I made a sleeve of aluminum foil bubble insulation for mine. I taped it together with aluminum HVAC tape. It makes the enclosure heat up quicker, but I have to run the enclosure fan on longer prints to keep it from getting too hot.

cmnybo ,

I just use the exhaust fan for temperature control.

If you use Firefox, you can transfer tabs between your phone and computer.

An increase in bad seeds on Bit Torrent?

So I've been grabbing a few shows I want to watch reruns of while playing Balatro that don't have good blu ray releases. My piracy is fairly limited these days so I don't bother with private trackers (do have a VPN though). In the past, I never really had an issue with grabbing a few one offs off the popular, maybe honeypot,...

cmnybo ,

Someone probably just did a crappy job converting HDR to SDR.

cmnybo ,

Apple hardware is overpriced and they go out of their way to make it unrepairable.

streaming or torrenting today vs. 5 years ago

I've been a good boy for 5 years or so but the seas call to me. Are streaming sites the way to go now or is torrenting still a better bet for mainstream movies and tv? I'd imagine all of my accounts have been deleted on those sites so I'd be starting over.

cmnybo ,

Torrents and usenet will get you high quality videos if that's what you want. Streaming sites are usually only have low bitrate videos.

cmnybo ,

I doubt many people would do that. You would have to intentionally set it up that way. Residential ISPs almost always supply a modem with a built in router which will have a firewall. You would have to set it to bridge mode, enable the DMZ, or use your own modem.

I haven't connected a computer directly to the internet since I used dial-up.

cmnybo ,

The quality of Google search results has been rapidly declining over the last few years. It's not really even worth using anymore.

cmnybo ,

I found a website that showed my how to use RSS feeds to automatically download TV shows. Having my favorite shows download automatically overnight was very convenient. There was no streaming services for TV shows back then and even if there was, my internet was way too slow for that. I had a portable media player with a massive 80GB hard drive that I could load my pirated TV shows and ripped DVDs on when I was away from home.

cmnybo ,

And of course those expensive chargers will become bricks when the company goes out of business or just decides to stop supporting them.

cmnybo ,

They can reduce the price as much as they want, but I still won't pay for it until they get rid of the DRM.

cmnybo ,

We need some that are fully open source software and hardware. I'm tired of all of the proprietary crap.

cmnybo ,

It's not even an issue with java. Apps ran fine on the original Android devices with single core CPUs and half a gig of RAM or less. It's just that developers get lazier as more powerful hardware become available. Nobody cares about writing well optimized code anymore.

If Google and Apple required all apps to run smoothly on low end hardware from 5 years ago, we would be using our phones until the wear out rather than having to upgrade every couple of years if the batteries are replaceable.

cmnybo ,

You must live somewhere dry. I have to keep my filament in a box with silica gel.

cmnybo ,

I prefer OSM since I can use the maps offline. Google maps is useless out in the middle of nowhere without any cell service.

‘My whole library is wiped out’: what it means to own movies and TV in the age of streaming services ( www.theguardian.com )

*What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online? That question was on the minds of Telstra TV Box Office customers this month after the company announced it would shut down the service in June. Customers were told that unless they moved over to another service, Fetch, they would no longer be...

This is worse than a streaming service dropping a show. They are removing the ability to play digital files that people purchased.

Microsoft is testing Game Pass ads on the Windows 11 Settings homepage ( www.ghacks.net )

Microsoft's announcement: "We are introducing a new Game Pass recommendation card on the Settings homepage. The Game Pass recommendation card on Settings Homepage will be shown to you if you actively play games on your PC. As a reminder – the Settings homepage will be shown only on the Home and Pro editions of Windows 11 and...

cmnybo ,

You can install any Linux distro other than Ubuntu if you don't want ads in your operating system.

cmnybo ,

They could be made fairly small. The Curta calculator was hand held. Unfortunately, they are very expensive now, but there is a simulator online if you want to play with one.

cmnybo ,

There are two ways to reduce piracy. Either make it easier to access content legally or make it harder to pirate. The former is significantly more effective than the latter. Taking down pirate streaming sites is a game of whack-a-mole and peer to peer won't go anywhere.

cmnybo ,

4K is nice for a large computer monitor if you want to replace a multi monitor setup with a single monitor. It needs to be 40+ inches, unfortunately there are not many monitors like that available.

cmnybo ,

When the memory is shared with the GPU, bandwidth becomes much more important. A desktop will just use a dedicated GPU if it needs the performance.

cmnybo ,

You have to enable compression in fstab.

[Resolved] After updating through both APT and the Software Store, I can't play mp4 videos with VLC anymore. The screen goes blank for a second or two then the audio starts playing without the video..

I'm using Debian 12, Ryzen 7 5700X processor, and Radeon HD 5450 graphics card. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling VLC but it didn't resolve the issue. Here's an excerpt from the VLC's log file:...

cmnybo ,

Did you happen to also update your video driver and not reboot?

cmnybo ,

You will have to use wayland to run monitors at different refresh rates without tearing. You will also need wayland for HDR. It's still not working perfectly yet, but there is a lot of work being put into it.

cmnybo ,

I don't care if it's a human or a bot trying to sell me something because my ad blocker will make sure I don't even see it.

cmnybo ,

Batteries degrade with age too. It would probably have to be cycled 10 times a day to get that many cycles.

cmnybo ,

Of course it doesn't support band 71, which is the only 5G band I can get at home.

cmnybo ,

I would recommend using btrfs on SSDs and ext4 on hard drives.

cmnybo ,

Subvolumes are somewhat like a partition, but they don't have fixed size. What they allow you to do is take snapshots. Snapshots are used to backup and restore the subvolume. They can be created instantly and don't take up any space until something is changed.

cmnybo ,

What distro? Some installers will set everything up for you and others you have to setup subvolumes manually.

cmnybo ,

It's very easy to setup a Hurricane Electric tunnel and you get an entire /48 for free. The only downside is that it doesn't work over CGNAT.

It looks like IPv6rs is using WireGuard, so it can work even with CGNAT. I didn't see any mention of what size allocation they hand out though.

cmnybo ,

At that price, the hardware will be ancient and you will spend more on electricity in a year than you spent on the server.

FCC Imposes Nearly $200 Million in Fines on US Wireless Carriers (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon) for Illegal Location Data Sharing ( neuters.de )

The carriers sold "real-time location information to data aggregators, allowing this highly sensitive data to wind up in the hands of bail-bond companies, bounty hunters, and other shady actors," FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel said in a statement....

cmnybo ,

OK, now give them a fine that will actually hurt.

3d printed threads in TPU

I am woking on making solar panel mounts for the roof rack of my nissan xterra from TPU, since it can take a beating. Does any one have any experience with 3d-printed TPU threads? And how much stress before it can take before a bolt rips out? Also should i use teflon thread seal so the a bolt won't come loose?

cmnybo ,

I would through bolt the TPU and use a large washer on each side. Teflon lubricates the threads making it easier to turn. You want thread locker to keep a bolt from coming loose. Be careful with the thread locker since it eats many types of plastic.

cmnybo ,

It's not even a Linux vulnerability, it's an issue with the UEFI shim.
