Is there a precedent for a really delay-tolerant command line interface? (A bit off-topic)

I've been playing with an idea that would involve running a machine over a delay-tolerant mesh network. The thing is, each packet is precious and needs to be pretty much self contained in that situation, while modern systems assume SSH-like continuous interaction with the user....

McDonald’s Gives Up On ‘AI’ After Comedy Of Errors, Including Putting Bacon On Ice Cream ( www.techdirt.com )

LLMs certainly hold potential, but as we’ve seen time and time again in tech over the last fifteen years, the hype and greed of unethical pitchmen has gotten way out ahead of the actual locomotive. A lot of people in “tech” are interested in money, not tech. And they’re increasingly making decisions based on how to drum...

CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

Because most people, including those implementing this shit, have no idea how LLMs work, or their limitations. I see it every day at my job. I have given up trying to patiently explain why they are having issues.

CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

They’ve been calling us meatbags since at least 2003.

Me: “Reading the technology community will be safe before bed”

OP: “Nah.”

CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

Don’t judge. He has a lot of layers to put on before he goes out in public.

CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

I use Cloudflare as my registrar and public DNS. And only for that. Sorry but they don't get to peek at my network traffic.

CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

Agreed for the most part. But you can absolutely be antisocial to your ‘other’ or ‘out group’.

CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

I’ve experienced it first hand. I am not a liar.

CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

Induction stoves are no joke. Had one in a ski condo I rented and it boiled water faster than I could grind the coffee beans! Threw my whole routine off!

CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

How many recalls do they have to do before all profit from cybertruck sales has evaporated?

CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

This has happened so many times it's almost a cliche. People who do this are mentally ill. It's like cosplaying as a Nazi.

CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

Haha, I work for one of Microsoft’s biggest customers and they still treat us like shit. Trust me they don’t do favors for anybody. They honestly do not care.

CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

I’m going to have nightmares about this post.

CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

I switched my gaming PC to Linux a few months back. I distro hopped for a while due to various issues, and landed on openSUSE Tumbleweed. Everything just works (except for the occasional bug in the updates where I have to wait for the next snapshot for a fix, but that's NBD).

Caveat: I'm all AMD so no Nvidia stuff to worry about. YMMV.

CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

I can’t imagine a different distro would be any different.

BZZZZZZZZZZZT I'm sorry but that answer was not correct. Next player!

Seriously try some of the other distros and you'll have a much more pleasant experience. I already recommended Tumbleweed in another reply but man, anything but Arch is gonna be an improvement for somebody trying to make the switch from Windows gaming for the first time.

CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

Indeed. I haven't run into a modern game that it can't handle. The only thing it has struggled with that I play is old Command & Conquer titles, but that's a Proton issue.

CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

Linux is waiting for you. You know you want it.

What kind of stupid ass title is that? If it’s dangerous, then no! Wtf

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

Aloe Vera gel will help with the pain.

Don’t do this again. Your risk of skin cancer goes up with every bad sunburn.

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

It's always those little spots you don't think about. 😂

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

It's right there in the 4th paragraph of the article itself.

Somebody has to do the dirty work.

Why are fuel perks at grocery stores so ubiquitous?

This seems insane to me. I live in a city where maybe 50-60% of people have cars, and most don't drive them that much. Yet every grocery store I'm aware of with the sole exception of the expensive Whole Foods has a fuel rewards points program. Reasons this should be controversial enough to enable a low-cost alternative:...

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

They aren't subsidizing anything. They aren't losing money on the gas they are selling you. It's just another way to profit from you after you've bought groceries from them.

    Gateway 2000 Computer - Brand New - Free to a good home! ( lemmy.world )

So I'm cleaning out a house and found a brand new Gateway2k Pentium 4 computer. Someone opened the boxes but never took the computer out, its all still in the plastic and I don't want to ruin the unboxing for someone that is into this. The computer is free to a good home in the Boston metro area to make your retro gaming dreams...

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

I threw enough of those away at my first sysadmin job. I never want to see another one! lol

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

Divorce her earlier and keep more of my equity in the house I bought before we were married.

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

Fill it with lorum ipsum just in case any of them are brave enough to take a peek inside.

Plot twist, your crazy bet goes viral (no pun intended) and the guy who dropped the test tube in Wuhan was late to work that day because he was watching a video about it. No pandemic occurs, Trump fades into obscurity, and a small company working on climate change solutions makes an incredible finding and fixes the planet because they didn't have to go bankrupt during COVID.

    Alec Baldwin still shoots someone.

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

On a scale from 2 bags of doritos to holding onto the grass in the front yard so you don't fall off the planet, how high are you right now?

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

Hopefully more of the same moments!

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

I love it. I haven’t done that yet, waiting for retirement when I don’t need to use my brain anymore. Just in case. 😁

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

I just looked it up. You're not getting it back ever, they sell it at auction.

You have to be drunk or going double the speed limit for this to happen though.

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

I'm sure he cries himself to sleep on his cash stuffed mattress. lol

How many people actually want fully on-site IT jobs?

I've been looking for a new job as a software developer. The huge majority of job listings I see in my area are hybrid or remote. I just had an introductory phone call with Vizio (which didn't specify the location type in the job listing). The recruiter told me that the job was fully on-site, which I told her was a deal breaker...

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

My dad is the only human being I know that likes his on-site IT job, but that's probably because he's getting away from the miserable woman he married for a few hours a day.

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

Different boat. You didn’t choose that. Best wishes!

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

Right-wing propaganda would have you believe that most good things are left-wing

One of the few things I agree with them on!

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

the right have left because the left is right

    Nice. I'm stealing this!

Engaging with people on Lemmy is meaningful, especially if it makes you happier.

If you care about not being tracked, look up how to remove the cellular modem in your car. I found instructions on how to do this with my vehicle and it's pretty easy.

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

Yeah but I'll be dead before that happens!

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

Gotta admit I’m curious why you think that.

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

Of course not. I just don't think car ownership is going anywhere for decades. The government doesn't move that fast for anything. I asked in another place in the thread why the guy thought that but just got downvoted for some reason.

HP bricks ProBook laptops with bad BIOS delivered via automatic updates — many users face black screen after Windows pushes new firmware ( www.tomshardware.com )

On May 26, a user on HP's support forums reported that a forced, automatic BIOS update had bricked their HP ProBook 455 G7 into an unusable state. Subsequently, other users have joined the thread to sound off about experiencing the same issue....

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

Why anyone buys HP shit these days is beyond me. So many better options.

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

I don't buy enough laptops to answer that. My last purchase was an Asus which I'm happy with, but after their recent scandal with scamming customers on warranties I don't think I'll be buying from them again. But HP has such a terrible track record with laptops, printers, and just the way they operate in general for consumer stuff, that I would never consider purchasing consumer devices from them.

Is it more energy efficient to charge a phone/tablet using a desktop/laptop while your computer is being used vs using the charger? ( kbin.run )

I was just thinking if you are on your computer anyway would it just use some of the excess electricity that your computer would have wasted or would it be worse than charging your phone from a charger while using your laptop separately.

    CarbonatedPastaSauce ,

It reaaaaaally doesn’t matter. If you charged your phone from empty to full every day it might cost you a dollar. Per year.
