How does abrosexuality differ from gender fluidity? If you don't mind me asking?

Sorry, I'd never heard of the term before and took the opportunity to learn a bit

entropicdrift ,
@entropicdrift@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Their gender identity isn't necessarily fluid if they're abrosexual. It's the people they're attracted to that changes, rather than their own identity

Thank you very much. I always feel so ignorant when I don't know things and with such sensitive topics, I always sorry a search engine will misinform me.

Catoblepas ,

I can’t speak for everyone obviously, but among LGBT people there are a lot of ‘microidentities’ that nobody really expects all LGBT people to know about, much less anyone who isn’t. As long as you aren’t all “UGH what is this WEIRD SHIT you have come up with NOW???” it’s perfectly fine to ask what it means.

inspxtr , in NEW COMMUNITY ALERT: Boomers Being Fools

forgive my naivety, how does such a community avoid promoting ageism?

scorpious ,

It doesn’t. Lemmyverse seems to respects/enjoys certain biases and this is one.

Replace "Lemmyverse" with "the American left" and you're closer to the truth.

  • The American left is against racism ... yet harbours an alarming amount of antisemitism and an increasing amount of sinophobia.
  • The American left is against ageism ... directed at young people. Old people are open season.
  • The American left is against religious bigotry ... except Christians.

It's just tribalism cosplaying as idealism. (And it's why, for example, Chinese LGBT groups have been quietly removing themselves from interaction with American LGBTQA+ groups over the past few years.)

@Jumuta@sh.itjust.works avatar

If I host an instance, would it have to find all the communities from scratch?

variants ,

I believe if you host an instance it wont be federated until you start to follow other communities from other instances, then from my understanding all the communities in that instance will start to show up in your 'all' section. so the more you follow the more you will start to federate. thats what makes this tool so great is that you can search all communities and follow them since if you searched from your instance it wont find everything

luthis , in [META] [Crosspost] Announcing a new Search Engine for Lemmy
@luthis@lemmy.nz avatar

Should be able to search all instances. If you know what instance your community is on, then you've already found it so.. why search?

variants ,

thats what this tool does, it lets you search all instances, but the great thing is it lets you choose what instance you are in so that the links open in your instance, instead of having to copy and paste into the search bar like with other search tools ive seen

2dollarsim , in [META] [Crosspost] Announcing a new Search Engine for Lemmy

Can't just search for communities across all instances?

Deftdrummer ,

Until some app or instance or web link or whatever the fuck gets this right - critical mass does not occur.

    And what would a non-vegan want to do in there?

    What's wrong with minority views and practices creating their own spaces?

    On which, is there any non-vegan/anti-vegan thought or idea that a vegan is likely to have not heard already? How many haven't they heard relative to the amount of decent "pro-vegan" ideas they also haven't heard of?

    Maybe a specialised space, echo chamber even, makes sense in order to balance against the gravity of the mainstream?

    Right. Well, I think the instance name "vegantheory.org" was doing that already, and I'm betting you drew your conclusion from the public description of the place too (and aren't in the modlog or anything for challenging their ideas).

    they drive away potential allies because the concept of harm reduction is anathema to their binary thinking. If you’re not ALL in, you’re the enemy.

    I can resonate with that. But I come back to ... "it's totally ok for people to create their own spaces, especially on federated social media and especially for minority groups/ideas".

    There are likely plenty of other spaces for "potential allies" to engage and talk about veganism if they want to, or plenty they, or you, could make on their own.

    Tacitly admitting that vegans are usually antisocial zealots. “It’s right in the name!”

    Well, they're running their own social media platform, so I'm not sure how anti-social they are.

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

    Agreed for the most part. But you can absolutely be antisocial to your ‘other’ or ‘out group’.

    Future ,

    Veganism tends to be a religion for a lot of vegans and they drive away potential allies because the concept of harm reduction is anathema to their binary thinking. If you’re not ALL in, you’re the enemy.

    That is a strawman and a lie as vegans are always celebrating the small wins for the increased protections on animal rights.

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

    I’ve experienced it first hand. I am not a liar.

    maegul ,
    @maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

    I believe you ... gate-keeping types are all over the place really.

    But vegans or the "vegan-curious" aren't one thing or one kind of person, at least not any more. I personally have only ever had positive conversations with vegan types.

    This instance, in being insistent on not entertaining any "harm reduction" or "compromises", makes sense though ... because it's a space for people to talk about that sort of dedicated approach.

    Maggoty Mod ,

    This is not the place to take a run at vegans. It's not the place to take a run at anyone announcing their community.
