Kinda makes everyone else jerks if they’re buying clothes from makers who could afford their next meal regardless.

Decentralized Systems Will Be Necessary To Stop Google From Putting The Web Into Managed Decline ( www.techdirt.com )

Is Google signaling the end of the open web? That’s some of the concern raised by its new embrace of AI. While most of the fears about AI may be overblown, this one could be legit. But it doesn’t mean that we need to accept it....

Wish I had time yesterday to do a comparison myself, using better clips from Her and the newest OpenAI demo clips. Plus would get the ChatGPT app to speak some lines from Her.

They could!

Obviously we need UBI cuz…

Capitalism. “Free” washes would increase rent. And benefit high-volume washers! Might increase lines though (wash more often with no skin in the game), pull back people who may be using laundromats as an alternative. Detrimental to low-volume washing households.

Mostly I’d say it’s an optics thing. Cost per year to exist wouldn’t change much, but clearly public opinion could.

Wow nice. Any opinions on how these fingerprinting evaluators compare?

Sad a pretty stock iPhone that’s blocking via some filterlists and using iCloud Private Relay (a “VPN”) is so detectable! Should be so many browsers appearing similar but there’s always this & that that mean I’m unique.

“Unprecedented” is kinda hot right now. Tries to mitigate too much blame being heaped on: “obviously we prepare for the usual and even the unexpected, but this has literally never happened before (give us another shot pls)”.

So it’s interesting for the news that it takes on a different context when said breathlessly: “UNPRECEDENTED failure!”

I guess they weren’t paying quite enough to have offline backups? I believe financial institutions can keep stuff stored in caves (think records of all the mortgages a bank wants to be repaid for - data loss isn’t an option).

There’s an important corollary to all this. I (and we at Mozilla) don’t have all the good ideas. We never will. So, consider my inbox to be yours. Got an idea? Let’s talk: [email protected]

Arizona accuses Amazon of being a monopoly and deceiving consumers with “dark patterns” ( www.theverge.com )

Arizona's Attorney General, Kris Mayes, filed two lawsuits against Amazon on Wednesday for allegedly engaging in deceptive business practices and maintaining monopoly status. The first lawsuit accuses the company of using dark patterns to keep users from canceling their Amazon Prime subscriptions, violating Arizona's Consumer...

I like how Facebook intentionally delays spam reports made via Messenger on desktop. That’s after clicking through excessive prompts (which are more understandable due to the general public’s abuse of reporting features).

Agreed, imagine what it would cost custom (though not necessarily DIY) or from a medical device manufacturer (shudder).

Are women excluded from the group of people whose “mommies do everything for them”? Perhaps commonly, it’s a genuine question.

I do see the thought of it being a mom instead of a dad adheres to traditional gender roles, although I wonder about an individual’s obligation to resist playing into that tradition. I can see it being harmful.

Tagless labels disappearing isn’t ideal. It's a bummer that clothing has been produced so cheaply over the last some years that now much of it, which is donated overseas, ends up not being worth repairing and/or reselling.

In the context of online discussions:

I'm pretty big on spending, say, 100 seconds on Google when I see something interesting come up on Lemmy or in a group chat or something. I often find a snippet or a photo I can reply with, and from there I might ask a question that digs deeper. I might be able to do more research to answer the further question myself, but at that point I've shown some interest and further discussion may seem less burdensome since at least the person doesn't have to paraphrase the first sentence of the relevant Wikipedia article.

That’s iPhone

Seriously: I don’t think the cost benefit is there to intentionally make a maneuver like this. Any crap they pull needs to have a perfectly proper explanation, with our agreement to a specific term buried somewhere in their policies. Can only imagine how much money they blew throwing these billboards up all over the San Francisco Bay area. We have to buy Apple over Google for ostensible privacy gains, and Apple has to lock us in to their walled gardens to make up for their comparatively smaller ad/data business.

This post assumes Apple is aethical (that’s like amoral but for ethics right?) but still a self-interested economic actor. They can’t let short-term greed get in the way of long-term greed!

Obscure screw added so appliance cannot be disassembled ( lemmy.world )

Basic blender went bad (motor ran but spindle wasn't rotating). I wanted to disassemble to see if it could be repaired. Three of the four screws were Phillips head. I had to cut the casing open in order to discover why I couldn't unscrew the fourth. It was a slotted spanner.

Edit - ah, since you can’t see the screw until you cut away at the product, the company is still going to frustrate even the crafty DIYers

Universal happiness and prosperity could be a part of an agenda as well right?

brbposting ,

That really sucks. Can practically feel the tension through your post. What a bummer… shouldn’t kill anybody to let somebody else be happy doing their own thang (and be happy not necessarily copying another person’s thang).

Less importantly:

When I think about 'universal happiness', I’d think it’s more about creating conditions where everyone has the opportunity to pursue their own version of happiness, rather than imposing a single idea of happiness on everyone.

EA wants to place in-game ads in its full-price AAA games, again ( www.techspot.com )

EA has tried this before, with predictable results. In 2020, EA Sports UFC 4 included full-screen ads for the Amazon Prime series The Boys that would appear during 'Replay' moments. These were absent from the game when it launched, with EA introducing the ads about a month later, thereby preventing them from being highlighted in...
