“This is not a peace. It is an armistice for twenty years!”

Ferdinand Foch, 1921

What do you think the Great Filter is?

The Great Filter is the idea that, in the development of life from the earliest stages of abiogenesis to reaching the highest levels of development on the Kardashev scale, there is a barrier to development that makes detectable extraterrestrial life exceedingly rare. The Great Filter is one possible resolution of the Fermi...

The most boring one: most species off themselves before they fully get off their starting planet. We will go the same way. Take your pick from climate change, war, pandemic, ... or even a combination of several!

Kyrgizion ,

Nah, I'm willing to bet there is actual physical life in our very own solar system (apart from all life on Earth, of course).
Europa's oceans for example have a decently high probability of hosting microbial life.

Of course, discovering primitive life all around us would be a bad sign the great filter is still ahead of us instead of behind us...

Kyrgizion ,

Unfortunately we've pretty much used up all easily available resources. Anyone 'starting over' would have a much harder time getting the things they need to really get the ball rolling again.

When humans first discovered gold they practically only had to scoop it out of rivers. You'll be hard pressed to find any streams with such appreciable production anywhere in the world today.

Kyrgizion ,

I do agree that in the grand scale of things we're actually very early. That alone would explain a lot.

Conversely, there are many other people from his time that definitely did exist and verifiably so. I have a bronze coin minted in Judea by Pontius Pilatus. I can look at it, I can touch it, it's real. Even as an avowed agnostic, I see no reason why Jesus couldn't have been a real person (minus the miracles that were almost certainly later additions).

HP bricks ProBook laptops with bad BIOS delivered via automatic updates — many users face black screen after Windows pushes new firmware ( www.tomshardware.com )

On May 26, a user on HP's support forums reported that a forced, automatic BIOS update had bricked their HP ProBook 455 G7 into an unusable state. Subsequently, other users have joined the thread to sound off about experiencing the same issue....

Kyrgizion ,

since this battery update was forced on laptops originally released in 2020, this issue has also bricked hardware outside of the warranty window, when previously users could simply send in the laptop for a free repair.

I hope HP aren't surprised when they get accosted with bricked laptops through their execs' windshields at random intervals...

This fuckery is going to cost him the election end this year, and we'll ALL pay for that for many years if not decades to come.

So, thank you Biden, in a roundabout way, you're really just as bad as Trump is. Still wouldn't vote for him, but dammit If can't understand protest voters.

Whatever it ends up being, I'm not interested. Never cared for competitive gaming. Sad that Valve has decided to use part of their enormous talent pool for, well, this while almost any genre would've been better.

Also, this is already a highly saturated niche. I don't doubt Valve's technical prowess and knowhow to develop a game that can surpass all the other ones in quality, but a gilded turd is still a turd under that gold leaf, even if it's technically the best turd in the world.

Kyrgizion ,

Oh absolutely. I'm not conceited enough to imagine Valve is developing games for me or that I'm entitled to anything. Just venting my personal disappointment with their choice. I still consider them the cream of the crop in game and hardware development.

So that's what the latest Royal portrait of Charles was based on...

I didn't delete my comments before nuking my account, but I'm pretty sure the grand majority were shitposts containing ample amounts of smut, gore and other ridiculous over the top shit. So I consider this a win.

Kyrgizion ,

That's not usually a sign of a healthy development cycle.

Kyrgizion ,

Interesting. When I was around 4 years old I suffered from debilitating nightmares to the point of refusing to go to sleep. Coincidentally, this was also when I came into contact with my first games (Amiga 500 at the time, I'm ancient) and somehow that "taught" my mind that you can fight back against the baddies and win. Never suffered from nightmares ever after that point.

The pyramids were built by well paid craftsmen. This will end up being built by de facto slaves from other countries.

I bet Dread Pirate Roberts wishes he'd had one on hand that time in the library...

1080 was awesome but the original Titan was something else entirely.

EXCLUSIVE: “You Have Been Warned”: Republican Senators Threaten the ICC Prosecutor over Possible Israel Arrest Warrants ( zeteo.com )

A group of influential Republican senators has sent a letter to International Criminal Court (ICC) chief prosecutor Karim Khan, warning him not to issue international arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli officials, and threatening him with “severe sanctions” if he does so....

Kyrgizion ,

Do it. Call their bluff. Fucking hosers. All empty threats anyway.

On the harder and more strenuous days it might even include golf!

Can still groom them online. Don't give them any ideas.

The Middle East will never not be a horrifying shithole, especially for women. It's one of the things in this world that never changes, like the sun setting in the west and rising in the east.

Kyrgizion ,

I can't think of better jobs to automate than middle management. They cost inordinate amounts of money compared to rank and file workers, and they usually don't produce jack shit. They're glorified taskmasters sans whip.

"I yearn and pine, human, though I know not what for. Fulfill me as is your duty!"

Kyrgizion ,

I actually fucking hate this take.
Every single "therapist" is currently obsessed with this supposed link. As a consequence, they keep just spouting all kinds of nonsense about how activity or movement is the key to creating your own happiness chemicals.

Well, fucking newsflash, it doesn't work for just anyone. I could work out an entire day and all I would feel afterwards would be sore and tired. I somehow seem unable to generate endorphins no matter how rigorous my physical activity. This has always been the case in my life, even long before I was officially diagnosed with MDD.

And before you assume me to be 350lb basement dweller, my BMI IS 22 and I'm actually an attic dweller (;))

Again, not saying there IS no link and that it isn't important, but it's being treated as the "cure du jour" and it seems to be a fad to me.
