IMHO, data centers kind of need to be somewhat close to important population areas in order to ensure low latency.
You need a spot with attainable land, room to scale, close proximity to users, and decent infrastructure for power / connectivity. You can’t actually plop something out in the middle of BFE.
One of those cities is pretty close to Redmond. The other 2 are 2-3 hours away from a major population center. The San Francisco equivalent would be data centers in Sacramento. Not exactly next door, but close enough to ensure that latency isn’t terrible for loading an e-commerce site or something.
Charging is literally the only reason why I would ever consider a Tesla over another EV. The non-Tesla networks are often significantly underpowered for fast-charging, or straight up broken. And not all of Tesla’s network is open to non-Tesla EVs and or non-Tesla NACS EVs. If you want full access to the largest, fastest, and most reliable network, you need a Tesla.
But I guess Musk now wants to put that at risk too.
This is a very common misconception. These vehicles will not have access to the full network. They’ll have access to about a 1/3rd of it.
Telsa’s North American network is over 50k chargers, but these companies are all advertising that they’re going to have access to just over 15k chargers.
Moreover, if you look at Telsa’s network map, they have already defined which charges are all EV, non-Tesla NACS, and Telsa Only. And Telsa only is exactly what it means. No Fords or GMs.
If you’re going somewhere where you think you might be at risk, IMHO, it’s probably just easier to turn your phone off. Android and iOS both require a non-biometric passcode after boot.
Or, if you want to keep your phone on, enable lockdown mode on Android, or tap power 5 times on iOS to require a non-biometric password at the next unlock.
IMHO, as someone that works in security / privacy, I tend not to view it as a binary thing. It depends on where you live, what you’re protesting, what you look like, who you are, etc.
Are you in Russia or China and are protesting the government? Yeah, I might leave that thing at home. Are you a white lady in San Francisco marching with a pink knit cat hat during brunch hours, then you’re probably well on the other side of the risk spectrum. You might actually be introducing more risk by having less immediate access to communication or a camera.
It’s going to be to their advantage to claim that they’re shutting down, even if they actually want that $50B buyout. If they say they’re going to sell, they’re going to lose what little leverage they have left. The public that wants TikTok will get TikTok, and the public is going to stop pestering politicians about it.

Honestly, life on Android isn’t going to be much better.
The great firewall blocks Meta, Google, Signal, and Telegram’s sides. So no play store downloads, and no direct APK downloads.
Chinese users on iOS and Android basically have to pirate an IPA or APK, sideload, hope that shit wasn’t compromised by the state, and VPN out of the country.
The argument isn’t that the services aren’t convenient. They are absolutely convenient. Moreover, I would argue that convenience hits pretty hard when you consider most households under the babyboomer generation are working more, and can’t afford to have one adult at home doing meal prep while their spouse is paying the rent / mortgage.
The point of the piece is that these services fuck over workers and restaurants.
