Phone Link is Microsoft's late and closed source alternative to KDE Connect. It requires you sign in to a Microsoft Account for it to work.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/phone-link-requirements-and-setup-cd2a1ee7-75a7-66a6-9d4e-bf22e735f9e3

This means all the transactions between your phone and your PC are monitored and sucked up by Microsoft.

ftfy, i wanted to give it a shot one time and it literally didnt work, at all. all of Microsofts cross device features are a hot mess, like how you are supposed to be able to share the clipboard between logged in windows PCs, never could get that working either.

silverdiamond ,

Apart from screen mirroring and sms that everyone has mentioned the proprietary alternative undeniably has more features.
I don't know whether it is phone link or link to windows but one of them has a feature where your phone can be used as a webcam over WiFi. As someone who set up ip webcam on my phone and used obs virtual camera through most of the pandemic's online classes it's quite useful and I'd like to see features like that just work and are not relying on mjpeg and proprietary software on the phone end.
Their auto hotspot feature i haven't gotten to work and i think is useless but I'm thankful that i don't have to turn off kde connect when using samsung dex.

@Bro666 i appreciate your reply! I'll link you to my response to a different post here outlining a bit more of my experience. tl;dr, I've used multiple programs in personal and academic settings. Some FOSS options are great and comparable! Some miss the mark, even if they get close. It's not for lack of trying, it's that out of the multiple programs I've learned over the years, the FOSS options tend to be the odd ones out.

https://woof.tech/@crocodisle/112579981685976482

Even blender is guity of this with its default control scheme being the odd one out among Maya, Unity, and Substance, but it can be modified enough to make up for this and has other attractive aspects to make it a worthy contender. Digital tools tend to be used in an ecosystem that they are integrated with. Learning new workflows if fine, but there's value in being able to do what's already being done well in a similar way without much fuss.

We are looking for a new set of Community KDE Goals to work on.

What should KDE focus on over the next two years? Are you ready to share your vision, time and stamina to push KDE to the next level?

Let's evolve KDE together! Find out more here: https://blog.lydiapintscher.de/2024/06/05/what-should-kde-focus-on-for-the-next-2-years-you-can-propose-a-goal/

boredsquirrel ,

Make Fedora Kinoite beta and nightly official testing Distros. It makes so much more sense to base off modern but tested packages, and to use an atomic distro for keeping the other issues aside.

But if you also need to support messy package based distros with their broken package managers, that is for sure problematic.

@areyouevenreal

You have to realize just how alien that sounds to anyone unfamiliar with the Linux ecosystem.

I was vaguely familiar with different distros, and how it's basically the Lego of operating systems, from tinkering around with it twenty years ago.

It was funny asking for recommendations and getting everything from Mint to Arch.

For someone else who had absolutely no idea, and who'd only ever used Windows, it would absolutely be a project.

areyouevenreal ,

You can pretty much just install Mint or Pop OS and go. There are a lot of options (I would argue too many) but you can ignore most of them as a beginning user. No one should recommend arch to a beginner and anyone who does should be shot.

Also are you on a mastodon instance or something?

Season of KDE (SoK) participants have improved translations, Kdenlive, LabPlot and more.

SoK is KDE's mentorship program that helps members of the public become active open source contributors.

This year, participants have translated apps into more languages, implemented multi-format rendering and keyframe curve editing in @kdenlive , ported @be4foss testing tools to Windows, added options for importing and exporting data to @LabPlot and much, much more.
