I forgot about this little cutie pie! 🥰

If you want some more info, I have this post that has more pics and info, including the researcher that first documented it holding the actual owl!

It's a great story. He heard a call he didn't know and chased it for 6 years until he found this little guy.

Edit: Thank you for posting!

Looks like a red bellied woodpecker and a screech owl.

@anon6789@lemmy.world avatar

That's correct! You win the grand prize of your weight in owl pellets!

For the audience at home, here is how you tell male from female Red Bellied Woodpeckers:

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/9026180a-f075-4228-93fc-33162ba97485.jpeg

And they do actually have a red belly, you just usually can't see it.

johannesvanderwhales ,

And for people who think they should've been called red-headed woodpeckers, the name was taken.

anon6789 OP ,
@anon6789@lemmy.world avatar

The original does have more red so it's deserved at least

federalreverse ,

Why not go for "redneck woodpecker" though? Granted, it does look a bit too elegant for that name.

Wow, these fellas look like hawks! Interesting how versatile the owls are!

Also thank you for sharing all these great owl pics and info, I joined the group spontaneously when I saw an interesting picture on my feed and now I've kinda started to look forward new owl news - these posts often make my day! Quality stuff!

blubton ,

If you haven't already, check out the Owl-natomy posts! They are a great way to learn a lot about the general anatomy of owls; I at least learned a lot from those posts.

Jojowski ,
@Jojowski@sopuli.xyz avatar

Good tip! I went and studied the Owl-natomy posts and indeed learned a lot!

beebarfbadger , in What a Twist! : New study says owls may actually be able to turn their heads a full 360 degrees

Humans can turn their head 360° too. Owls can just do it more than once.

"That tree just winked at me!"

Probably explains a lot of “tree-men” type things. That guy is a master of disguise!

What do they mean by “feather tufts”, though? Is that some banding or flashes of color on wings or something that serve as an indicator? (Like deer tails?)

anon6789 OP ,
@anon6789@lemmy.world avatar

Think how long human kind hasn't had corrective lenses, only had moonlight to see at night, and a very limited understanding of the natural world, and you can imagine many tall tales and mythical monsters could be traced back to owls!

Tufts are the horns, though the proper name is plumicorns, which is an awesome word and should be more popular.

Debate goes on about the exact range of purposes of them, but showing alertness can be one, like the deer tail you mentioned.

unnecessary blur on that there picture...

XTL ,
xor ,

yeah, duh, everyone has that effect on their camera

in this case, in was unnecessarily added in

Mechanite ,

Unless it was completely faked, the photographer likely has no choice for this. Lowering the aperture to get a wider depth of field wou reduce the amount of light significantly to either introduce motion blur (if not on a tripod) or significant noise. Also, this sort of angle on a telephoto lens would be very difficult to not blur out

Unless it is faked in, it's difficult to tell though

Vash63 ,

"Whom" is proper in both American and UK English...

anon6789 OP ,
@anon6789@lemmy.world avatar

Yes indeed, but I don't know if I'd need both hands to count the number if Americans I've heard use "whom" in a sentence outside of English class, let alone used it correctly. I don't even feel I see it written often here.

Emerald ,

I mean hey its important to note that its not scientifically accurate. I think its a nice meme though as it really does look like criss cross applesauce.

gmtom , in always something
@gmtom@lemmy.world avatar

Americans are goofy af "criss cross applesauce" bitch that don't even rhyme

Grass ,

I need an example pronunciation of how it doesn't rhyme because the only way I can hear it in my head rhymes. I've never heard of this name for the seating method though.

gmtom ,
@gmtom@lemmy.world avatar

Cross rhymes with boss, toss, moss, loss, Ross.

Sauce rhymes with horse, coarse, force.

So for them to rhyme you would either have to say "crawse" or "Soss"

chiliedogg ,

"Soss" is how we pronounce "sauce" and I don't know where you're finding the "r" sound.
