Nothing as a kid. Now I listen to a detuned playlist of fascinating, but dry science/history/tech videos.

My current rotation is Anton Petrov, Sean Wilsey, Red Wrench Films, and Curious Droid, all played at 85% speed, 95% pitch.

Edit 95 pitch, not 90.

OhmsLawn ,

I slowed it down because it's more sedate sounding. Even though these videos have relatively even tonal qualities, they sometimes speak fairly quickly. I adjusted the pitch only enough to reduce the distortion from the speed shift I just checked and the numbers are actually 85/95, not 85/90. 90% pitch is too unnatural sounding.

I love Timeline when I'm traveling. It's great to be able to remember all of the random wandering in foreign cities. I've seriously considered printing and framing the timelines, but it's difficult to crop them so they all match.

At home, I'm far less comfortable with it.

OhmsLawn ,

A lot of the law related words are from French derivations AFAIK?

Yeah, those legal terms have been more-or-less common to any romance language I've used.

OhmsLawn ,

I'd like for it to be easier to open YouTube links in my browser.

Every time I select something interesting, it opens my app. Maybe this is just a setting I'm missing. Not sure.

Maybe just a "copy link" button?

OhmsLawn ,

Oh right-fucking-on!

Works perfectly.

Thank you!!!

OhmsLawn ,

They're talking about assisted living facilities, for anyone lost in the pond.

OhmsLawn ,

An alternative would be to replace the movement.

Could be easier than fussing with the contacts.

OhmsLawn ,

It isn't broken. It's quirky, and they all are.

What I appreciate about Spanish over English is the ease of spelling and pronouncing new words. What I appreciate about English over Spanish is the ease of creating new words.

I have some limited ability/understanding in other languages, but not enough to judge. Except for French.

OhmsLawn ,

Truly unbelievable language. I love it. So easy to start, then you hit that wall of 25-letter words.

OhmsLawn ,

In addition to weight, there's cost. They would have to be integrated into the design, not just normal, flat solar panels, so there's a significant cost increase. It's no problem on a delivery van, but anything curvy is probably prohibitively expensive to develop and produce.

OhmsLawn ,

I have the yellow box, fully assembled, sitting on my shelf, staring at me. I've had it for a month. I still have four smart things hubs running everything. I'm a little worried my system won't reach without all the back hauling those are doing.

Took time off this week. Might try to at least get the software installed.

OhmsLawn ,

I was recently reminded of the figurative usage of poleaxed. That's my current favorite.

OhmsLawn ,

Fracas is a good one.

Last time I remember hearing that was when Top Gear imploded.

OhmsLawn ,

It was big news about a decade ago when gravitational waves were first detected by LIGO

A decade ago. That kills me. I still think of this as a recent event. Let's not talk about how long we've known about dark energy...

OhmsLawn ,

It's small enough that just browsing all will actually show you all.

OhmsLawn ,

My intended point is that browsing all is a viable way to find communities. You won't miss many communities if you browse everything. Then subscribe to what you like, block what you really dislike.

You're right that all can be overwhelming and distasteful, but at least it really is everything, as opposed to the r/all, which was heavily filtered.

OhmsLawn ,

Ah yes.

I suppose if your instance isn't federated with everyone, that would be an issue.

Apple bananas are freaking amazing. I'm always so happy when we score some at the Asian grocery. That little pop of acidity makes all the difference.

OhmsLawn ,

Those are very late season fruit. I wasn't aware they weren't available up north. Look for them starting in October, I think.

OhmsLawn ,

Yeah, they probably got the money, along with one hell of an eye roll.

OhmsLawn ,

It's in San Francisco.

I've seen it, but hadn't realized that it was open to visitors.

OhmsLawn ,

Same. I'll even eat them stuffed with onions. The only ones I've run into that I didn't like must've been improperly prepared (very, very bitter).

OhmsLawn ,

Yes, every night AFAIK, but I sleep very deeply and seldom remember them beyond a matter of seconds. If I've had caffeine late, I do tend to remember them more.

How do you store your grounded coffee? ( slrpnk.net )

Hiya, just quickly wondering how people store their coffee? Mine is in a tin box I got second hand, cos I thought it looked nice. Any rules regarding storing grounded coffee? I don't store much at the time, it's just if I grind a little too much and what not. I'm assuming the general thumb rule for this is to store it in a...

Beans go in mason jars once I open a 1 Kg bag. Once it's ground, I'm drinking it.

English natively, enough Spanish to make friends, enough French to stay out of trouble, and enough Italian to get into trouble. I also have some transactional German (groceries, tickets, coffee, etc). I'm American.

It would take me a few months of daily practice to prepare and get comfortable with anything but Spanish. I haven't studied the other languages formally, only independently, for travel.

Pretty snappy. I've been frustrated with my current app, wunderground. A million years ago, they were great.

Do you clean the opening on your glass bottles?

Spouse and I have a discussion on what to do after you pour a sauce out of a glass bottle. I do nothing but my wife takes her finger and wipes the excess from the bottle before she puts the lid back on. I think touching the food is disgusting and she thinks leaving it there to gum up the lid is disgusting. What do people do?

OhmsLawn ,

Yeah, in this case, both parties ate being a little gross.

OhmsLawn ,

Fat fingers. Also, for some reason, Android shrunk my keyboard, and I hadn't realized it. I just figured out how to put it back to normal.

I'll leave the typo. Wouldn't want to sabotage your comment lol.

OhmsLawn ,

I'm not a contractor.

I'd poke around for rot and mark the edges to make sure it isn't spreading. Maybe try to get up there and check after a storm.

It could absolutely be an old problem that stained the wood. I might make a 1-year calendar reminder if I didn't see anything after a rain.

OhmsLawn ,

That's a persistent itch.

Here are two channels I think Tom's viewers would appreciate.

Alexis Dahl makes interesting videos on history, science and life in Michigan.

The Tim Traveller makes ridiculous, yet strangely informative videos about locations all over Europe.

Both channels consistently provide answers to questions I hadn't thought to ask. Both do it with a genuine sense of wonder and a lot of heart.

OhmsLawn , (edited )

I was going to edit my other response but I'll just make a new one so OP sees it.

Calum Raasay , out of Scotland, makes some outstanding historo-scientific videos. He travels around quite a bit too.

Another that I haven't seen mentioned is Our Own Devices , he actually used to write for Simon Whistler. Most of his videos are shot in-studio, like Technology Connections and Joe Scott, but he also ventures out into the field for special projects. It's a similar mix to what you'd see on Forgotten Weapons.

OhmsLawn ,

That's what it said in the title, a quarter century ago.

Google apologizes for ‘missing the mark’ after Gemini generated racially diverse Nazis ( www.theverge.com )

Google apologizes for ‘missing the mark’ after Gemini generated racially diverse Nazis::Google says it’s aware of historically inaccurate results for its Gemini AI image generator, following criticism that it depicted historically white groups as people of color.

OhmsLawn ,

It's really a failure of one-size-fits-all AI. There are plenty of non-diverse models out there, but Google has to find a single solution that always returns diverse college students, but never diverse Nazis.

If I were to use A1111 to make brown Nazis, it would be my own fault. If I use Google, it's rightfully theirs.
