She didn’t wake up from her afternoon nap in late May, on the dusty scrap of land she knew as home, with only a blue plastic sheet to shade her.

-“This is what Indian vulnerability looks like,” says Aditya Valiathan Pillai, who studies policy responses to extreme heat at the New Delhi-based thinktank Sustainable Futures Collaborative.

“You have 75% of India's working population, well over 350 million people who are directly heat exposed because of their jobs,” he says, citing World Bank data.

On a shaky phone line arranged by a friend, she tells NPR that she pushed together a lean-to near her tree where she gave birth.

In fact, some areas of India may become the first places on earth to be exposed to heatwaves so extreme that humans will not be able to survive them without air conditioning or other types of cooling, according to a 2020 study by the consulting group McKinsey.

The dead included 33 poll workers in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, where citizens were casting their vote in the last stage of India’s six-week elections that ended on June 4.

i gotta say, this AutoTL:DR seems kind of...bad. "she tells NPR" is a pronoun attached to person that is not named elsewhere in the TLDR. Maybe Beehaw should look into banning this one? I'm not sure how to offer feedback to the bot's author.

Auzy , to Politics in A retired federal judge says Judge Cannon appears to show 'favoritism' toward Trump

Nah. Stealing top secret documents and showing them to random people to make your dong seem bigger isn't that important

/S

The scary thing isn't the people we know he's shown them to. I seem to recall there are still some missing, and we don't know the extent to which the information on them has been exposed

tiefling , (edited )

He's literally giving up information about our spies and causing them to "disappear"

The dude is a traitorous piece of shit who deserves to be punished for treason

Auzy ,

You do realise I was joking right? The /s is for sarcasm

Republicans have already switched from calling it a witch hunt to "what about Biden"

Lexam , to Politics in A retired federal judge says Judge Cannon appears to show 'favoritism' toward Trump

Now could we hear from someone who has the power to do something about it?

Like who? The Supreme Court? I don't think you're gonna like what they have to say...

Lexam ,

Exactly

Congress is the authority over federal judges with respect to impeachment and trial. Since Congress is spineless, nothing will be done.

I have to respect the restraint the retired judge showed here. I don't find it appropriate, but it's professional, unlike Cannon.

In other news, retired federal judge has eyes.

Why not make an Ai that can look for a cure to his cancer?

Yeah that seems healthy

autotldr Bot , to Politics in Justice Thomas took more trips paid for by GOP donor than he disclosed, senator says

The subpoena of Harlan Crow, the conservative mega donor, revealed that Thomas took a private jet to travel between St. Louis and Kalispell, Mont., and a return flight to Dallas in May 2017; in March 2019, he took a private jet from Washington, D.C., to Savannah, Ga., and back; and in June 2021, the justice traveled from Washington, D.C., to San Jose, Calif., and back.

A statement from Sen. Dick Durbin, the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said: “The documents also showed private jet travel for the recently-disclosed July 2019 trip to Indonesia; an eight-day yacht excursion for the recently-disclosed July 2019 trip to Indonesia; and private jet travel for the recently-disclosed July 2019 trip to Santa Rosa, California, all of which Thomas failed to disclose in his amendment to his 2019 financial disclosure report last week.

Additionally, Crow’s documents show different dates for the July 2019 Indonesia trip, further calling into question the accuracy of the details Justice Thomas decides to disclose.”

Under pressure from Congress and the public, the court last November adopted its first-everethics code — one that lacks an enforcement mechanism.

Public trust in the court has fallen amid revelations that Thomas received gifts and travel from Crow.

Justice Samuel Alito has also been criticizedfor failing to disclose a fishing tripwith Paul Singer, a big Republican donor with cases before the Supreme Court.

literally the plot of Caprica

Cethin ,

Sadly, no one knows the plot of Caprica because we're the only two people in the world who watched it. It's impressive how well BSG was received and is remembered and most people don't even know Caprica exists.

Marin_Rider ,

it is a shame. i wished they were able to make another season but i guess just for the 2 of us it wouldnt have made much sense!

Transcendence and Black mirror both ended really well. Keep at it. T200's next.

Black Mirror is not an instruction manual, people. Quite the opposite. Can we stop trying to make every episode real?

If you don't want to do it then don't do it. Can we stop trying to tell everyone else they have to have the same values as you?

This was my first thought. How bout let’s not try to recreate the dystopian fictional TV show.

intensely_human ,

We’re not “trying to make every episode real”. Technology’s direction and human foibles are predictable. Black Mirror writers just aren’t blind and have a good sense of what’s coming down the pipeline.

That’s why it’s called Mirror. It’s about showing us who we are.

Sorry if that’s too horrifying for you, but this goes way beyond imitating the last person to mention these problems.

It made me think of this old Michael Keaton movie, "My Life", in which he leaves a treasure trove of video tapes to his unborn child.
