All of the Amcrest "management" I do is within blue iris. I have a ptz IP4M-1041B but do not do any ptz stuff via HA. I use blue iris to send stream/alerts to HA via MQTT. This allows me to do notifications on motion. I would assume if you have location presets setup in BI you could call them from HA but that's a guess.

I messed around with presets (camera location) in blue iris a bit bit didn't have a real use case for it so I am not sure how robust it is.

I block internet access to all Amcrest cameras directly but can still access their local IP. I have access to my cameras again via blue iris which runs on a dedicated windows machine.

dmtalon ,

I'm not sure if I've tried doing any PTZ stuff, but all the other settings for sure. The cameras I have all have SD cards so you could manage everything right from the UI and just have it record locally.

They want to connect to the mothership and destroy log files trying to get there.

Been using enbrighten switches from Jasco. I use their Zwave but I think they have ZigBee too.

I use the ones that look like toggle switches over the paddle style to match the rest of the house .

I have them on all our bathroom fans too so they can be left on (steam / smell disposal) and auto shut off after 30 min.

dmtalon ,

I had a humidity switch in ours a while ago (not smart) and it would turn on too much even if a shower wasn't running but our windows were open. And, enough humidity was in the air. So that didn't work out great.

It was a self contained deal not a smart switch though

Generally an Unpopular opinion, but I think this should include creator ads (or at least an option per creator to support them by turning on their own ads).

Defaulted to off , I don't want to watch a random videos AG1 ad. That said there are a couple creators I watch I would be willing to enable theirs strictly to support them.

Because if I'm paying for ad removal it should be complete ad removal.

dmtalon ,

Ya, just an infrastructure where their ads have to go into blocks within the video (inserted wherever but tagged as such)

I was more aminable when I was paying $14.99 for YT Red Family plan. At $23/mo it's pretty expensive and I want new features/controls for that money

dmtalon ,

Its crazy how much further ahead Europe is in Privacy Protection.

All these companies need to be held responsible for what they do with our data, and what it costs them when they lose control of it. Either figure out how to safe guard it or suffer painful consequences. Or perhaps only store what's necessary for us to interact.

A PR disaster: Microsoft has lost trust with its users, and Windows Recall is the straw that broke the camel's back ( www.windowscentral.com )

It's a nightmare scenario for Microsoft. The headlining feature of its new Copilot+ PC initiative, which is supposed to drive millions of PC sales over the next couple of years, is under significant fire for being what many say is a major breach of privacy and security on Windows. That feature in question is Windows Recall, a...

dmtalon ,

Ya, a PR nightmare for the next 15 minutes until the next unbelievable thing comes along and the ADD nature of people forgets windows is watching everything they do.

dmtalon ,

I believe the biggest thing that will hurt MS is moving to subscription. The vast majority of users aren't gonna wanna have a forever fee when they buy a laptop/PC

dmtalon ,

For now at least, I block as much telemetry at the network level (DNS level) using pihole.

Annoys my wife and kid at times. I try to explain why and what it means but convenience is king unfortunately.

dmtalon ,

That's cool!

dmtalon ,

Latest thing I noticed is at least with the home devices you can no longer get who/what band is playing.

It only tells you the song name. The band/artist is the primary reason I ask, not the song title.

dmtalon ,

Crazy random crap breaking!

dmtalon ,

I've got amcrest and I integrate them into HA via mqtt using blue iris.

But amcrest cameras need something like pihole to help block all their taking to the home base

dmtalon ,

I can tell you why I do. I watch more YT than anything else (on my TV), and don't want to watch ads, or play cat and mouse games trying to prevent them. I also listen to a lot of music, and use YT Music. I pay for the family plan, since we all listen to music, and my son and I watch a lot of YT (very different videos on YT however :) )

I get, there's a growing group of people that think everything should be free, but I'm OK paying for something I use a lot, to remove ads. There should, however be more controls for paid users, like controlling whether or not you see creator ads, shorts, etc...

dmtalon ,

There are android apps (I could side load) on my Nvidia shield, but like I said I don't mind paying for something I use , and use a lot.

dmtalon ,

Ya, my TV is actually 'smart' but I use the Nvidia shield through an AV receiver which feeds 5.1 speakers and the TV.

dmtalon , (edited )

Ya, all you have to do is install something different on every device you own/watch YouTube on.

You also, have to be technical enough to side load, or compile revanced etc... I've heard over and over that ubo keeps having updates/changes to keep yt ads down.

I actually am technical enough to do those things, but both doing and managing these various apps across multiple devices in my house is a lot of work. Or, I can just pay for the music and TV I watch.

For the record, I also have and paid for GrayJay app on my phone and do also use it on occasion. We have used smart tube TV in the past because when my son was younger Google had shit parental controls and we couldn't allow his child account to access regular yt (restricted). I've got it side loaded on both our Nvidia shield and gtv devices. Too bad it doesn't work on android TV, or my wife/sons iPhones.

dmtalon ,

I just 'deactivate' people that share news on facebook. I use FB to give my family (who don't live near me) and friends a small slice of what's going on in my world. I don't post daily/weekly but I only post stuff I create. I also use it for groups/market place since most forums went to FB groups.

I expect the same from my connections, and unfollow anyone that just forwards things (news, memes, other posts). This little bit of management has made my FB feed 'ok'

dmtalon ,

From all the reports I've seen so far, they are in fact not attacking humans, just the boats. Unless this has changed.

dmtalon , (edited )

Well I'm interested in this world (sailing/ living on a sailboat) so I've been following fairly close. I don't believe there's any known non aggressive way to stop them. Stopping hasn't been shown to help that I've heard/seen

dmtalon ,

Did it this last cycle. Didn't renew, don't miss it. In fact the announcement of adding more ads into the video service I didn't want, but had to pay for to get prime lead to me just leaving.

dmtalon ,

I think you're one step too high...

Humans seem to thrive being controlled by authoritarian figures. If you look across the planet these people are getting voted in by someone.

The first one was God.

dmtalon ,

Smells like another test that'll end in a year or so leaving the Tablet to rot.

I still have one actively used Nexus 7 in my house. Used as a weather station display on our countertop.

Probably wouldn't buy another Google tablet until it was well established a generation or two in. Certainly know better than to early adopt anything they put out.

dmtalon ,

Sounds like this would at the very least remove $20-30m in revenue (according to the article) not counting if the copyright holders decide to go after them.

I think it puts them in a precarious situation overall.

3d printed threads in TPU

I am woking on making solar panel mounts for the roof rack of my nissan xterra from TPU, since it can take a beating. Does any one have any experience with 3d-printed TPU threads? And how much stress before it can take before a bolt rips out? Also should i use teflon thread seal so the a bolt won't come loose?

dmtalon ,

I made flat head bolts out of pteg for solar panel mounted to my sailboat and while towing it to the lake they ripped out :( (and I lost the panel)

I made the bolt head like a flat washer so I could glue it to the boat then set the panel on it and secured it with a pteg nut.

dmtalon ,

The pteg failed (sheered off near the "head" of the bolt/stud. The flat washer like heads were all still attached.

I had to replace the panel, and just went with SS screws right into the fiberglass. I also tape the leading edge during transport.

I'm guessing air got up under the front lip and just poof off it came. In my case these were fairly small which I'm sure didn't help my case.
