That’s an AI generated article if I’ve ever read one.

Biden Puts Arms Shipment to Israel on Hold Amid Dispute Over Rafah Attack ( www.nytimes.com )

President Biden paused an arms shipment to Israel last week to prevent the U.S.-made weapons from being used in a long-threatened assault on the city Rafah, administration officials said on Tuesday night, a sign of the growing rift between Washington and Jerusalem over the conduct of the war....

Remember, this isn’t just an intern thing. It’s going to impact anyone hired to work for a team or department that no longer exists.

Getting an internship at a notable company is hard to do, and getting dropped at the last minute is fucking terrible, and can delay you entrance into the workforce. Which already takes way too fucking long and puts recent grads in even more debt.

That said, this article is also leaving out the other employees that suffered the same fate. I’ve known people who have left homes and pulled their kids out of school, all for a job that vanished when they arrived.

Ghostalmedia ,

Or at the very least, unemployment insurance that isn’t pocket change.

Making variants of things is expensive. You have to keep more inventory on hand for the manufacturing components and the final manufactured vehicles. You also have to spend time / energy / space in the plant for variants of things.

And for final point of sale, if you don’t have enough final inventory in one area, you’re forced to spend a shitload of money shipping inventory across country to fill gaps.

It’s a pretty common problem in product development. This is why Henry Ford was so revolutionary. Variation of components increases a ton of manufacturing and logistics costs.

That said, Telsa should’ve just sold the car at one fair price and not software locked this. This was shady AF.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Tech folks lost their shit. Joe Schmoe consumer arguably didn’t notice. They were just looking at the manufacturer sticker on their palm rest.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Good news is that now people have decent options for non-Tesla EVs.

Now we just need to make sure those cars have access to widespread and reliable charging. NACS is a good start, but NACS cars will only have access to less than a third of Telsa’s network.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

And don’t forget about the local lots where you’re keeping the manufactured cars. If you’ve ever purchased a new car, you know how annoying it is to get car with the color, engine, drivetrain, and cabin options you want.

If there are lots of variations of a vehicle platform, then dealers and stores will use often their space to stock a little of everything, or maybe a lot of the popular config and next to none of some other configs.

Less variation means dealers and stores are not shipping inventory around as much, and they have more stuff on hand for impulse purchases.

Later that afternoon, the company published the following statement:

We sincerely thank Jack for his help funding and initiating the bluesky project. Today, Bluesky is thriving as an open source social network running on atproto, the decentralized protocol we have built.

With Jack’s departure, we are searching for a new board member for the Bluesky public benefit company who shares our commitment to building a social network that puts people in control of their experience. More to come!

I might look for an installation manual for this. Most companies post them online.

That's not what the sales numbers show. People are still replacing their phones for new ones, but in China they're buying Chinese brands, not American brands. Huawei sales are WAY up and is eating into Apple's market.

The US and China have been battling back and forth over trade, espionage, political influence in Asia, etc. China has been trying to elbow out American brands in the country, and the US has been doing the same.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

The reason this is news is because this is a year over year dip. Sales usually slow now, but they're down more than normal.

It's also notable because China has been trying to squeeze American tech products out of certain industries, and we're now seeing American brands get replaced by massive growth with Chinese technology brands.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

If you look at the numbers, a LOT of this is China. Sales the western nation are pretty much flat year over year.

Apple sales are down YoY in China, and Huawei are way way up. A lot of these American devices now have their differentiating features stuck behind the great firewall, are outright banned if you work certain jobs, and are subject to a lot of propogada that is promoting national alternatives.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

If you bought one of these because you have a heat pump and want to consider the outside temp, that service is now cut off. Not ideal.

As long as HomeKit remains a thing.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

But it’s not an open standard, and all of the 3rd party home kit apps are basically a new client for services that Apple develops.

I say this as someone who sticks with HomeKit because I think it’s one of the better IOT solutions if you care about for privacy and security. My home is all HomeKit compatible. Lutron, Eve, and homebridge for odds and ends.

But I’m fully aware that, if Apple decided to pull the plug, I’d probably be running some sort of local home brewed HomeKit clone on a raspberry pi to keep the network alive.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, 100%. Home assistant can basically connect to any damn thing. Home assistant is going to be the fall back for a lot of legacy iot devices and platforms.

@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

“We’re seeing a greater need for authentic human connections”

I’m going to take a wild guess and wager that this is about increasing engagement by increasing the amount of opening moves that are created on the platform.

Dating sites profit by increasing engagement with the platform, not by getting you an “authentic connection” that gets you off the platform and into a healthy relationship.

There’s a reason people are going analog again. They know these sites are just a thirst trap.

Ghostalmedia , (edited )
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, but there is a new CEO, people are leaving the dating apps like crazy now, and they’re probably trying to do some shortsighted BS that will increase engagement now at the expense of eroding the long term health of the product experience.

I recently jumped ship to a new gig that MS’s account reps have burrowed deeply into.

It’s been about 7 years since I’ve been in a “Microsoft for all the things” shop. Now that I’m back in Microsoft land after 7 years, my first thought is “what the fuck happened in Redmond?”

The software is buggy, people are restarting left and right, and everything is missing 25% of their competitor’s features. I feel like I’m visiting a childhood home that is now occupied by hoarders.

Coworkers India for Silicon Valley teams = hope you like standup before bed.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

I haven’t seen anyone actually describe what this “team” is.

Tesla’s PR teams said that they’re still expanding the network, but at a slower pace. If that’s the case, I assume this mostly guts the product and program management folks, and the goal is to consolidate this department with a related department.

Does anyone actually have details about the full scope of layoffs and the scope of who remains?

Yikes.

Imagine taking your most strategic asset, and an industry leading product, then doing this to it.

Musk is this generation’s Howard Hughes. He was always eccentric and weird, but he’s aggressively sliding into his compulsions like Hughes did.

Hughes ended up locked away, in a dark penthouse, getting yearly fingernail cuts, with a collection of urine filled bottles.

Dude could’ve owned America’s next generation energy infrastructure if he played his cards right.

Hughes was the OG rich pee bottle guy.

Rabbit R1 is Just an Android App ( www.androidauthority.com )

See, it turns out that the Rabbit R1 seems to run Android under the hood and the entire interface users interact with is powered by a single Android app. A tipster shared the Rabbit R1’s launcher APK with us, and with a bit of tinkering, we managed to install it on an Android phone, specifically a Pixel 6a....

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Challenge accepted.
I’m going to get an IPhone, load up an Android cloud emulator, upload the Rabbit R1 app, then use it to access its orange version of ChatGPT.

Wait until people realize that it’s just ChatGPT.

You might want to look into smaller Lemmy instances that ask users to apply to join. Small instances can have pretty tight communities and you can meet people. People aren’t as faceless as they are on larger instances.

Fun fact, VPNs are regulated by the state in China

Mexico is heading towards its most violent election ever, with 30 candidates murdered, 77 threatened and 11 kidnapped ( english.elpais.com )

More than 170 attacks have been committed against politicians in the lead-up to the June elections. This violence has put campaigns under tension and is sowing doubts about governability in several regions. Specialists warn that the line between the Mexican state and organized crime is increasingly blurred...

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Of all the places the US does aggressive intervention in, I’m always surprised they aren’t more heavily involved in Mexico.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Dems have only had control of the FCC for a few months. It’s nice to see the regulators actually regulating, and not caving to corporate lobbyists.

I was expecting to see something more interesting. Looks like he basically just used it to float a monitor and Apple Notes over the patient. Which surgeons usually just do with a LCD display and a VESA mount arm on the ceiling.

I guess the cool thing is that you don’t need to touch a display. It’s all hands free and super sterile. That said, it’s not doing anything that you can’t do now for 1/4the the cost.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Except that they only allow one account right now, and you’d need one for each surgeon.
