Cats are very weird animals.

I've seen my cats sleeping with their head facing "north" and their lower back facing "south" like it's the most comfortable way to sleep.

That's not to say that's proof that there's no way this kitten is being abused, just supporting the notion that it isn't exactly unimaginable for a kitten to have no problem being put into a wine glass.

I think 11 would've been a lot better if it had come out in 2021. In 2023 all of the COVID themes were really played out.

Hopefully 12 wasn't written 3 years ago.

The countries with the most Fediverse servers are rich and former/current colonial powers. One of the best true barometers of the success of the Fediverse is how quickly we can turn that on its head. ( sopuli.xyz )

In the end I don’t think internet users in rich powerful countries are the users most likely to benefit and invest their time into in the fediverse. They might be the ones with the most free time, money and privilege around computers which makes being on the leading edge of niche technologies far easier, but I don’t think...

I think you're overthinking this, and extrapolating limited data way too far.

For one, of course historically rich countries are going to be hosting more technology. Tech is expensive, and less developed countries are called that because they're less developed, which includes electricity grids, internet, economic power, and so on.

Another issue is that just because a Mastodon server is hosted in a particular country, doesn't mean only people in or from that country can make an account there. Sure, there are some servers that want to keep their communities specific to their local area, but the vast majority have no restrictions. Anyone from anywhere can sign up.

If you're trying to figure out how to make it so historically poor countries have the most servers instead, you're going to have to figure out how to fund and manage infrastructure expansion.

It feels like you're coming at this with the assumption of "every country has the resources to spin up hundreds of social media servers, but they're just not interested", which is kind of a weird conclusion to come to after recognizing the historical impact of colonialism and the privilege differences it's led to.

I gotta be honest, I'm not sure I'd be willing to trust something I set up myself with general-purpose software to handle something as important as a smoke alarm alert.

That's the sort of thing that gets hardware dedicated to the task and doesn't rely on me configuring everything correctly and Linux not crashing because some other unrelated process had issues.

The food dish only has food in one side! I need you to turn it for me so I don't upset my whiskers. What do you mean just move the food with my paw?

I don't really care about my TV being 4K, but I like the extra desktop space on my PC.

I thought this was going to be about Netflix at first

I take it to mean it's playing into a fascist's insecurities; it's only supposed to sound judgy if you're insecure about being a strongman's sub.

If you have the right TV, the right streaming box, and the right receiver (if you use one), HDR looks fine, but a lot of TVs either don't support HDR or have a really terrible HDR implementation. And then a lot of streaming services either have bad non-HDR video streams or just take the TV claiming HDR at face value and don't give you a way to turn it off.

I don't think it's fair to expect everyone to extensively research and buy high-end TVs just so they can (literally) see a movie or show.

Isn't it weird how long it took phone makers to catch onto the use-case of the camera flash being a flashlight?

wander1236 ,
@wander1236@sh.itjust.works avatar

I don't know about the heat aspect, but third party flashlight apps are just using the camera API without showing you a viewfinder or exposing shutter controls.

Even the built-in flashlight toggles on Android are still just creating a camera session and enabling the flash.

To block third party flashlight apps, manufacturers would have to block third party camera apps too, or add in some sort of global time limit for the flash.

That doesn't mean every employee and contractor is coming in to work 24/7.

A workweek is per-person, not per-company.

Windows is getting worse and worse, but do we have to spin legitimate bugs as some nefarious plot?

TinEye is returning matches from 2013, so I'm gonna say you're wrong.

If you're talking about the Quest 2/3, I don't think Facebook gave them the ability to charge fast enough to outdo the current draw of some games.

Supposedly both are limited to around 15W charging, so no matter what cable and charger you try, the battery will still drain in a lot of situations.
