The main reasons I've seen from vegans for not eating meat seem to be all about the morality of eating a sentient animal, the practices of the modern meat industry, and the environmental impact of it. And don't have anything to do with the taste of meat....
I grew up vegetarian and I'm used to regarding body parts as belonging to a living thing and to be used in service of it, not as food.
If others cannot stop eating meat from animals then I would find it less morally wrong to eat lab-grown. Still disgusting though. And unlikely to be very resource efficient. Or safe. That's my two pennies!

I wish I could donate to more novelists directly via their websites. I tend to pirate ebooks because I don't want a) the fuss of removing the DRM and b) to bankroll the destruction of the economy for 99% of people by giving money to big companies.

Stupid question but is it possible to get a virus from an MKV file that is less than 24 hours old. I was streamed using VLC version 3.0.20 form the repose on Linux.
I've seen a few posts and comments made by 'tankies' (I had to look up this term, as I've never seen it outside of Lemmy) and I don't think there should be such a moral panic about them. It implies that everyone is so impressionable that they can't be exposed to a minority fringe political opinion without being instantly turned into a rabid and dangerous extremist.
See something you don't agree with? Ignore it. Downvote it. Block it if you really want to. So many people seem to come here just looking for a fight with other users or to get some general outrage out of their system, whether it's 'tankies' or 'anti-tankies'. Just relax. Lemmy is diverse and ever-expanding; there's loads of fun, interesting and positive stuff to see and talk about here.
I will mention that smaller, niche communities have way more harmonious and interesting discussions. This suggests to me that the majority of aggro comes from people who are just logging in and scrolling down the 'front page' for something to do. It's worth putting in a bit of effort to find specific topics you're interested in and then looking at the feed of your subscriptions. It's a much better experience for everyone.

I would say that the greater the population (in part thanks to medicine) the greater the chances of beneficial mutations occurring and entering the collective gene pool. I see medicine as a safety net. I'm sure it's more complicated than that, but that's my professional take on it, as a musician.
I'm thinking about offering some workshops. My local authority has funds available for courses and workshops which benefit the community, aimed particularly at people on low incomes. It would be fairly basic stuff, like where to access free software, the advantages of it, some recommendations and perhaps even some introductory lessons on using software like Libreoffice, Thunderbird, KeepassXC, GIMP, F-droid, the Fossify suite etc.
Thanks so much for your advice. Listening has come a lot in this discussion and I wasn't expecting it... Why is that? is it because listening shows a daughter that she matters?
I'm sorry that your dad said those things about food and weight and it caused that for you. I'm also really grateful for the advice and happy that you had sweet times together too. It's really cool that he took you with him for hose trips.
I can see see myself prone to those mistakes, as well as reluctant to avoid them. So it's good to know they're important and that it's worth trying to. Thanks for that
Yeah, it's like that as an adult too. Pretty much everything feels better when there is a sense of compassion and empathy but not always the case with solutions. It makes me think that in general as humans we are much more concerned with each other than we are with the world. Or even ourselves, perhaps.
Thanks so much for your comment - it's given me confidence, compassion and some peace too :) It's taken me nearly a week to read everyone's replies and over that time it has made me feel quite emotional too. We all have so much love and goodness that we want to make happen the world. I'm eally glad I made this post.
I think you still have to have an account (last time I used it anyway), but you're right, there is a tier you don't have to pay any money for. It's just an email address but whatever. You can use it via their website but afaik they haven't released a free model based on the data they've scraped off us, so you can't host it on your own hardware and properly do what you want with it. I have heard though that commercial websites were/are using ChatGPT bots for customer service and you can easily use the customer service chatbots on their website to do other random stuff like writing bash scripts or making yo mama jokes.
