44 Travels with Herodotus, Ryszard Kapuściński
Written by a Polish journalist this is a book in two strands. In one he reviews some of his past assignments, in the other he reviews his reading and relationship to Herodotus and his Histories. His interpretation of Herodotus was fascinating. He examines technique and proposes that Herodotus should be known as the first journalist and The Histories is the first piece of reportage.
I must re-read Herodotus. @bookstodon

Sounds interesting! I read Herodotus a couple of years ago for the first time because of his reputation as the first historian. It's fascinating how he reflected on his own writing, e.g. how he decided which stories he thought true (only first hand experiences). This felt very modern, despite it being written almost 2500 years ago.

Academy Street
by
Mary Costello (2015)

This book is about an Irish girl who moves to the USA in the early 1960s and how her life unfolds. A well-known theme and as always, the beauty lies in the telling.

It is a touching mix of sadness, loneliness, resignation and love. Wonderful.

The Vacationers
by
Emma Straub (2014)

I really enjoyed this book about a family on holiday and all the tensions & love that entails. It's one of my favorite fiction genres: about ordinary people, told from their different perspectives.

Very well written in an unobtrusive way.

"Only when I was young did I believe that it was important to remember what happened in every novel I read. Now I know the truth: what matters is what you experience while reading, the states of feeling that the story evokes, the questions that rise to your mind, rather than the fictional events described." -- from 'The Vulnerables' by Sigrid Nunez

Very true and also quite a relief! I'm often embarrassed how much I forget of what I read. Now I can use this wonderful quote (if I can remember it...)
