To be fair, this was the case in my secular(-ish) public school as well and I believe it was there until the early 2000s. The catholic church has many sins (which Squid did a great job laying out above), but I don't think they, as a group, endorse the concept of corporal punishment like they do with anti-choice practices or the rampant pedophilia. That's a cultural issue with certain regions of the US.

I did not know about this feature. Thank you!

alilbee ,

Do you say this about all QoL updates? I'm not going to use this and also think Google sucks in general, but this is such a benign, optional little feature for people who might find it more convenient. Isn't that what development should be all about?

alilbee ,

I agree with you, and yet... It's winning them elections. We can be upset about it all we want, but it's increasingly clear that bigotry and xenophobia are winning arguments in this era. We're fucked if we don't adjust. I'm not proposing we abandon migrants, but the one thing myself and the person you replied to likely agree on is that the left is increasingly losing sight of home and the average citizen, not in terms of rhetoric but in effect. We're about to lose the EU and possibly lose support for Ukraine, see even more immigration restrictions, and see an empowered global far-right. The voters are telling us they have different priorities, which we need to focus on in a more altruistic way than the right. We have to be introspective here if we ever want to accomplish our goals.

alilbee ,

... or don't introspect, blame the voters, and lose forever. It could not matter less what is true, it's only what the populace believes. That's politics. If our ideology can't stand up to this, it must adjust or it deserves to fail.

alilbee ,

Completely agreed. It's the difference between your political views being an excuse for you to feel morally validated or being a mechanism to improve lives. If it's the latter, it's time to get to work. We're failing and thus losing our ability to do what we stated. If it's people being idiots, educate them. If it's people being lied to, reach them. Regardless, we live in a democracy and the entire point is that the people get to choose and the people are rejecting us. We cannot fail to heed those cries.

We must create an inspiring vision that resonates with voters and alleviates their concerns. The stats clearly show people are concerned about immigration and the economy. The right has a cruel, but effective approach in just stopping immigration entirely and many, many people think that is a good idea right now. What is our better answer? I'm no expert and I don't know, but that is in and of itself a serious problem. Why do I not have a Meloni I can point to as the beacon of my ideology, that has at least some of the answers?

[Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism?

Seen a lot of posts on Lemmy with vegan-adjacent sentiments but the comments are typically very critical of vegan ideas, even when they don't come from vegans themselves. Why is this topic in particular so polarising on the internet? Especially since unlike politics for example, it seems like people don't really get upset by it...

alilbee ,

Oh, oh! I have a more recent example of a cringy militant atheist now, do you need a link? Here ya go.

alilbee ,

I agree with this in principle (and I know it's just a meme and I'm taking it too seriously) but how do we still allow for people who take pride in their trade or craft, even if the majority value has been stolen by a megacorp? I work for one of those huge soulless corps. Sometimes, every once in a great while, I enjoy working on something I've built. I'll put in more hours than I have to just because I'm having a good time or whatever. I guess that's still separate from the "being on my grindset" culture of doing that all the time though.

Idk, thinking out loud here.

alilbee ,

I'm in the same boat. Hell, sometimes I can even get into the groove on something useless. It's more for me though, not for my employer. Wouldn't the "grindset" people say the same though?

alilbee ,

I'm not disputing that, but the meme kinda is? I guess what I'm getting at is asking where the line is between gross overwork grind culture and taking pride in your work and possibly working a bit more as an investment in that regard. Other people have had some good thoughts here. I think it's just about watching yourself and your motivations for working to ensure you haven't fallen into the trap.

alilbee ,

Define "BLM", "protests", and "success" because any combination of different variables produces a different result. Additionally, even then, there is a lot of nuance to being successful when it comes to political movements.

The protests undoubtedly brought more attention to policing and racial issues in general. They obviously didn't solve either problem. Some states passed progressive policing laws, some regressed out of spite or in reacting to the other states.

Then you also have the category of "well, it might have made an impact on this but we'll never know". For instance, does Biden win in 2020 without the Black Lives Matter protests? No idea, and nobody truly does or even can. That would be an enormous impact on many things, some of which may not even have been goals of the protests.

alilbee ,

Lemmy has a much, much, much better crowd than reddit, but it definitely still got the "not all men", "I only ever comment on stories about extremely rare false rape accusations" crowd.

alilbee ,

Not arguing either way, but I'd love to see the stats! Are you a proponent of nuclear energy as a piece of the solution, or would you rather see renewables used entirely instead?
