Damn that's cheap. People are.really bad at math I think.

HaywardT ,

Because electricity in California is deregulated.

HaywardT ,

I don't have much data(just a little involvement with Enron and their manipulation of electricity costs), but there is a lot of money to be made in electricity. I believe the California lobby is pretty strong and pushing the reduction of natural gas. I think they want an all electric state(not including power plants)

HaywardT ,

Yeah. There is a lot of that. I tried to correct some factual errors about container homes and got downvoted and got replies of pigs butts. Eventually the mod deleted all my comments.

HaywardT ,

When I find people that knowingly lie or are unable to have reasoned discourse I check out their history. If I don't feel like they have anything to contribute to me I add them to my blocklist. It has gotten really big and grows everyday, but people on here now seem very nice.

Maybe that downvotes on this conversation is just because my limited knowledge and opinion doesn't add to the conversation. I don't fault them for that.

HaywardT ,

I'm sure everyone knows this but just in case someone doesnt:

Burning anything where air is the oxidizer creates nitrogen oxides. Because they have a triple valent bond they are very stable so they are around for a long time. If you combust in higher pressures you create more of them. They contribite to acid rain and low level ozone pollution. They are a problem.

All that said I don't think gas stoves are a huge health concern. I would think OSHA would ban natural gas forklifts from operating indoors if that were the case.

HaywardT ,

I didn't see that comment. I guess they are already on my block list.

It's not science, and I could be completely wrong. The article isn't science either. The study is and I haven't looked at it closely. To me it feels very questionable. Some things that make me question it are "contributed to 19,000" is very nebulous. I am sure the downvotes have contributed to my [future] death. I just don't think it is significant.

HaywardT ,

ESS is worthy of a separate post. I doubt they are involved in this anti-gas chicanery, but they would really help push us to a more sustainable future.

I absolutely love milkshakes. I just wish they loved me more.

Is this what god feels like?

It's a cleanse

It would be awesome if US police departments donated all their heavy tactical vehicles to your cause.

HaywardT ,

I think you make some good points.

Most importantly, the hard part of these projects is the right of way. I agree that it should be used to its greatest advantage. I suspect you could rip these rails up, lay down kiddie train rails and a bike path for the same price.

The biggest reason for standard monorails is grade separation.

The burden of air resistance is negligible at these speeds. The rolling resistance, lifespan, and pollution of rubber tires is a disadvantage, but at these speeds it is probably the best use of rubber tires.

You only need two lanes for pods at passing tracks. The need for continuous two way traffic probably means the capacity has outgrown this solution.

HaywardT ,

Suspended monorails don't take taller rails. You can keep the train upright. It has been well demonstrated. The amount of weight on the rails is insignificant compared to what they were designed for. I doubt there would be any detectable movement.

All that said this seems like an overly complicated solution.

HaywardT , (edited )

I would say 30kph would be plenty especially for nonstop on-demand service. 60kph sounds unrealistic.

The reason I think you could lay new track is that kiddie train track is really cheap and used railroad rail is pretty valuable.

The value of a scrap railroad track varies by material and its condition. Depending on its dimensions and shape, a ton can range from $300 to $750. For example, an R50 track will fetch a price of between $200 and $750, while an R65 way will cost more than twice that.

It would be simple to make self driving golf carts that followed a magnetic or inductive guideway or even used a virtually guideway with gps. There are a few of these available off the shelf right now. One I remember is dutch and there was another produced in Great Britain.

HaywardT ,

Rail is hard to steal because it is hard and heavy. Look at the price of small sections used for anvils. It was a shock for me.

I participated in a exploration of PRT that was done by someone at University of Washington a few decades ago. One of the things discussed was the comparison of travel times between slow PRT and fast light rail. It doesn't take many 60-90 second stops to really slow your average speed.

It's kinda like that brain teaser:
If a race car does the first lap at 60 miles an hour how fast does he have to go on the second lap to average 120.

Obscure screw added so appliance cannot be disassembled ( lemmy.world )

Basic blender went bad (motor ran but spindle wasn't rotating). I wanted to disassemble to see if it could be repaired. Three of the four screws were Phillips head. I had to cut the casing open in order to discover why I couldn't unscrew the fourth. It was a slotted spanner.

HaywardT ,

Harbor freight has sets of tamper resistant bits. They are also handy for regular Allen and torx heads.

HaywardT ,

Doesn't seem to me to be an outrageous request. I would have put it in a baggie or Walmart bag and returned it to the store, but it looks like it was resolved pretty easily. The threat to run it on the counter seems unnecessarily Karen.

Something on my mind… ((read body section)) ( www.youtube.com )

((No I'm not supporting the genocide of the Palestinian people. What I am trying to do is, start a conversation about how we as a country (the US), sure seem to be getting pushed and pulled into debates about just about everything under the sun. Perhaps I'm not informed as well as others might be. Maybe I've overlooked...

HaywardT ,

The news requires we be upset. That's where the money is.

Good things are happening around me all the time. I try to stay in the present (though sometimes I do dwell on my future too much.)

HaywardT ,

I bet you are right. They are surprisingly cheap everywhere.

When you get a call from a middle-aged male coworker who had tried to coerce you (younger female) into letting him drop you off at home on a Saturday night: do you call back, text, email, or ignore?

Please read post for full context; any help or input is appreciated! I disclosed sensitive info to a close female coworker (let's say Ann), who is best friends with the male coworker mentioned (Ned). I'm sure she told him, but then they both seemed to want me to still tell him directly. I did because I believe in doing the right...

And the rest of you are COBOL programmers.

HaywardT ,

I believe Intel is on track to do it again.

HaywardT ,

I read an article recently that talked about enabling and disabling cores on the fly.

I think chip binning is perfectly reasonable.

When IBM did this with mainframes it launched Amdahl into existence. His machines were basically the same machine except they were unharnessed.

So that big pharma can get a piece of the action.

How do people actually dumpster dive to get free food? Are there any other cheap/free ways like this to get food?

My local food bank can only provide 8 packages with referrals every time before you run out, and I have, but my situation hasn't improved financially due to various set backs and I'm struggling to feed myself. I've heard that supermarkets throw out massive amounts, but have never been in a position where dumpster diving seemed...

HaywardT ,

I had a friend that was very good at it.

Get in and get out. Dont hang around. Don't hesitate.

He said he thought it was like fishing in that you just didn't know what you were going to get.

What are these "bass" and "treble" that I see in an equalizer ?

I am not an audio person, so do not have much idea about technical terms - but I hear the words "bass" and "treble" almost everywhere now, especially in the equalizer app that came with  a new bluetooth earbuds that I bought (yes, I am still very much a wired-earbud guy, just dipping my toes in the wireless earbud ocean)....

HaywardT ,

Treble is high frequency so clicks are more pronounced, snare drums become more sharp etc.

All the ways streaming services are aggravating their subscribers this week ( arstechnica.com )

Below is a look at the most exasperating news from streaming services from this week. The scale of this article demonstrates how fast and frequently disappointing streaming news arises. Coincidentally, as we wrote this article, another price hike was announced....

HaywardT ,

I just started using the public library apps this week. Piracy has gotten too difficult for me recently.

HaywardT ,

Thanks very much. Looks interesting.

You could use zkp to verify the identity of someone.

What "certain information" do you wish to verify?

HaywardT ,

Sorry. Autocorrected ZKP.

HaywardT ,

You could verify, without transmitting their telephone extension or employee number. You could verify that they are the author of a particular document. I guess you could verify a company is doing a particular action by verifying with a multiple choice question or series of questions.

Tire toxicity faces fresh scrutiny after salmon die-offs ( phys.org )

"You've got a chemical cocktail in these tires that no one really understands and is kept highly confidential by the tire manufacturers," said Nick Molden, CEO of Emissions Analytics. "We struggle to think of another consumer product that is so prevalent in the world and used by virtually everyone, where there is so little known...

HaywardT ,

I wish we would use this term instead of microplastics since microplastics are composed of 78% tire dust.

HaywardT ,

I think it is intentional to get the focus off the problem. "It's not that one industry, it's all the little things. Give up your plastic straw. Give up your plastic bag. It's your fault and in your control. We are just over here turning oil into tires for your convenience."

HaywardT ,

Isn't this a path to creating more methane clathrates?

HaywardT ,

Where I have purchased it it has been cheaper.

HaywardT ,

No. It does degrade some fuel system components on fuel systems not made for it.

HaywardT ,

I think it exists because people have an unreasonable price sensitivity when buying gas. They will drive miles out of their way to save a nickel a gallon. I also think they don't really have a good understanding of mpg factors. I was told by one guy purchasing it that he gets better mileage on it(which we know isn't true)
