NoneYa , in Obscure screw added so appliance cannot be disassembled

A grinder to the center would make that compatible with a flathead screwdriver.

TropicalDingdong ,

Your gonna need a teeny tiny grinder. Maybe a dremmel?

Alteon ,

Everyone should have a Dremel. Damn thing is so useful.

Zipitydew ,

They really are and they're not prohibitively expensive either. Use mine all the time.

NounsAndWords ,

At that point you might as well just do it to the screw instead and use the normal screwdriver.

What brand?

NoneYa ,

Yeah we should be shaming companies that do this sort of shit.

OP, please tell us which brand designed this. I’d love to know to stay away from their crap as much as possible.

There is a screwdriver that you can get at the hardware store for this type of screw. You shouldn’t have to, I definitely agree. But fuck ‘em, repair your shit with the $5 screwdriver.

Comon, do some reading:

I had to cut the casing open in order to discover why I couldn't unscrew the fourth.

HaywardT , in Obscure screw added so appliance cannot be disassembled

Harbor freight has sets of tamper resistant bits. They are also handy for regular Allen and torx heads.

ThrowawaySobriquet ,

This right here. I bought their security bit set and, true, I've only ever opened the case three times in the few years I've had it, but in those three times nothing else would have worked without a more destructive solution

nilloc ,

Here’s the link, it’s helped me out a bunch of times in the 6-8 years I’ve had it.

2 notes though

  • these are hard cheese grade metal. Don’t plan on removing any high torque, Rusty or partly stripped screws with them, they’ll either break or round off.
  • if the screw is too recesses down a narrow hole, these won’t help. The bit holders are too wide to fit in. I have a Honeywell Air Purifier with one security Torx that is 3-4” down a hole that this set failed me on.
Godnroc ,

Just to add to your comment, the sell a smaller set for a few dollars less and also a "precision" screwdriver set that has some similar bits not but the full set. Both are very handy to keep around for this exact thing.

Engineer Mod , in Kobo partners with iFixit to make new e-readers more repairable

Great news, iFixit partnerships are a great way to improve repairability.

Piemanding ,

I just hope iFixit doesn't become the bad guy as the only repairability game in town.

lgsp OP ,
@lgsp@feddit.it avatar

You know, I was thinking the same thing. It's always iFixit: Motorola, Nokia, and now Kobo. But I don't see how a company with a mission like iFixit can turn into bad guy (enshittify?). Am I too optimistic?

Piemanding ,

Just looked it up and iFixit is not publicly traded so the potential for enshitification is much lower, but still possible. If iFixit goes public I will lose all faith in them.

ForgottenUsername , in To buy no longer means anything.

Funnily enough I've been talking to Microsoft since the first announcement, asking them for a refund for (now) locking me out of a game I paid for.

It has not gone well unfortunately, Microsoft really do not give two shits about the consumer, so long as they can milk you for all the data your worth and charge you for the privilege.

Might be petty, but I won't buy a Xbox or another Microsoft game until they give my Minecraft/$20 back. I guess I'm a pirate

Please_RTFA , in To buy no longer means anything.

I guess I don't have Minecraft anymore either, the email service I used back then doesn't exist anymore so I never got those notifications.

fuckingkangaroos , in Disable tracking on Chevy Bolt 2019

So if they're charging more for bad drivers, they'll charge less for good drivers, right?

If one company raises rates on bad drivers and uses the difference to offer lower rates to other drivers, they'll get more customers.

DragonTypeWyvern ,

You should do stand-up, that was hilarious

Cold_Brew_Enema , in Disable tracking on Chevy Bolt 2019

Your first mistake is buying Chevy.

JohnDClay OP ,

Only cheap EV, not much of a choice

Cold_Brew_Enema ,

I would rather ride a pogo stick to work than ever give Chevy another penny.

JohnDClay OP ,

Why?

Cold_Brew_Enema ,

Because every experience I have ever had with them has been awful, and everyone I know who has owned a chevy has had constant issues. Transmission failures under 50k miles, electronics breaking on new cars, entire ac failing on a car with with only 40k miles, etc. I could keep going. GM clearly does not give a shit about quality control.

yoz , in Disable tracking on Chevy Bolt 2019

Or stop buying cars made by these companies.

StupidBrotherInLaw ,

They all do it, to varying extents. The only good way to avoid it is buying a car old enough to not collect your data.

humorlessrepost , in Disable tracking on Chevy Bolt 2019

Cadillac here. I just unscrew the cellular antenna from the onstar module before leaving the lot. Looks like the onstar module is less conveniently located for bolts (it’s under my rear seats, I think it’s behind your screen), but that’s a good way to avoid collateral damage to other things on the same fuse. Since it’s a separate antenna from the gps, I even still get navigation, just without map updates. It’s all the good of a cell jammer, with none of the prison or fines. For now.

kalpol ,

Even better because without the antenna load, the transmitter may burn out.

Imagine the alternative world where you had to back up your data, discard the device and buy an entirely new one because a simple piece of plastic broke.

Apple will tell you this practice allows them to build innovative and superior products while integrating hardware and software compatibility closer than ever.

CaptDust ,

When it happened, I was entirely ready to accept the drop as an excuse for OLED model upgrade, then I found the iFixit shop and those thoughts were dashed haha
