To add to that, (or maybe you said this, forgive me if so I am sick RN and my brain is not working optimally), there's no such thing as a trusted network, and many ways to trick devices into connecting. Evil twins are clones of nearby networks that you will connect to instead. There's also an attack where your device is actively sending out requests to connect to saved networks, and an attacker can simply respond to that request to get you to connect, and authenticate regardless of what password you send.
Yeah, you don't have to dig very deep to find out how insecure our networks are. Mac addresses can be spoofed, ports can be scanned, TCP numbers can be guessed, etc...
Most mobile devices these days default to using a random spoofed MAC, so I have a hard time seeing how that's effective unless it's done as a whitelist only.
WiFi pineapples are fun that way. I've taken one out on a drive going to our cabin in scanning mode and picked up 100+ different SSIDs along the way. It can also respond as a wildcard to any request that comes by or just be obnoxious and advertise them all at one.
Never setting an 'auto connect' for unsecured WiFi is a must in that case. Secured not so much an issue unless the interceptor has the key for the network at least.
A wild tankie appears and minimizes China's surveillance state. Hey there you, have any Chinese immigrant friends? Did you know they are survielled and harassed around the world by the Chinese govenment? Your leaders will always fail you, mine too. I'm not gonna sit here in denial about it.
Maybe for app banking app (and even...), it could be understanding but for instagram, NEVER! Even for security reason... Bro they don't care about anything on their network, allow soft porn and all that kind of stuff. And after all of that they are going to come to say that it is for security reasons 😂 Stay on the "libre" web, Lemmy is a great start! 👌
i mean, unless the bank already knows what you look like or could cross reference with an existing id photo, i cant see how it would be any more secure.
Is there anything with Japanese? It's the language I've been learning (I took a class and have been wanting to study it further), but not all language learning apps have it.
I find it weird how any discussion about Signal will inevitably have a bunch of people piling on dismissing any criticisms of it. Believing that Signal is perfect has become like a religion at this point. Whatever people might think of Telegram is completely irrelevant when it comes to the question of whether Signal is actually a secure tool or not.
The fact that people working on Signal have direct ties to US intelligence agencies cannot be ignored. No can the fact that Signal is a centralized system based in US. These two things alone should make everybody very concerned.
I think a huge part of this "enshittification" thing is that companies have finally realized that normies for fucking real don't care what specialists say, like at all, in no situation they care. Between a cryptographer with an ugly photo and a cryptobro with a nice photo they'll listen to the latter.
10 years ago it was more of a compromise, now they realized that you can roll out something as "secure" as OSCAR over TLS to the server and say it's secure and the absolute majority will just believe it if the advertising is good enough, no matter what specialists squeal.
So now people compare Signal to Telegram as if these were comparable.
It really sucks. Such a descent into stupidity and centralism together with AI poisoning just can't avoid making our world more dystopian and genocidal.
The PM of China has nothing to fucking do with Mark Lizardman Zuckerberg wanting your data, please shut the fuck up if you're going to be verifiably ignorant
