This essay somehow resonates in me. Since I can remember, I never understood genders. It's simply not a thing for me. Why should we be restrained and oppress ourselves with a binary choice? It doesn't make any sense in a world of diversity. It's a purely social construction that doesn't feet my view and who I am. We are all humans.

“Autistic people aren’t being fooled into being nonbinary. We see past the binary that fools you.”

can anyone recommend a book about intimacy that takes into account neurodiversity?

@yawnbox @actuallyautistic I'm mostly thinking of fiction examples like An Unkindness of Ghosts
"Hollow" by Mia Mingus and some of the other stories from Octavia's Brood
"Sick Woman Theory," implicitly more than explicitly.

I just finished watching the first season of Geek Girl by autistic creator Holly Smale. 💛

Harriet knows she is different, but doesn't yet know the reason why...but we do. 😉

Fingers crossed Netflix has the smarts to quickly green light a season 2.

@autism101 @actuallyautistic thats not a reason thats a description

they decide to call the difference a name and then say the name is an explanation

Do you have any clothing routines? I own eight gray plain t-shirts with no tags which I love. I often will just wear them over and over again.

@octonion @autism101 @actuallyautistic oh yeah especially when I had to wear safety-toe boots and helmets and hi-vis vests and stuff all the time for work, every moment of my off-time I could spend in tunic mode was such a relief

@moz @octonion @autism101 @actuallyautistic I had a housemate once who used rye flour to clean her hair. I tried it and it actually works!

I read about a new detailed map of the human brain. As expected, the "normal brains" were contrasted with "disordered" ones and how eventually they might learn "what's wrong" with them.

Autistic brains are just different, not "wrong".

What’s the biggest myth about autism that my comrades have come across in the course of their self-advocacy?

@actuallyautistic

sal ,
@sal@brain.worm.pink avatar

@hellomiakoda @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic 1. That professional diagnosis is based off of a "test" in any meaningful sense, rather than a doctor's opinion after asking some questions about you - that you can just as readily ask and answer yourself without a doctor - filtered not just through the doctor's misconceptions about autistic people but biases towards all types of subjugated people especially children and women.

  1. The myth that an early diagnosis is a "privilege" and leads to getting "help."

This man told me that disabled COVID deaths were a non-issue that we just needed to get over by 'going to therapy'. 🙃

We need to talk more about mental health in the community.

What topics specifically should be addressed more openly?

@actuallyautistic

sal ,
@sal@brain.worm.pink avatar

@Georgy @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic & what's more, treatments for trauma have been largely designed to put people back into - or at least to 'normalize' - the thinfs that traumatized them in the first place. the military recognized 'ptsd' in soldiers so it could either find ways to put them back into the war-machine or discharge them as individually disabled while maintaining their operations as 'morally upstanding.'

Hi! I'm hoping for help with an art project exploring autism and 'barriers' (sensory, social, structural) that lead to overwhelm, shutdown, meltdown, exclusion... (Either via masking or directly). I'm starting by compiling a list of things - my own include stuff like being interrupted whilst focussed on a thing, crisp bag rustling, body spray, unnecessary 'chit chat' group emails, arbitrary changes... Any more that any of you would like to share would be much appreciated. Each 'barrier' will be written out within the artwork @actuallyautistic @actuallyaudhd

@gri @actuallyautistic @actuallyaudhd - Surveillance (such as registries given to law enforcement, as Dr Amy Marschall has written about: https://resiliencymentalhealth.com/2022/03/02/petition-tell-the-aclu-to-fight-mandatory-autism-databases/ )

  • Custody preference given to parents who used forced interventions (taking children away from parents who respect their right to say NO
  • Threat of conservatorship if we appear 'low-functioning' to allistics
  • Diagnosis excluding us from immigrating to many countries

Is autism self-diagnosis valid? Yep. 💜

Hey all, after reading dozens of research papers, and meta-analyses, and living through it, I made a thing!

I'd love it if you'd check it out! 🥰

Update: I've added a lot of new stuff to the project.
