IMHO, it was the super simple stuff that we see in elections all over the world. A candidate gets a leg up if they are well known or is a continuation of a recent administration that people liked.
Yeah, this text messaging is very different the all over the world. Different phones, different carrier policies and different apps have resulted in different nations being invested in different platforms.
SMS, and things that piggy back on it, dominate north America. So this will mean more to those users than people in Europe, Asia, etc.
Alternative SMS / RCS apps in iOS would be very nice to have.
That said, people who are buying iPhones are usually buying iPhones because they like Apple’s experiences. People that want more options for default apps tend to be going to Android.
At least with SMS / RCS, people can buy a different phone and explore different clients. When I talk to my friends and family in countries dominated by Line, WeChat, or WhatsApp, I’m kind of stuck dealing with those crappy user experiences. Those companies want to trap me in their user experiences and there are even fewer alternatives if I want to interact on their platforms.
It’s dumb, but I think the author was trying to say, “we have an emissions solution for the motor, and now it’s worth exploring where else we need to address emissions for motor vehicles.”
Yeah, I’m still on the fence with what happened after the me-too stuff. Some women spoke out against him, but several independent investigations were not able to substantiate the claims. Hearing Howard’s words, juxtaposed to what was written to him, is pretty bonkers. He thinks he’s a genius that can reinvent math, and he gets super defensive at any polite and candid feedback of his bizarre work.
I know diagnosing someone off random internet videos is a silly thing to do, but every time this dude pops up in the news, my brain jumps to “there is something significant in the DSM for this guy.”
These are volunteers, that have day jobs, that have to spend their own time and money to deal with the legal ramifications of that. These aren’t people with legal teams and millions to blow on risk mitigation. These are hobbyists doing this after work, after helping the kids with homework, after cooking dinner for the family, etc.
Good news is that other instances exist. This is just what one group of volunteers is offering to the world.
When instances get big, it gets really hard for volunteer admins to manage communities with controversial content. You end up having to deal with legal BS and lots of reports.
Admins and mods putting restrictions in place has more to do with keeping the community maintainable. Dealing with all of that stuff is tough when it’s after work and out of your own pocket.
I wish folks had a little bit more empathy for people volunteering their time and money to offer a free service. Lemmy.world’s head admin isn’t Zuck. He’s just a regular Joe Shmoe doing this in his free time.

IMHO, the big thing is the AI stuff. The propagation of LLMs and diffusion models were always going to be a big threat to certain companies, and that cat is out of the bag. MS and Google have already started integrating those things into their products, and it was really just a matter of time before Apple did the same.
Trail selection also feels like something that is inevitable for Apple and Google. The trails have been in both companies maps for years, and both companies have smart watches with GPS and hiking workouts. I’m not shocked that you can now actually tap on a trail. This feels more like an obvious missing feature.
And the other little stuff - a calculator on the iPad? Window snapping? Passwords moved the applications folder instead of the preference panel? Timed reminders finally showing in the calendar? The only shocking thing is that these features weren’t part of the 1.0 products.
The point of for profit dating apps isn’t to find you a date. It’s to have you engage with the service for as long as possible so they can make money off you.
