For privacy? No.

For security? Knock yourself out. Won't hurt.

If I ever upload photos publicly, I will add a background blur first

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I mean I'm sure it depends on how it's blurred.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

wait long enough and a technique to unblur will be developed.

You can't just program data that doesn't exist into existence.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

You do realize that a lot of image recognition was done on scaled down images?

Is that supposed to mean something to me?

with some brain power (or AI), you can reduce the number of required guesses

It's still just guessing.

helenslunch OP ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

That sounds like it would defeat the purpose of the VPN almost entirely.

helenslunch OP ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Reddit is one of the main problems for sure.

helenslunch OP ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

You make a good point.

helenslunch OP ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

How do you know which ones are "new"? I've tried to switch servers but there are literally hundreds and I can't try them all.

helenslunch OP ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I see, thanks for the tip!

helenslunch OP ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

The fact that this even exists is hilarious. Not to mention that it's actually a "featured" extension in the Chrome Web Store. Google is actively promoting a product that defeats their own product.

Have you used it? Does it work?

helenslunch OP , (edited )
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I try not to but those websites comprise most of the internet at this point. Unfortunately people also use VPNs to do nefarious shit, so it's not always malicious (though it obviously mostly is).

helenslunch OP ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Yeah I used to do that before they broke all of them. Used the Stealth app every day but it stopped working a few months ago. Possibly due to VPN, don't really know exactly how that service works.

helenslunch OP ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I'll try Redlib, thanks for the heads up.

Edit:

The official instance is hosted at https://redlib.matthew.science

It's already broken.

Stealth continued working for a few months after they killed the API.

RedReader is just a terrible app, if I'm honest.

Will try Geddit but I doubt they will hold up to Stealth. It was so good :'(

helenslunch OP ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

I would avoid trying to make sure you use the "official instance" as it kind of works against the projects purpose of decentralizing web requests.

I would but I didn't know where to find them.

you can find active instances here on the uptime monitor

Thanks

stealth should work just fine if u turn on webscraping mode

Nope

Geddit also doesn't do anything but a constant loading indicator.

HOW DARE YOU

You have been, thank you.

Too late for this joke

helenslunch OP ,

Kinda pointless

helenslunch OP ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

If you’re using it for privacy, yeah, it wouldn’t help

...he posted in c/privacy

helenslunch OP ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

If you’re trusting any other VPN provider, then you’re already willing to trust someone

It's not an issue of trust but of obfuscation. You're sharing IPs with other users

A VPN gives you very little added privacy.

Wrong.

No matter what you use, you’re really only protecting yourself from your own ISP.

Wrong again. You're protecting yourself from having your traffic logged by the sites you visit. Every modern website is collecting this information and selling it to data brokers.

helenslunch OP ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

You think that using a VPN is protecting you from the website you’re connecting to logging that traffic?

It is logging the traffic. It just prevents it from collecting my personal information in that log and sharing it with all of their data mining buddies.

The only thing they don’t see is your home IP address. That’s not even a useful piece of information for tracking someone.

I don't even know how to respond to that, other than of course it is...

Websites track you through cookies and etags, and VPNs do not block those.

You assume that I'm not also blocking those things.

If they did, you wouldn’t be able to log into any websites

Do you not understand the difference between first and third-party cookies?

bug-ridden experiences

That's one of the best parts of the game though.

Other games have functional crossplay without it.

As does HD2...

Nextcloud appreciation post

After months of waiting, I finally got myself an instance with Libre Cloud. I was expecting basic file storage with a few goodies but boy, this is soooo much more. I am amaze by how complete this is!!! Apps let me configure my instance to fit everything I need, my workflow is now crazy fast and I can finally say goodbye to...

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

It's alright. It is confusing as shit to use though. Their UI is terrible.

TIL "setting up and tweaking Nextcloud to your liking" = starting docker

@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

rabbit r1 is not an Android app. We are aware there are some unofficial rabbit OS app/website emulators out there...to clear any misunderstanding and set the record straight, rabbit OS and LAM run on the cloud with very bespoke AOSP and lower level firmware modifications, therefore a local bootleg APK without the proper OS and Cloud endpoints won’t be able to access our service.

I dunno what a "bespoke firmware modification" is but 99+% of apps run "in the cloud" (dependent on remote servers)

I'm seeing a lot of bad reviews of F40. I'd probably wait

helenslunch ,

I'm quite fond of this feature actually (in Immich).

FUTO is the company that also hired Louis Rossman. They also make the Grayjay video app, FUTO Voice (offline voice recognition keyboard, as well as FUTO keyboard), and Circles (a Matrix-based private social media app), and many other cool things.

They have a literal free lunch every Friday and I've been a couple times. Eron the owner seems like your typical tech billionaire. You're definitely right that it seems "too good to be true" but we're in the midst of the worst of times for technology and they just keep doing all the right things.

Most of their stuff is licensed under a FUTO license, often called "source available".

Everything is a paid app, but also if you choose not to pay, as Louis says, "that's between you and your God".

my clipboard seems to include an invisible link to some scummy sounding website

I reported it. Should be fixed soon.

Last time I checked there was no functioning Mobilizon instance based in North America

There is, because I run it 😀

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

You're not going to get anything like that for $150.

~$200 will get you a nice mini PC with 16GB RAM

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Have you tried picking yourself up by your bootstraps?

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

Great, it has audio emojis but can't send unknown callers to voicemail. How fucking brilliant.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

🤣

helenslunch ,

Google has zero shame. They made that abundantly clear when they moved the gallery button to the opposite side in the camera to match Apple (a distinct feature in an otherwise identical and shitty camera app).

Starting to see this is the auto industry and EVs where they copy all the dumb shit Tesla does.

Matrix is okay but very slow.

I would highly recommend Revolt, for sure.

helenslunch ,

I like getting new features 🤷

And I like it when a software update makes my device feel new.

helenslunch ,
@helenslunch@feddit.nl avatar

That's very cool with the exception that it has the same horrific UI as Spotify...

Yo how the fuck did we have caller ID in the 90s, and now we have almost nothing?
