We need to talk more about mental health in the community.

What topics specifically should be addressed more openly?

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic suicide and depression are big topics, with suicide rates higher in ASD people across the age range. Also, the issues associated with the clash between logical ASD and illogical feelings, as the normal therapies do not have the same effect due to this clash. Also, many of the things that cause the depression (in my case) stem from perception of interactions with others, meaning successful solutions almost always involve isolating, which is not great :ir:

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic almost all intervention techniques/research for better mental health/overcoming depression/ trauma are for NTs. They don’t work for NDs at best, and sometimes they make things actually worse.

@Georgy @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic & what's more, treatments for trauma have been largely designed to put people back into - or at least to 'normalize' - the thinfs that traumatized them in the first place. the military recognized 'ptsd' in soldiers so it could either find ways to put them back into the war-machine or discharge them as individually disabled while maintaining their operations as 'morally upstanding.'

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic the lack of mental health services in general.

The healthcare industry can’t even handle neurotypical mental health properly, let alone autistic mental health. On average, active online autistic community members (non-healthcare-professionals) know more about autistic mental health than the average mental health practitioner.

This should be addressed more openly, while keeping opportunists out, somehow.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Solutions to the expense of getting help.

Depression and suicide are good...it's hard to have candid conversations without people freaking out.

Communicating with people who suffer from addiction would be another.
