TIL about Roko's Basilisk, a thought experiment considered by some to be an "information hazard" - a concept or idea that can cause you harm by you simply knowing/understanding it ( en.wikipedia.org )

Roko's basilisk is a thought experiment which states that an otherwise benevolent artificial superintelligence (AI) in the future would be incentivized to create a virtual reality simulation to torture anyone who knew of its potential existence but did not directly contribute to its advancement or development, in order to...

I'm dismissing it right now. I'm finding it quite easy to do so.

That's because there are a LOT of tankies on lemmy, specifically lemmy.ml. In many threads anything slightly critical of Russia or China will get deleted and the users banned. It may have other meanings but that's what it means here: people carrying water for authoritarian regimes while LARPing as leftists.

CEO of Google Says It Has No Solution for Its AI Providing Wildly Incorrect Information ( futurism.com )

You know how Google's new feature called AI Overviews is prone to spitting out wildly incorrect answers to search queries? In one instance, AI Overviews told a user to use glue on pizza to make sure the cheese won't slide off (pssst...please don't do this.)...

I actually was talking to a neighbor at my apartments 20 some-odd years ago. We got to talking about coke and he asked if I'd ever smoked it before.

"No..." So I followed him across the hall to his apartment and took a hit. "Whoa, this is fucking great! ...Wait, when you smoke it isn't it crack?"

"Yeah, it's awesome isn't it!? You know, if you want more I can probably find some..."

So, yup. I got my first hit of crack for free. I never thought that happened in real life before, either, and I've never had or heard of it happening since. Additionally, about six months later I stopped smoking crack.

I hate dogs and would hate to be in an Air BNB where there was a dog about. But fuck yes, Kevin, if you're lonely you still deserve to be treated well. Let's go to bed, Kevin.

This person will obviously never be professional. How many others you work with are also traumatized by those videos but don't say anything, I wonder. Get this scumbag fired for your coworkers if you won't do it for yourself.

Unfortunately I'm seeing far too often younger people think that having a single beer makes you an alcoholic.

Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads ( www.lowpass.cc )
