I'd probably announce to people in other places that I'm going to host an AMA in a place that aligns more with my goals and that they're free to join and participate there.

Like what the fuck is a "Black WhatsApp"?

there are some modded Whatsapp versions that add features that don't exist in the official version, like hiding typing indicator for you while still being able to see the other person's, same with read markers, and so on. while I've never tried any myself, some of them seem to be legitimate.

I had no paywall on my end, probably a regional thing.

Chat control vote postponed: Huge success in defense of digital privacy of correspondence! ( www.patrick-breyer.de )

Today EU governments will not adopt their position on the EU regulation on “combating child sexual abuse”, the so-called chat control regulation, as planned, which would have heralded the end of private messages and secure encryption. The Belgian Council presidency postponed the vote at short notice. Once again the chat...

sadly, skewing stats like that gives Google more reason not to support Firefox in the long run.

Shame you can't try.before you buy

or at least buy it outside Play Store.

noodlejetski ,

whoa, I installed Android Studio, did all that, waited a bunch and it... worked? just like that? is that what you computer people do with computers at work? do I apply for a six figure job now?

noodlejetski ,

that's a name I haven't heard for a while, not since their data breach.

there's also LibRedirect, which covers many more services: https://libredirect.github.io/

not automatically, but it's fairly uncomplicated. you click on the extension icon and then a reload button next to the service that you're accessing, and it'll try accessing the page through another instance.

oh my god, this is delicious

edit: is this actually her tool, or just some random online test? because the actual app is still described as in making.

EU approval for chat control ( www.patrick-breyer.de )

We need to do something against this. The EU plans to apply a law for a chat control in the territory. The approval say that all the chats and the emails would be send to the government to do AI scanning to in fact “find the children abuses”, even when using apps with end-to-end encryption (the EU will ask the services to...

An Important Hypothetical - What Android Apps Do You Install?? ( sh.itjust.works )

You're twelve years old on Thanksgiving at six thirty in the morning. You'll be leaving for Grandma's in about a half hour, and she's lives a three hour drive away, going in one direction. You have nothing to prepare yourself on this journey, other than a tablet running Android Eleven. Beware, the speaker is broken and there is...

not being able to use contactless pay does not equal "NFC can't be used on anything".

noodlejetski ,

it's effectively the same thing since I've

big detail. I connect my Sony XM4s to my phone with NFC multiple times a day. not to mention that you still can use Google Pay on rooted devices with some workarounds. not to mention that some bank apps don't use Google Pay for contactless payments at all. I've been paying via NFC with my bank app on a rooted phone for years until they scrapped their own solution and adopted the GPay approach instead.

I honestly do not understand why anyone would want to watch TV on their fridge.

they've also recently implemented an Al chatbot, which will probably offset all the trees they've ever planted in the next week or so

edit: I read the comment above me too quickly, I was talking about Ecosia mentioned in the comment before that one, not Youcare.

because not everyone sees blocking RT and anti-vaxx websites as a problem

but once they start blocking obvious disinformation and conspiracy theories, where will it end?!!?!1

it's a fork (Next Generation) of deprecated SearX project.

We may collect aggregated, non-personal search data to improve search algorithms, train AI models

Decentralized Systems Will Be Necessary To Stop Google From Putting The Web Into Managed Decline ( www.techdirt.com )

Is Google signaling the end of the open web? That’s some of the concern raised by its new embrace of AI. While most of the fears about AI may be overblown, this one could be legit. But it doesn’t mean that we need to accept it....

and you know why all the copying/rewording or why all recipes include three paragraphs about how the author first discovered the dish during their trip to Toscania in 1997? because they're trying to game Google's requirements and get included in their search results.

Their real power is their ability to understand language and context.

...they do exactly none of that.

noodlejetski ,

Custom search engines are limited to PC browsers only. Unfortunately, the mobile versions of these browsers will not let you set up a custom search, so you're stuck tapping on the Web view in all your mobile search queries.

someone hasn't heard of Firefox on Android.

noodlejetski ,

can you set a custom URL, which is required to do what the article is talking about, or do you just pick from the predefined list of search engines?

edit: just checked and nope, you can only pick from Google, Yahoo, Bing, DuckDuckGo and Ecosia.

noodlejetski ,

depends on what you mean by "fixing", I guess. I just resorted to not using Google at all, and use uBlacklist to filter out garbage websites from my search results.

SteamOS is based on Arch, which you do not want to use and maintain as a beginner. what matter is the desktop environment, which in SteamOS' case is KDE Plasma, a great choice in my completely unbiased opinion.

the absolute state of capitalism-driven internet in the year 2024: you have to choose a specific option on an internet search engine website in order to search the internet.

noodlejetski ,

misogynistic jerks gonna be misogynistic jerks too, it appears.

noodlejetski ,

yes, it's when an immature jerk on the internet thinks it's okay to insult a woman because she had the absolute nerve to earn money in a way his puritan mindset doesn't approve of.

Kagi started as an AI company. and they do a bunch of weird things otherwise, which made me stop giving them money.
