Hell the high power WiFi equipment^‡^ I installed at my Grandma's house had warnings about keeping a few feet clear of it when powered on due to health concerns and that's just WiFi equipment. I can't imagine the dosage of gnarly from a 2m powered dish.

‡ I installed that equipment because she wanted WiFi on all 10 acres of her property and she didn't want me to install more stations around her property. Now she has the broadcast equipment in her garage with a tape line on the floor like it's a Goddamned radiation research facility lol

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

It's a small farm and yeah it's Ubiquiti hardware though I don't think they sell it anymore. The last time I looked through their website I couldn't find it again.

Though here's the Amazon link

Basically this thing is located on one end of the property and on the other end there's a nano station hooked up to a router because there was still a WiFi dead zone that she wanted covered. But given that that spot was inside a metal barn on the otherside of another metal barn I wasn't surprised.

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

It works great

Literally able to us the WiFi in a metal barn 50 yards away on the otherside of a garage

It doesn't faff about

Mowing the field at her place my phone will stay connected to the WiFi basically the whole time, the only WiFi blind spot that I had to fix was on the far side of her property where there's 2 metal barns, a garage, and a wall of her house between you and the broadcast equipment.

I'd so much love for webp support to increase

It's so much better than sending jpegs to people

Supreme Court strikes down Chevron, curtailing power of federal agencies ( www.scotusblog.com )

This sucks. This is leaning further into the Major Questions Doctrine that SCOTUS has been pushing, where agencies and their actually knowledgeable, employed scientists and technical experts, have no real control over regulatory policies, and instead are beholden to Congress and judges to decide e.g. how many ppm of a chemical...

Trains-but-worse

Oh boy I love trains-but-worse, their my favorite kind of trains

Seriously why not trains-but-good?

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

The fact that it's Japan (a place with a damn good rep for trains) planning to make a giant conveyor system between 2 cities rather than a freight line is what's so shocking to me.

They're going to have to clear a lot of stuff for a big conveyor system why not do it properly and go with freight trains?

Trains are a tried and true method of moving freight, they have a bunch of skilled engineers already versed in trains, they have all the necessary industry for getting the parts for those trains built, etc, etc. This just screams stupid AF and wasteful AF to me.

I see you stopped reading my comment there.

I listed some reasons in the comment literally right after that.

Microsoft has gone too far: including a Game Pass ad in the Settings app ushers in a whole new age of ridiculous over-advertising ( www.techradar.com )

Windows 11 is getting out of hand with its push for advertisments, frankly - remember the recent full-screen pop-up to persuade users to install Edge or other Microsoft services? Then another advertisment was placed in the Start menu, and now Microsoft has finally worn my temper thin - with a new Game Pass ad coming to the...

I second Linux Mint

I installed it on my Grandma's PCs not too long ago and even she enjoys it. She's almost 80.

We are having issues with her printer but it's one that has known issues with Linux in general (it's a fancy Epson laser printer, scanner, fax machine combo with bad Windows support) but I'm hoping to rectify that soon.

I would say the GUI reminds me more of Windows 7 than 10 which I really dig

Edit: spleling

Funnily enough my phone corrected it to Lazer when I typed laser the first time

Just another fun quirk of the Google keyboard on Android lately, autocorrecting words to the incorrect spelling

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Oh yeah it was a typo but it was autocorrected weird, the keyboard on my phone has definitely been making some odd choices for corrections lately.

At least it's better than search results via Google, those have gone to shit lately

Don't give Apple any ideas

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Holy shit you weren't joking!

Given Apple's track record for allowing people to repair their devices this would have been a nightmare product

Especially electric ones.

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Depends on how much recoil you get from each shot and how many shots you get before you have to reload

Short bursts towards center of mass is best. You might not hit a head, hitting extremities is basically worthless for dropping a combatant, center of mass is where all the really important stuff is concentrated.

The benefits of growing up around ex military is that you get trained by them as a child

And the more they kill the more the reputation grows

Like when stadia was announced my friends and I took bets on how long it would last or if any stadia exclusive games would ever get to launch

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Honestly yeah that probably would have been the case

But if they were open about it then it probably would have gone over poorly with the shareholders and stock value by "openly planning to fail"

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Provided that's even how they work

But what they hell do I know, I drive a forklift for a living not do science things with other science people at the science place

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I can literally build a Jenga tower with standard size Jenga blocks using a forklift (we have little competitions every so often)(unfortunately I can't show pics or videos otherwise it'd be a security incident)

I got that shit on lock

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

And of course there's the sheer awesome factor of if it turns out to be the case

Could you imagine being the dude who makes that discovery? Prepare to have shit named after you for centuries

Being able to schedule a doctor's appointment for anytime during a 24 hour period has been such a massive breath of fresh air for me (also neurodivergent)

It's hard enough for normal appointments but scheduling a doctor's appointment is especially difficult

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Both with fog and smoke

It's so eery with fog and a special kind of horrifying with smoke

Story Time

When the fog gets so thick you can't see more than a car length or 2 in front and behind

You continue to slow down trying to find a safe speed

The last car you saw was an hour ago and they were pulled over and walking around

You pull over, turn the car off, and turn the hazard lights on

You step out of the car to listen

There's only silence

A suffocating silence

You scream only for it to sound muffled muted

A car flys past at speed and disappears before you can get a good look

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

You really shouldn't be raw dogging the Internet

Gormadt ,

Because if you live in an apartment your only option for charging is to go to a charging location. You can't just plug it in overnight.

Which I can see as a big hurdle for a lot of people.

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

And I'm not sure about your apartments but at mine (and many others in my area) we can't have anything hanging out of our windows unless it's an AC

If I tried an extension cord it'd be a violation of my lease

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Had the same problem at my apartment, my workaround was putting the blinds back and putting my blackout curtains behind the blinds (because putting them between the blinds and the window made them upset too)

At least my apartment is wired mostly properly. Still have things on breakers that don't make sense though.

Re-Enabling the dislike button would help too

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

That's not why it was removed

It was removed not long after one of their Rewind vids was disliked to hell.

And it ain't coming back, at least they haven't so much as hinted at it

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Because of it being so closed off I've hopped instances

And honestly I'm probably going to hop again because having down votes disabled isn't very good IMO

Edit: 1 big thing though that I wish existed Lemmy wide would be if you have a comment or post removed (hell even bans) you get a message to your inbox. As it currently stands it just happens and unless you check mod logs you'll never know.

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Sounds like you picked the wrong instance for an alt account

I'd say if you pick one that isn't federated with Hexbear, some specific domains ending in .ml, and some of the other conservative ones you'll have a far better time around the fediverse.

Also don't be afraid to block people

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

It's pretty chill in general and is well moderated

It's has the occasional instability day here and there but it gets sorted out pretty quick

They don't federate down votes and you can't give them out which IMO isn't the best

But I'd say it's a nice place overall

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Specific instances are hard to find which is usually why I flex the block tool a lot around here. Blocking them when they start spewing their bullshit.

I can't think of any off the top of my head but I'd check the federated list of instances for some of the instances you see with large queer communities (like the one I'm posting from now) to get a general idea as us queer folk get hella targeted by conservatives online.

USBs nowadays are a dime a dozen basically for 16GB sticks

They can literally be bought in 10 packs for less than $30.

If they don't give one back nowadays so be it.

Back in the day it was a terrible loss though

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I had to look into it because once you mentioned that I was curious.

So the saying originated sometime before 1930 when it first appeared in print and likely in the 1800s. (Source)

And when I went to an inflation calculator the earliest date I could select was January of 1913. Which I couldn't help but share the results of.

About $3.20.

Source

So yeah, about a dime a dozen... 111 years ago lol.

Especially stuff that's really important

Edit: or is that just me? Though it has gotten easier since getting a diagnosis and developing strategies to deal with my ADHD.

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Getting the diagnosis could open up treatment options for ADHD that could make dealing with other aspects of life easier overall

Gormadt ,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I've used mine for a lot of stuff really

Weaken adhesive for opening a cell phone (like your picture)

Revive a Nexus 5X long enough to patch it and transfer the data off of it (a really frustrating process BTW)

Heat treat resin prints (place print in box, set box on bed, set bed to 80C, come back in an hour, turn bed off, wait for it to hit ambient, remove box) this process is great for hollowed prints as not only will it cause and trapped alcohol to evaporate out but it will further cure the part and increase the durability of the part as well (CNC Kitchen has a great vid on it)

Keep my coffee warm while I was building and setting up a NAS for a friend

@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

It was a very long day that started with a nice easy plan that quickly turned into "Which POS part is preventing this thing from working"

Fun fact it was the motherboard. Though it wasn't a consistent issue sometimes it was RAM failing, sometimes it was pcie not working, sometimes it was networking not working, etc. After swapping the motherboard everything worked beautifully.

Yes we tried reseating the CPU, yes we checked for bent pins, yes we made sure the cables were secure. Something was fucky with the motherboard.
