Electric bikes have their own environmental and health advantages. However, riding for long distances – if you’re not a pro – or when planning to go off the tarmac, an e-bike is not the best companion. Before you look for a capable pickup truck – that’ll never be the first choice for a city commute
Probably continuous vs peak power. I've seen brands advertise this very unethically - Lectric has done this. "Ours is 1400W, the competition is only 750W!"
"Police said there was no white light attached to the victim’s bicycle, and Andrews was not wearing a helmet. The report says there was a light attached to the e-bike, although the boy said he wasn’t sure if it was operating."
Lots of stupid to go around here. From the pic, the kid was on a Super 73.
I assume nobody sees me. If I catch their eye and I know they're actually seeing me, that's about the only time. I wave at cars frequently, and usually get an acknowledgment, those people saw me too.
The one that's gonna kill me someday will be the teenager twiddling their phone that drifts into the bike lane. Aside from not riding there at all, I don't know what else I can do.
There was a NoStupidQuestions post about properly locking bikes to avoid theft and it got me thinking. I'm in a rural area so I never leave it anywhere. Any advice or rookie mistakes to avoid if I do plan to ride around a city?
No cable locks. Bad, and you get what you deserve.
Something that's a pain in the ass to cut. Nothing is impossible to cut, but a decent u-lock, good chain, good folder, is the way to go. if you are regularly locking up in a specific place, you might be able to leave a heavier lock (chain) there and not have to haul it around.
Something noisy. A brake disc alarm, or two of them, that go off with movement. Getting attention is good.
If it's an e-bike, take the battery with you.
My goal is to make stealing my bike more of a pain than moving on to the next bike, probably secured with a cable lock from Walmart. It might take five minutes to steal my bike and 20 seconds to steal the next guy's, about all you can really do.
Finally, have insurance. This world is full of fucking assholes.
