American bakeries and homes. New baking regulations set by the Office of Price Administration had boosted flour prices, and the government wanted to prevent these costs from getting passed down to the consumer. By banning the use of expensive bread-slicing machines, the government was hoping bakeries could keep their prices low. Officials were also worried about the country's supply of wax paper—and sliced bread required twice as much paraffin wrapping as an unsliced loaf. (It prevented the slices from drying prematurely.)

QuarterSwede ,

This. Read an article a while back about American farmers getting sued because there was GM crop growing in their fields when they didn’t plant it. It had cross pollinated from neighboring farms. Being able to sue over patented GM crops is just a bad idea.

Just to expand, here’s a list of typical 240V appliances in a typical American home:

  • Furnace/Heat Pump
  • Air Conditioning
  • Electric Range/Stove
  • Electric clothes Dryer

And some homes have:

  • Hot Tub/Spa

Don’t conflate 120V/15A standard outlets with not having 240V at all. All homes have 240V or high power appliances wouldn’t function.

Got debt down from $18K to 6K in 8 months. Would be 1K if Colorado would ever approve our electric car rebate for 5K. Slow bastards.

QuarterSwede ,

That’s not true though. Large companies get commission breaks like Netflix at 15%.

It’s been in news articles here and there.

18+ How do things get stuck in the anus?

I have seen a lot of stories online of people getting things stuck in there and doctors having to remove it, even items like cucumbers. I get that an item with a highly irregular shape could get stuck. But if it's something long and rounded, why can people not just poop it out? Is it because the item isn't soft enough?

where it sits until you and it come to an understanding.

Great writing.

And that’s the biggest issue so far with “AI.” It’s about as intelligent as a newborn.

QuarterSwede ,

Ohhh I like that one.

Not sure why this was posted here. It’s not surprising an elderly lady had that opinion.

Netflix Windows app is set to remove its downloads feature, while introducing ads ( www.techradar.com )

Netflix has managed to annoy a good number of its users with an announcement about an upcoming update to its Windows 11 (and Windows 10) app: support for adverts and live events will be added, but the ability to download content is being taken away....

This is part of why I like Apple TV+ so much. I watched two episodes of Slow Horses in 1080p HDR on my iPhone while in an airplane. It was fantastic.

At the end of the day, Xi Jinping has blundered his way into a strategic cul-de-sac.

Well said.

4ish years ago when I bought a house I was convinced not to get a house inspection, would it be crazy to get one now just to make sure it's all good?

Was 25 and super nervous, so when the realtor was like "oh yeah they just check for basic stuff, but I looked around and it looks great" I was like "Oh okay, this is so astronomically expensive every penny saved is good..."...

QuarterSwede ,

And don’t be surprised at the prices on actual fixes not just shitty band-aids. They’re crazy expensive.

Ex. My home builder didn’t put a sump pump in our new build (and honestly, they should’ve forced us to have a few) and we didn’t know this would be an issue. In the monsoon season we got flooding, yay. A permanent fix with a lifetime warranty of 3 sumps was $25K. If we had put it in during building it would’ve been a few thousand. Peace of mind is typically gonna cost you.

If you have a basement I’d recommend they check the foundation. Have a plumber check your system (PRV, expansion tank, water heater, valves, toilets, drain lines). If it’s an older house have them check the electrical panel and wiring. They don’t last forever and can cause fires. How is the roof doing? HVAC system? Etc. Find an inspector that can do a thorough inspection because they’re are some lazy ones out there or people who just don’t know what to really look for. Ideally you contact each trade to give you an in depth diagnosis.

Wonder how it’s dealing with all my edits?

QuarterSwede ,

Honestly Apple Maps is better in my area by a decent margin. It’s up to date sooner and that matters in a rapidly growing city. Google still beats it in search but even then AM finds things it doesn’t at times. i just wish they’d move on from shitty Yelp. I vastly prefer AMs navigation over GM as well.

I don’t remember my dreams most nights. I also have a terrible memory so it doesn’t surprise me. I go to sleep blissfully and wake up realizing time has past but not remembering anything I dreamt. Sounds awful but I don’t typically like the dreams I do have (usually brought on by me being too hot while asleep).

QuarterSwede ,

Great game. Wish I had time to still play it, or the like.

QuarterSwede ,

Came for the TLDR, stayed for the entire read. Excellent review.

QuarterSwede ,

It’s too late. We’ve already hit the tipping point. Many of my neighbors have EVs now. They’re everywhere in my city and I’m not in a major city. They’re just plain better cars and now people know it. It’s too late.

QuarterSwede ,

The issue is the mentality of lack of growth = death and low shareholder returns. When you get as big as these giants this is a valid concern and not an easy problem to solve. You have to be highly creative and find new ways to bring revenue in. Search is stuck in a large rut and is why they’re looking at AI to help spur more growth.

QuarterSwede ,

For real. My work laptop locks after 5 minutes.

QuarterSwede ,

We use Windows Hello PINs. Great when you have a 10-key (numpad) built into the laptop. Too bad it takes forever to wake. God I wish I had any MacBook.

Do you clean the opening on your glass bottles?

Spouse and I have a discussion on what to do after you pour a sauce out of a glass bottle. I do nothing but my wife takes her finger and wipes the excess from the bottle before she puts the lid back on. I think touching the food is disgusting and she thinks leaving it there to gum up the lid is disgusting. What do people do?

QuarterSwede ,

You have an immune system for a reason. Hyper cleaning is worse for you as it weakens your immune system.

QuarterSwede ,

It fell more than Q1 2022. They’re comparing the same Quarter.

I’m sure it’s just uninstalling the browser chrome. The backend is woven into too many MS products to be completely removed.
