I can't help but think that if this sort of thing proliferates that it will essentially hamstring reviews. This particular agreement might be just because the game is in alpha, but it's part of a broader trend of ToS/EULA wishlists that are so restrictive that they're probably illegal already buy in order to test that you have to go to court against a huge, overpaid legal team which leads to people having their basic rights violated.

reverendsteveii ,

which tv manufacturer was it that updated their eula and if you didn't agree it bricked your tv?

reverendsteveii ,

even then, it's essentially paywalling your rights. you need to go to court, wait for the matter to be adjudicated, hope it works out in your favor, run out any potential appeals, all while paying attorneys and not being able to do something you're legally entitled to do. If you can't do all that, then your rights are moot.

not my experience at all across 3 separate companies. Ime senior engineers are the highest level that still spends most of the day heads down most days, and that's why I'm gonna stick it out at this level as long as I can.

After announcing increased prices, Spotify to Pay Songwriters About $150 Million Less Next Year ( www.billboard.com )

When Bloomberg reported that Spotify would be upping the cost of its premium subscription from $9.99 to $10.99, and including 15 hours of audiobooks per month in the U.S., the change sounded like a win for songwriters and publishers. Higher subscription prices typically equate to a bump in U.S. mechanical royalties — but not...

This doesn't reflect my housemate's experience in Italy at all. Evidently if they detect an American accent in your "buongiorno" they'll just spend the rest of the day mocking you in Italian and occasionally just yelling "DONALD TRUMP HAMBURGER TRANSGENDER" at you.

who picks what habits are good and what are bad? who decides what happens to data beyond this? can you going to mcdonalds twice a day be shared with your health insurer? can you going to that rally be shared with the local police? with your landlord? are you comfortable with everyone knowing everything? because there's two things you do with data: analyze, and sell.

How come liberals dont hate conservatives the way conservatives hate liberals

I constantly see angry mobs of people decrying "woke", "critical race theory", ""grooming"", and whatever other nonsense they made up this week. They march around with guns, constantly appending lib as a prefix to any word they can use to denigrate. They actively plot violence and spew hatred in the open....

I mean, suiciding the guy who flat out told his friends "If I commit suicide no I didn't" shows that agent 747 was due to update his techniques and understanding.

reverendsteveii ,

Okay, but in the interest of not pretending that They Would Never(tm) can we all agree that if a THIRD whistleblower dies shortly before or during testimony that maybe something is happening here? You have the guy who committed suicide in the middle of depositions after telling his friend "If I commit suicide, no I absolutely did not" and now the healthy 45 year old who all of a sudden has multiple infections and a stroke. Is there a point at which you'd accept the idea that it's a bit beyond coincidence that the deadliest place in the world seems to be the witness stand at a trial where Boeing is the defendant?

reverendsteveii ,

I'm just trying to establish conditions by which we all might agree that this is worth looking into before they happen. It's easy to try to play connect the dots with the stars, there are a bunch of them already and you can just ignore the ones that don't make the picture you want. I'm trying to add predictions to this theory in the name of the scientific method - if another whistleblower dies before his testimony is complete, that will be beyond what I can dismiss as coincidence.

Here's another question along the same lines - my friend when I was a kid developed gynecomastia, commonly known as "breast knots" when he was 14. They're completely harmless, but they made it look like he had boobs. Cute little A cups on this otherwise very boy-presenting person. For some reason, no one thought it was "against God's plan" or "mutilating his body" or "part of the gender agenda" when this 14 year old boy had a purely cosmetic double mastectomy. I wonder why no one batted an eye at a child receiving gender-affirming cosmetic surgery just because he wanted to in this particular case.

I feel like the Steam Deck is the best proof of Gabe Newell's quote that "piracy is a service issue."

They could have easily crammed the Steam Deck full of stuff to make it hard to use for piracy - locking down everything, making it usable only to play games you legitimately own, force you to go through who knows what hoops in order to play games on it. That's what Nintendo or Apple or most other companies do....

reverendsteveii ,

The steam deck is how you prevent piracy. If you look at the huge influx of streaming services, you'll see an example of how you encourage piracy. I recently dropped three of my services in favor of one pirate site that has almost everything. They even offer a subscription tier and I've considered it. I'm willing to pay for good content. What I'm not willing to do is pay dozens of middlemen across multiple companies to rip off the people who actually make my favorite shows and then memory hole the shows a few months after they premiere.

how long have you been a web developer? Because I've been doing it for six years and almost every web app I've ever seen uses http with TLS to send the plaintext password to the backend, where it's popped into a request var at the controller level, then passed as an instance var to the service level, salted, hashed and stored. This includes apps that have to submit themselves for HIPAA compliance because they deal with PHI.

Spoilers ahoy. If you've not seen game of thrones, read on to get the disappointment out of the way now

I disagree wholeheartedly. As much as "who's got a better story than bran" sucked, I think that was likely the ending that was intended in the books as well (and the extreme backlash against it is why we'll never see the last books). GRRM stated on multiple occasions that he was working closely with HBO and that they knew the general shape of the story he was trying to tell.

I feel like the majority of the problem with GoT was Benioff and Weiss. GRRM wanted at least two more seasons in which to tell the story (and, knowing what we know now, to delay the revelation that he didn't really have a way to untangle the story he tangled), HBO made it clear that they would keep riding the money train no matter how far the station, but D&D wanted to wrap the series up ASAP so they could work on producing some Star Wars films. That's why Jon goes from Dragonstone to the wall in a single cut. That's why the entire war with the nights king that was central to the whole series was over in an episode. That's why Dani went psycho in her moment of victory. That's why cersei's death was so predictable that it's a cliche in ttrpgs, that's why cleganebowl was ultimately disappointing, that's why the resolution to dragons being in westeros was "idk he just left lol", that's why the resolution to aryas story was "idk she just left lol" (even after several seasons developing her character as someone who believes that if Starks don't stick together they'll be destroyed), that's why the resolution to the war in the north was "idk the north...won? but also surrendered? lol", that's why LRJ didn't matter at all, that's why the spider went from being the most politically adroit character on the show to doing a whole musical number entitled "Do You Wanna Do A Treason?", that's why littlefinger's whole trial was "we know he's a dick just kill him", and the fact that House of the Dragon is being made by people who want to make it is why its almost as good as the first 5 seasons of GoT

It all comes down to the fact that they wanted the show to just be over, and now it is I suppose.

California gets trotted out in the conservative media sphere as "liberalism run wild", a place where being what they consider to be a "real American" is illegal but crime is subsidized by the state, where everything is expensive and dangerous, and homeless people have gay sex in the street. There's an entire industry focused on filtering for the most extremely awful news they can find in a state of almost 40 million people, packaging that news as though it's the typical experience everyone there goes through, and then blasting that news into the brains of Americans 24/7. That image, carefully crafted to be as extremely negative as possible, is the only experience most people have with California.
