Is it too soon to Covid times from 2020 in a fictional story? I’m thinking about including that as one of the plots in an upcoming book. @bookstodon @mastodonbooks

Jennifer ,

@golgaloth @fskornia @dickrubin716 @bookstodon I have zero desire to read fiction about that!!

Happy !
(I still haven't decided if I agree with this theory- I need to watch this again, either way- but I have zero problem with it and it DOES make a lot of sense...)

@horror @horrorfilm

Jennifer ,

@KentuckyConjurer @stina_marie @horror @horrorfilm nah they're just goofy buddies. I have watched it a million times. But yeah if people want to think of them as a couple that's fine with me!

Since we are coming up on June, it seems like a good time to check in with everyone here on @bookstodon regarding favorite reads of 2024 so far. Whatcha got?

My top five reads of 2024 so far:

The Criminal series of graphic novels by Ed Brubaker (ten primary works)

James, Percival Everett

The Book of Love, Kelly Link

Poor Deer, Claire Oshetsky

Prequel, Rachel Maddow

Jennifer ,

@jda @kimlockhartga @bookstodon ooh that's on my list, good to know! I loved American Fiction!

Jennifer ,

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon I feel like I've read a lot of fluff so far this year. Not many I just really loved. One series someone here told me about that I did really enjoy is Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Fairies and Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands. Really creative and fun fantasy. I also finally finished Dune 30+ years after first picking it up, and I liked it!

Jennifer ,

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon the Broken Earth trilogy is phenomenal!! I loved it! I haven't heard of Midnight Robber, it sounds great, thanks for the tip!

Jennifer ,

@fskornia @willelm @jda @kimlockhartga @bookstodon I loved Centennial! I read it when I was a teenager, then there was a TV miniseries about it.

Jennifer ,

@willelm @kimlockhartga @bookstodon I read Yellowface last year. The main character was so absolutely awful I had a hard time enjoying it 😬 Her book Babel is amazing

Anyone else finding Mastodon very slow to load sometimes? Do you know what causes it?

I’m using the ‘Ice Cubes’ iOS app, not sure if it’s that.

Or could it be the instance I’m on? Could that would make any difference?

My internet is pretty fast: 840 Mbps download / 100 Mbps upload (tested this just now via the same device I’m having issues with Mastodon on).

@actuallyautistic

Jennifer ,

@n69n @AnAutieAtUni @actuallyautistic I use Tusky and haven't had any problems.

So the RWA has filed for bankruptcy, and chooses to blame it on Courtney Milan and the "woke push" for DEI.

You knew I would rant about that, yes?

https://herhandsmyhands.wordpress.com/2024/05/30/rwa-goes-bankrupt-its-not-dei-its-the-bigotry-and-racism/

Jennifer ,

@herhandsmyhands @romancelandia @bookstodon I don't read romance but heard about that a couple years ago and read Courtney Milan's Twitter posts about it. It's really sad the leadership of that group were so clueless

@plink @palestine @israel he evidently didn't bother to read the ICC statement. It didn't use the word genocide. I did read it, and it sounded pretty straightforward and accurate to me.

I sometimes thought my father thought he could't die while he still had books on his pending pile (a stab at immortality I seem to be replicating)... so, it was strangely touching to see Tom Gauld has had similar thoughts.

    Something I apparently need to declare in public today:

    I have a strong negative reaction to people plucking actual persons from history and writing fictional stories about them. I can enjoy it if the person lived long ago and the story could plausibly fit in their actual history (so most of Doctor Who doesn't count), but the recently dead or (cringe) still living? No.

    My suspension of disbelief crashes down.

    Be creative. Make up someone.

    @bookstodon

    Jennifer ,

    @eyrea @bookstodon I generally agree. The only exception I can think of that I actually like isn't a book but the TV show For All Mankind, alternate history about the US space program (and one of the best TV shows ever IMO). Most of the characters in it are fictional, but Deke Slayton is included and he was a Mercury astronaut. Since it's alternate history it works.

    Idea:

    Bookstores should group fantasy with horror instead of scifi. Both fantasy and horror are purely creations of the author's mind; scifi is tethered to factual information.

    If you need to group scifi, I'd put it with mysteries and thrillers.

    Jennifer ,

    @Uair @bookstodon I think fantasy and sci-fi should be their own sections in bookstores and not grouped with anything. It annoys me that they're on the same shelves. Sci-fi and fantasy are split up in online bookstores. Mystery and horror also need to stay separate.

    Having lived on another planet most of my life, I just started reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, about which I knew very little. It seems to be a stinging critique of capitalism. Haven't met the vile Mr Wonka yet, but I'm sure I'll hate him and his dubious employment practices.

    No spoilers, please.

    Jennifer ,

    @riggbeck @bookstodon I read that when I was young and I'm sure all the social commentary was over my head. That would be a good one to revisit!

    Can you name a film that was adapted not from a novel, but from a short story?
    Here's one:

    The Illusionist (2006)

    Jennifer ,

    @franciscawrites @gevoel @octothorpe @bookstodon I hated those books. Not one single woman. I really like the Apple adaptation.

    I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. Suggestions from the awesome Bookstodon community? @bookstodon

    Jennifer OP ,

    @czarbucks @bookstodon yes I've read both of those, they're both favorites! Murderbot is one of my favorite fictional characters! Stop talking to me so I can consume my media 😆

    Jennifer OP ,

    @isaactly_s @bookstodon China Mieville is someone I haven't read who I'd like to try, thanks for the recommendation! I'll try Perdido Street Station, I just read the blurb and it sounds great!

    Jennifer OP ,

    @tkinias @bookstodon I read those last year and loved them. It was such a unique concept! I don't mind some military adjacent stories, just not books that are totally set on military ships and the focus is on war stories. Like I tried Scalzi's Old Man's War and couldn't really get into it.

    Jennifer OP ,

    @h2lift @bookstodon ooh thanks, I'll definitely take a look!

    Jennifer OP ,

    @bhalpin @bookstodon I started the first book but didn't finish, I should give it another try.

    Jennifer OP ,

    @tkinias @Cara @bookstodon I haven't read that one but I've heard of it!

    Jennifer OP ,

    @todwest @bookstodon agree that the future is pretty terrifying. If you liked the Clarke books, you might like the Expanse series. It's set about 200 years in the future and people have colonized the solar system. It's an epic nine book series that's honestly the best sci-fi I've ever read. It's not an idealist future, it's pretty realistic and mostly character based and I guess that's why I like it.

    Jennifer OP ,

    @MythingPerson @bookstodon Murderbot is one of my all-time favorite fictional characters! I read this great keynote Martha Wells gave about the series. https://marthawells.dreamwidth.org/649804.html

    Jennifer OP ,

    @SallyStrange @bookstodon ooh this sounds intriguing! I'll read the blurb!

    Jennifer OP ,

    @czarbucks @bookstodon oh and since you like both of those, you'd probably like the Terrafotmers by Annalee Newitz if you haven't read it. It has a similar cozyish vibe and a main character is a moose!

    Jennifer OP ,

    @LeslieES @bookstodon I read that and thought it was great! I think i saw that someone is making it into a movie!

    Jennifer OP ,

    @kwheaton @isaactly_s @bookstodon I read Left Hand of Darkness for a book club and didn't really like it 😬 I greatly admire her though!

    Jennifer OP ,

    @jens @todwest @bookstodon exactly. The TV show is VERY different from the books as far as characters. There is zero conflict within the Rocinante crew for one thing, I found that super annoying on the show. I thought the TV show was ok but the books are sooooooo much better. I haven't read Jack Reacher, I thought it might be too violent but I liked the first season of the TV show. I like historic fiction too, I'll check those out. A series I really like is Maisie Dobbs, set in post WWI era.

    Jennifer OP ,

    @jens @todwest @bookstodon I watched the whole series and mostly enjoyed it, but I'd already read the books and kept having to explain things to my husband 😆 I will say the actor who played Amos was spot on, and later on there's a mashup of Drummer and Michio Pa and she's great too. I like the book series so much I have all the books and also all the audiobooks. The narrator is fabulous.

    Jennifer OP ,

    @jens @todwest @bookstodon I really wanted to see what they did with Amos at the end of the last book!! You know what, lol. Sadly it ended with book 6.

    Jennifer OP ,

    @jens @todwest @bookstodon I had some issues with Holden's ending, but overall agree. And loved the ending for Amos. Did you read the novella Sins of our Fathers? I was kinda annoyed book 9 didn't wrap up one storyline so the novella satisfied that. My favorite novella was Strange Dogs 😳😬

    Jennifer OP ,

    @jens @todwest @bookstodon OMG you have to read them! So much additional information!

    Jennifer OP ,

    @jens @todwest @bookstodon there's a collection now available so you buy them all instead of individually.

    Jennifer OP ,

    @8petros @bookstodon thanks, I haven't heard of those first two! The Expanse is my favorite series!

    Jennifer OP ,

    @DrorBedrack @bookstodon ooh I haven't read either of those, thanks!

    Jennifer OP ,

    @LordWoolamaloo @bookstodon I haven't read those yet, thanks for the recommendation!

    Jennifer OP ,

    @ericsfraga @liesvanrompaey @bookstodon I read something of his years ago, don't remember what. I know it wasn't either of those two, I'll check them out!

    Jennifer OP ,

    @fskornia @bookstodon I have not read any of these, thanks!

    Jennifer OP ,

    @jda @bookstodon excellent!

    Jennifer OP ,

    @lazygirl @bookstodon it's one of my favorites! And Murderbot is here on Mastodon 😆 @murderbotbot

    Jennifer OP ,
    Jennifer OP ,

    @thatgeoguy @bookstodon I loved it! But unfortunately do not like the sequels 😔

    Jennifer OP ,

    @aprilfollies @AlsoPaisleyCat @bookstodon this sounds great, thanks!

    Jennifer OP ,

    @RHW @Sablebadger @bookstodon I like to reread both of those when I want to feel happy. 😁

    Jennifer OP ,
    Jennifer OP ,

    @Z_Zed_Zed @elysegrasso @diazona @Zumbador @bookstodon I'm ok with unrealistic things in books as long as it's consistent. If a book breaks its own rules to move the story forward I find that deeply irritating. Books set in imaginary worlds should still be realistic based on the rules of the world.
