Autistic humans have more trouble staying asleep and falling asleep than our allistic peers.

Solid and consistent sleep is essential for our regulation.

What’s your relationship with sleep like?

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Very bad

Takes me such a long time to fall asleep. Staying asleep is not much of a problem for me. But shutting/calming my brain down is a very big task itself. Tiring myself out, helps falling asleep quicker sometimes but somehow I hate the feeling? Not sure why!

Reading wikipedia on autism for Reasons (tm).

I don't get it. Why is it so important that we don't stim? Like, there are some that are contextually inappropriate (loud noises when it might disturb others, for instance), but outside of those few things ... what's the problem with hand flapping, body wiggling, hair twirling, vocalizing in repetitive ways when it's not distracting/disturbing, etc, etc, etc?

Bah, humbug >.< @actuallyautistic

@melindrea @actuallyautistic A lot of coping mechanisms in mental health make NT people uncomfortable. And people really really really don’t like being uncomfortable. (Which I find rather childish tbh)

What’s the biggest myth about autism that my comrades have come across in the course of their self-advocacy?

@roknrol @TheBreadmonkey @n69n @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Not to butt into the conversation but when I first told my SO about the possibility of autism, he’s response was “so what’s the treatment” and I’m still reeling from that shock. We all know about prognosis for autism, why would he ask such stupid questions?? I wouldn’t say I’m happily married. Frankly a bit worried about our future at this point

Doctor suggested I have but I don't think I do because:
I am able to force myself to do things even if I'm not interested in it.
I do not like spontaneity.
When I have a deadline, I cannot leave it to the last minute or anxiety would cripple me.
But I do struggle to pay attention unless am hyperfocused. And I do have executive function challenges. And I have to have a project. And I crave dopamine hits.

Anyone else similar to that?

@niamhgarvey @Zumbador @miffyhelen @actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd I can relate to almost all of this. Before kid, I was just a weirdo recluse. But after kid, every coping mechanism failed and had to really get into what’s actually wrong with myself.
