To be fair, repairing any modern car is kind of a nightmare.

OneDrive automatically backups folders in Windows 11 without users' permissions ( windowsreport.com )

According to the latest reports, Windows 11 has made an independent choice by automatically turning on OneDrive folder backup for Desktop, Pictures, Documents, Music, and Video folders without your permission. This signifies that, whether you approve or not, everything is becoming coordinated with the cloud....

True, although their OSes don’t really disclose what is and is not being stored in the cloud by default. I like iCloud syncing, so it doesn’t bother me, but I could see how this would annoy others who want everything local.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Also, this is similar to a use case that Telsa likes to promote. They allow you to leave the climate on while the car is locked.

This makes me never want to trust the dog and camp modes they advertise.

Some Microsoft insiders worry the company's AI strategy has become too focused on its partnership with OpenAI.

A few even grumble that the software giant has turned into a glorified IT department for the hot startup. These comments were part of a recent exclusive story from Business Insider in which Microsoft insiders shared candid views on the company's AI future and its new Copilot tools.

The group at the center of this is Microsoft's AI Platform team, run by Eric Boyd. This sits within Scott Guthrie's Cloud + AI organization.

Insiders say Microsoft is focused less on the internal services that previously made up Azure AI Services and more on the Azure OpenAI service.

One former executive who left as a result of the changes said products like Azure Cognitive Search, Azure AI Bot Service, and Kinect DK are practically gone. Microsoft spokesman Frank Shaw said these services exist in some form but either aren't part of the Azure AI org, have been renamed, or have been bundled with other products.

"The former Azure AI is basically just tech support for OpenAI," a former Microsoft executive said. "Eric Boyd is effectively maintaining the OpenAI service. It's less of an innovation engine

Apparently the museum used outside investigators, and Fox / Nat Geo used internal investigators.

It wouldn’t surprise me to have a media company’s bias being toward protecting their content investment. That person’s face is in every show set to run, rerun, and stream. A museum is kind of different. It’s the in-person exhibits that are the main draw, and a their bigger risk is probably the litigation from substantiated allegations.

I work in this risk / ethics space, and I’m not surprised that the museum was more motivated to look into the claims, as opposed to simply saying they looked into the claims.

And that said, I’m also just some rando on the internet.

This is like telling your neighbor that you like pie, and after work, and after the kids are put to bed, they spend the night baking you a pie using the apples that grow in their yard.

When they come over with the warm pie that they went out of their way to bake, you say that you prefer cherry pie, then complain about having to go to the same old bakery to get a cherry pie.

Just say thank you, take the pie, and give it to someone who will appreciate it. And if you want cherry pie, offer to help out when they bake next and bring some damn cherries.

It’s also had the three finger tap gestures for 5 years. There are gestures to quickly copy, paste, undo, redo, etc.

They’re also something you need to learn and can’t really intuit. But, like shake, they are system wide.

Ghostalmedia ,

I’m always kind of surprised that, Google has yet to follow iOS in having universal, system wide, undo / redo shortcuts.

Back in iOS 1 and 2, we used to mock Apple for lacking universal undo. Then they added that shake to undo feature in iOS 3. That gesture is stupid as hell, and the newer three finger gestures are also kind of janky, but at least they work everywhere.

Apple is bringing RCS to the iPhone in iOS 18 | The new standard will replace SMS as the default communication protocol between Android and iOS devices ( www.theverge.com )

The long-awaited day is here: Apple has announced that its Messages app will support RCS in iOS 18. The move comes after years of taunting, cajoling, and finally, some regulatory scrutiny from the EU....

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

The bubbles will remain green. At the very least, it’s handy a hand way to tell if chat is unencrypted.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly. Encryption is coming later.

Also, there are iMessage specific features that are not part of RCS, so knowing what platform someone is on is still useful for cross platform communication.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Encryption was never part of the RCS standard, and Google has been gatekeeping the encryption solution that they’ve been using… which is why there aren’t a lot of E2EE RCS clients floating around.

Google finally conceded several months ago, and now encryption will be part of RCS and managed by an independent working group that Google, Apple, and others can contribute to.

Phase 1 of RCS is about implementing the unencrypted foundation of the protocol. Encryption is supposed to come when the working group has aligned.

I imagine Google was quick to update the model to not recommend glue. It was going viral.

Recall is done with a local model. It’s not uploaded to the cloud.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/privacy-and-control-over-your-recall-experience-d404f672-7647-41e5-886c-a3c59680af15

We built privacy and security into Recall's design from the ground up. With Copilot+ PCs, you get powerful AI that runs locally on your device. No internet or cloud connections are required or used to save and analyze snapshots. Your snapshots aren't sent to Microsoft. Recall AI processing occurs locally, and your snapshots are securely stored on your local device only.

Snapshots are encrypted by Device Encryption or BitLocker, which are enabled by default on Windows 11. Recall doesn't share snapshots with other users that are signed into Windows on the same device. Microsoft can't access or view the snapshots.

You can delete your snapshots at any time by going to Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots on your PC. Windows sets a maximum storage size to use for snapshots, which you can change at any time. Once that maximum is reached, the oldest snapshots are deleted automatically.

iPhones And Androids Can Now Warn You of 'Secret Trackers' ( www.ibtimes.co.uk )

In a collaborative effort, Apple and Google have developed an industry-standard detection feature called "Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers" (DULT) for Bluetooth trackers. This standard allows users on iOS and Android devices to be alerted if an unknown Bluetooth tracker is monitoring their location.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Well, good news, Bluetooth trackers are trash and inaccurate if they don’t use Apple or Google’s network.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

This use case has been covered since these products launched.

Apple Find My to Apple Find My network got notifications. Android Find My Device to Android Find My Device got notifications. And if Android users installed Apple’s Tracker Detect, they got notifications.

Now cross platform tracking will happen without the user having to download and install an app.

If you were stealing bikes, and didn’t have something like Tracker Detect installed on your Android phone, you’re not the smartest crook.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Both Apple and Google’s location tracking networks are end to end encrypted. Moreover, Apple and Google have refused to put backdoors into their encryption protocols because it’s a massive opportunity for security exploits that could tank their businesses.

If the cops want to find you, they’re probably just going to ask your phone carrier to triangulate you with their tower network, which they’ve been doing for decades. That’s way faster and easier than jumping through hoops to somehow use the Find My or Find My Device networks.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly. The tag IDs are anonymous and the clients are E2EE.

I’d be easier just to use cell towers.

Yeah, but ignoring the delete requests, and storing the data puts them out of compliance with European and American deletion and retention laws. And if they were lying, and were using user photos to train models, they have more than enough non-deleted photos already.

I’m not pulling out my jump to conclusions mat quire yet. The database corruption issue sounds more reasonable. That stuff happens, and Apple isn’t zeroing data. Most people aren’t. Because the data isn’t zeroed, a file can resurrect when a corruption issue is remedied.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

The difference here is that the files aren't on Apples servers, they are on your phones internal disk.

?

This is about files that are on iCloud servers. Specifically, some photos on iCloud servers don’t get properly flagged for deletion when the user requests it. Something was getting corrupted.

Apple fixed the corruption issue, so now a handful of photo files affected by it appeared to rise from the dead. The files were always there in the cloud, but something like a corrupted DB entry was hiding them from view. Users thought they were deleted, but they were in some sort of corruption purgatory. Not visible to the user, but still taking up storage space.

Once the corruption issue was remedied, the photo app recognized the files, didn’t realize they were previously flagged for deletion, then started to sync them to the device. AKA, download them.

And yes, you can run third party software on Apple’s operating system. There are quite a few third party apps for managing iOS and MacOS’s file system.

Big complaint isn’t a lack of 3rd party apps, it’s that it’s hard to side load apps that aren’t signed.

The odds of being in a fatal helicopter crash are impossibly small. 0.63 out of 100,000 in the USA

https://www.airmedandrescue.com/latest/news/us-helicopter-accident-rate-analysis

And if you read up on what causes a lot of these fatalities, you see a lot of accidents with pilots and personal aircraft, or pilots trying doing things like high risk medical evacuations.

The chances of dying in a helicopter air taxi are insanely small.

Where do you live where leeks are not common? Speaking for California here, they’re a common grocery store item.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

I feel like this thread is going really be “available in your part of the US.”

Grocery stores and populations are pretty varied across the US. What you can easily get in a San Francisco, Manhattan, or Boise grocery store can differ quite a bit.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, probably has more do to with proximity to at least a B tier grocery store. If your local grocer is Target, Walmart, or Family Dollar, then you’re only going to have access to the vegetables from Veggietales and bread from a plastic bag.

Ghostalmedia ,

Electric cars have a very legit use case for this… extended charge times. The video games and streaming apps are so you can kill time.

Telsa’s have pretty fast charge times, but even those are slower than a gasoline fill up. Moreover, if you get cursed with charging at a non-Telsa station, you could be there for quite a bit.

Yeah, sometimes you’re in BFE and there isn’t much around. Other times you just want to eat fast food in your car like an animal and watch a TV show that is too embarrassing to watch on the couch with your significant other.

Taiwan is selling more to the US than China in major shift away from Beijing ( apnews.com )

WASHINGTON (AP) — Whether it’s tapioca balls or computer chips, Taiwan is stretching toward the United States and away from China — the world’s No. 2 economy that threatens to take the democratically ruled island by force if necessary....

Ghostalmedia ,

Yeah. Taiwan is arguably the world’s most important player in semiconductors. It’s where the most cutting edge fabs are, it’s a big reason China and the west are quarreling over Taiwan, and why Biden has been trying to dump a shit load of money into catching up with Taiwan.

China invades Taiwan, the pandemic chip shortages are going to look like child’s play.
