I mean, we do have recourse — Congress — who have the power of impeachment. The problem is that they are spineless and won’t get rid of the three lying pieces of shit that Trump got confirmed.

I’m so, so sorry.

Are you embracing AI? ( viewber.co.uk )

There’s something of a misunderstanding in the UK property industry that agents are luddites, clinging to fax machines and Rolodexes, but quite the opposite is true. Sales and letting agents like nothing more than finding new efficiencies – whether through careful outsourcing, digital signatures or virtual tours, begging the...

Everything said in that article makes me very happy to have switched to Firefox.

Google can dress this up all they want, but a happy byproduct of this (for them) is that they can now purposefully ignore rules/filtering for their own sites, such as youtube, since it puts the real control of such filtering with the browser (and the company who created it) instead of the extension. Yes there is a trust concern with extensions. And yes, there is a performance hit with extensions vetting each network call. But that’s the price we, as the user, should continue to have the power to choose to pay, but Google is forcing us to go their way.

Thanks Mozilla, for providing user choice.

Congress is the authority over federal judges with respect to impeachment and trial. Since Congress is spineless, nothing will be done.

what's your current linux distro?

wanting to hop into the world of linux on a dual boot method (one of my favorite games unfortunately cannot be run on linux at all, and it's a gacha. I don't want to gamble with my account being banned, so I'm keeping windows for it specifically.) this'll be my second go at it, I used Pop!_OS briefly but had some issues with...

You are right. They can’t for every distro.

But fedora/rhel, Ubuntu/debian, and arch-based distros are the most commonly used. So they can provide official packages for those, and/or as the OP said, provide an official flatpak.

And to be fair, it’s a nice-to-have to have a better sense of trust, but given the unofficial ones are open source, it’s quite likely any maliciousness would be rooted out very quickly.

Holly Hunter and now Paul Giamatti. They must have some major money for this project. I can’t wait!!

Both. I tend to let the -arr apps decide.

We like to laugh and play here about Linux quite a bit

We do? Aside from the "I use Arch, btw" memes, I must not have got that memo :) And, uhh...I use Arch, btw.

Fuck, ignoring the obvious pron implications that I assume everyone here is immediately thinking of, think of HIPAA, think of the private communications with therapists that people have, think of all of the financial documents you’ve opened, think about bank accounts, chats, fucking everything.

So much this. I'm glad I dumped Windows and this just guarantees that I'll never return.

I'm thinking seriously about getting Google out of my life, and trying NextCloud.

Looking to get a personal account through a managed provider.

Does anyone have any experience with it?

How does it compare to ownCloud?

Any hosts I should look at or avoid?

Any apps I should get for it, or avoid?

Any issues I should be aware of before I switch?

@asklemmy

ulkesh ,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

If you ever decide to self-host and not use a managed provider, take this advice: install it on an SSD (fastest possible you can).

ulkesh ,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

The answer to that is…yes.

ulkesh ,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

I like the concept of atomic distros, but the implementation leaves a lot to be desired for me. Having to reboot after installing any software seems counterproductive to me (admittedly this was my very limited experience when I tried Bazzite).

ulkesh ,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

Learned something new, thank you! I’m old school so it’s going to take some time to acclimate I think.

ulkesh ,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

Well I'm not on it anymore because it frustrated this old aging brain. I'm currently on Garuda. But I may give it a go in a VM again.

ulkesh ,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

Perhaps I’m misunderstanding the intent here, but doesn’t “heading towards peak” literally mean “increase” in this context?

ulkesh ,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

You and me both. I’d rather it just be Pop!OS. Or just, Pop. Or the better term: Soda.

ulkesh ,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

I love the fact that System76 is an American company pushing Linux forward (well to certain degrees, anyway). I know they use hardware produced in other countries (for chassis at minimum, not sure about the rest of the components), but it’s still nice to see.

Next time I’m in the market for a laptop, I’ll certainly give them a solid look (hopefully the form factors of the more powerful systems will be less…girthy…by then).

Pop!_OS is quite solid. I’ve used it from time to time. However, I’m partial to Arch because I like to be closer to the bleeding edge (currently using Garuda for my gaming rig).

ulkesh ,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

Edit: the linux-company thing is just for triggering people, sorry I didn’t know it was this effective.

So you’re a dick. Got it.

ulkesh ,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

He literally admitted to posting to trigger people. I’m stating fact that by doing so he’s being a dick. The motives of the person matters and he came in here with the purpose of pissing people off.

Clearly it worked for some.

ulkesh ,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

I couldn’t care less about the original post, but I will also call people out in the hopes that they stop being a dick to others. Anyone who enjoys seeing people get agitated needs to have their head examined.

ulkesh ,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

The first step in fixing your problem is admitting you have one. Good job!

ulkesh ,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

Some people don’t like to read, and/or don’t like truth and facts spoken/written to them. So they take offense to logic and reason, which is what you had in your answer.

ulkesh ,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

Asking for and/or expecting unpaid volunteers is most definitely not valid.

If he wants to pay them properly, then I would agree.

ulkesh ,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

So basically don’t be stupid when on a network you don’t control. I mean I would think that would be common sense by now. Just because you’re on a VPN doesn’t mean that the local network doesn’t have some semblance of capabilities.

And maybe I read it wrong, but perhaps don’t use DHCP on a network you don’t control. Wouldn’t that wholly mitigate this?

I get that this is concerning for people who don’t know any better. But I don’t think it’s as devastating as the title makes it sound.

Much more likely it’s a doctored photo just to make the joke. Either way, it’s sad.

I recently bought an AMD card just to not have to deal with Linux NVIDIA nonsense anymore. I know not everyone can be in a situation that allows them to do this. But if you can, and if you don’t want to wait on the hope that all the NVIDIA issues will be resolved when explicit sync finally hits all the distro repos and the NVIDIA driver (it’s going to still take some months), I’d advise going AMD.

I’ve had nothing but buttery smoothness since switching, running Wayland with two displays at different refresh rates, and gaming works phenomenally well with no frame loss that I can tell and no stuttering/tearing.

If you are more patient than I and continue with NVIDIA, I wish you all the luck and hope the trickling in of the various fixes and libraries and drivers happen rapidly.

Yep, he’s not anywhere near the visionary, the inventor, or the genius that he has made sure surrounds his persona in media.

He got handed money, invested it, and got lucky twice. A monkey could do that with a couple of levers.

I believed the hype as well, for quite some time. Then I listened to the bullshit he was saying and realized he’s just a copy of Donald Trump or Rupert Murdoch — people who happen to have money and are able to fool millions of other people that they’re intelligent because they happen to have money.

ulkesh ,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

I’m pretty sure many on the left know quite well that Trump and his followers are all pieces of shit.

ulkesh ,

ulkesh ,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

I run Manjaro as my gaming rig and have had no real issues.

ulkesh ,
@ulkesh@beehaw.org avatar

It does! But I recently gave Bazzite a try...yeah I'm not ready for this so-called atomic distro (it's based on Fedora). I'm now, for the moment, settled on Garuda Linux (based on Arch). I'm liking it thus far, but if anything goes awry, I may head back to Manjaro. Garuda is much closer to Arch prime (running 6.8.9 linux-zen kernel where Manjaro is on 6.6.x still). And the chaotic-aur is actually kinda nice. Time will tell if I stick with it!
