Project Hail Mary is fucking good. Someone online, maybe here, maybe elsewhere, said it was boring. Idk how someone thought that. I’m enjoying this book thoroughly. @bookstodon

Thanks for the review. I've been delaying and pushing back, adding "Project Hail Mary" to my want to read list. It goes on that list today.

@sbattey @bookstodon Fully agree. I loved Project Hail Mary. I also saw the negative review and was baffled.

This is the most interesting book I've read in a long time, notwithstanding that I also feel punched in the gut.

Somewhere between “Flowers For Algernon”, “Of Mice And Men” and “Eleanor Oliphant”, a Japanese novel about childhood that might have you in tears.

@negative12dollarbill @bookstodon oh my goodness, this does sound like an emotional gut-punch. Reminds me a little of Heaven, by Mieko Kawakami, which was a terrifying glimpse of bullying in Japanese schools.

Is it too soon to Covid times from 2020 in a fictional story? I’m thinking about including that as one of the plots in an upcoming book. @bookstodon @mastodonbooks

“There is safety in reserve, but no attraction. One cannot love a reserved person.”

(Response: See, I don't buy this. Mr. Lisa is a reserved person but full of passion underneath. Wasn't Darcy reserved and Elizabeth still loved him?)

@bookstodon

ta_fleur ,

@beexcessivelydiverting @bookstodon this makes me think of Anne Elliott telling Mrs. Smith that She doesn't believe Mr. Elliott can be trusted - because He always says the right thing, and is consistently agreeable and never offends anyone.

ta_fleur ,

@beexcessivelydiverting @bookstodon when Elizabeth's aunt writes and says how much She really likes Darcy- it dawned on me what perfect complements They are for each other. and when Elizabeth shuts down Lady Catherine- it became certain. but just now, i was thinking of the real point. Lady Catherine and Mr. Collins are blind. because Their hearts are closed. and the promise of prodigious joy for Darcy and Elizabeth- is exactly because Their hearts are open. reserved is really closed, isn't it?

At the store and came across a pretty discounted hardcover copy of "Demon Copperhead" by Barbara Kingsolver. It is worth purchasing a physical copy? I usually try to stick to library books and purchase books I really like, but the library wait list is long and the price is tempting.

About to travel and was looking for something good to read.

Just finished Eileen by Ottessa Moshfegh and as the other books she'l has written that I already read it's amazing.

All the trigger warnings, and it contains all the different sparks of glittery darkness, lonely people that happen to be born under the wrong circumstances in the wrong environments.

My is brief/won't spoil, to spread good, great, & spectacular far & wide.

THE TRUEST SENSE showcases Laura Keating's unique & deftly scary stories: some sneak up quietly- some gleefully go full-throttle into nightmares- but all 15 tales are atmospheric & vivid, with an aura of permeating horror that provides an imaginative, satisfying journey into the Weird.

@MagentaRocks @bookstodon Many thanks for linking that eye-opening article! I'm a big e-book borrower and knew that libraries pay more than the standard commercial price — but I had no idea how bad it really is. Plus, I've run into "piracy" complaints about the Internet Archive before and now know that's basically untrue trash talk.

Many thanks for sharing this. Happy to boost.

Five of the best books about maths

Since the Egyptian scribe Ahmes put pen to papyrus some time around 1550BC to explain how to calculate the slope of a pyramid, we’ve had over three millennia of maths literature. So within some level of statistical confidence: here are a subset of the best ever maths books.

Shot in the dark: can anyone recommend a graphic novel or middle grade to YA book about Yasuke, also known as the African Samurai?

Also, it has to be a paperback. No hardcovers, movies, audiobooks, tv series, or e-books.

Fiction or non-fiction are both okay.

Thanks!

@D_J_Nathanson @bookstodon I only know of the one book, and I can't personally recommend for or against it.

I only read of him growing up, but until that Netflix Anime, never heard of him again.

@D_J_Nathanson @bookstodon My hometown in Massachusetts has a sister city in Japan, and we were gifted a Katana from Manjiro's family for rescuing him when he was 14 on a whaling hunt in the Pacific.

I became obsessed as a child and read up on a lot. I never did read that book on Yasuke, though.

Also, to anyone who has parents that are incompetent mosters (Incompemonsters TM) and need YOU to fix THEIR problems 😂
