Interesting, robot faces made with living skin have quite the opposite effect on me.

If it comes to the USA, it's too late. The recent outbreak has cemented in the minds of Americans that this is a Gay™ disease, and it only affects those pesky Gays. Therefore, the vaccine will be refused in even higher amounts than other vaccines. "I'm not a Gay. I don't have to worry about it."

What do you think the Great Filter is?

The Great Filter is the idea that, in the development of life from the earliest stages of abiogenesis to reaching the highest levels of development on the Kardashev scale, there is a barrier to development that makes detectable extraterrestrial life exceedingly rare. The Great Filter is one possible resolution of the Fermi...

My favorite filter is the amount of phosphorous in the universe. Earth has an unusually high amount, and it's vital for life. I like this one, because as more stars die, the amount of phosphorous goes up, implying we won't be alone forever.

Anyway, look up "Issac Arthur" on YouTube for HOURS of content about the Fermi paradox and potential great filters.

I'm gonna add to this by saying phosphorus may be my favorite, but I think the most likely filter is just time, twice.

Do you know how unlikely it is that earth has been habitable for so long? Do you know how long life was single-celled? One of the theories for how advanced (eukaryotic) cells formed was the combination of at least three different branches of life into the same cell! Archaea (cell wall), bacteria (mitochondria/chloroplasts), and viruses (nucleus). Do you know how unlikely that sounds? Do you know how long it would take for that to happen randomly? Most planets probably aren't even habitable for that long. Once we became eukaryotic, we started progressing much faster.

Then, keep in mind, the life has to continue to exist for billions of more years while it waits for the advanced life to happen again within the same section of the galaxy. So, time is two filters - both behind us and in front of us.

I had a coworker who was a night auditor at a hotel. She had two jobs, but night auditor was her "main" job. She really liked it, and she said it was mostly very quiet. At her hotel, the night auditor also checked in guests who arrived at night. She said she only had a few a night, and she worked in a tourist town.

I dream every night. I even dream frequently while taking naps, sometimes as short as 15-20 minutes.

Many dreams I forget shortly upon waking. As in, I can't remember what it was about by the time I get out of bed. But, I do actually remember the dream for a few seconds, so I know it happened. The majority of my dreams I can recall for the rest of the morning or even day. If something noteworthy happened, I can remember the dream for days, weeks, or years. I really depends on how impactful/meaningful the dream was.

I have not used sleep journals or anything of that nature to help me remember dreams. I have always been like this. I also have had sleep paralysis and sporadic insomnia for about as long as I can remember - not severe or frequent enough to need treatment.

Oh, don't worry. They're ending support for old teams soon. You won't have a choice anymore.

Not only are new teams notification banners annoying, new teams no longer makes a noise for every single notification, like it used to. I rather have a ding than a banner, especially since I tend to use all of my screen space.

I would argue cereal is cold porridge.

If you ever sweat, like ever, smart watches may not be for you. I've had 3, different brands (all Android Wear OS), and my sweat eventually tarnished the charging contacts to the point of no use (even after being cleaned with alcohol and something abrasive) all three times.

So, if you sweat, you're gonna wanna make sure the charging contacts don't touch your skin. Ever.

Do the development versions have a history of having more risqué splash screens? Is there a list of them somewhere?

How should I change my polite behavior to be more accommodating?

My parents raised me to always say "yes sir" and "no ma'am", and I automatically say it to service workers and just about anyone with whom I'm not close that I interact with. I noticed recently that I had misgendered a cashier when saying something like "no thank you, ma'am" based on their appearing AFAB, but on a future visit...

janNatan ,

Wait, what's the gender neutralish German honorific?

janNatan ,

Oh! I was thinking maybe "geerhte" but that makes way more sense. Duh.

janNatan ,

I'd say so far, my best decision has been saying "ok" when an old coworker offered me an interview at a new job.

OP, do you mind if I ask what your native language is?

janNatan ,

Even if it did work, why would you do it? You'd still be playing League of Legends.

Scientists make breakthrough with advanced technology generating water from thin air — and it could save millions of lives ( www.thecooldown.com )

Researchers in China have reportedly developed a new technology similar to hydropanels for harvesting water out of thin air that is powered by energy from the sun. The device could be especially useful in dry, arid areas where water — but not sunlight — is hard to come by....

janNatan ,

Ok, but did the Chinese scientists even once stop to think about what an excess of clean, drinkable water would do... to the economy?

janNatan ,

I was sitting in a friend's couch one day, and I said to him, "you're awfully jittery today." To which he replied, "I have Tourette's."

I had no idea. His tic was to twist his head slightly to the right. Fairly subtle.
