Autistic humans have more trouble staying asleep and falling asleep than our allistic peers.

Solid and consistent sleep is essential for our regulation.

What’s your relationship with sleep like?

@JustPassingThrough@neurodifferent.me avatar

@actuallyautistic @theautisticcoach Terrible. When I was a toddler I was plagued with nightmares & bouts of sleepwalking. From puberty onward I had issues with insomnia. At age 10 my parents gave me an ocean sounds /white noise machine to help. In my 20s & 40s I got addicted to sleep meds. Today I can get 5 hrs a night. More than that makes me groggy. I'm rarely tired. Just active brain! I have a tough time sleeping in hotels or places not my home.

@actuallyautistic Do you ever question whether or not you're autistic? I do in part because some of the traits I have can also be attributed to my brain injury, so I don't know if it's one or both

@catswhocode @pathfinder @actuallyautistic I feel you. As a child I was always set apart from my peers for all sorts of stuff, from gifted/talented to social anxiety & issues with hygiene & being bullied, but I had no idea I was autistic until a friend suggested in 2021 that I look into it. Like you, I tested high. I, too suffered head trauma (car accident) in my 40s & that might have aggravated some sensitivity issues but I'm pretty certain I'm autistic.

Have any of my people ever done an EEG? I'm reading about how those can be used for diagnostic purposes and though I'm already diagnosed, I'm intrigued and kind of want to see what it says about my brain.

@dramypsyd @actuallyautistic I've had 2, both for post-concussion syndrome. No anomalies detected.

How do my comrades react to their things being misplaced or moved?

@actuallyautistic

JustPassingThrough ,
@JustPassingThrough@neurodifferent.me avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic My SO tends to move things around due to his personality. In the beginning of our relationship, I'd come home from a hard day's work to find the furniture had changed, or the living room turned into a construction site. I used to give him hell over it, but trained him over the years to ask me first about the big stuff. Things like cooking utensils being moved to different parts of the kitchen don't bother me so much anymore. 😅

Autistic masking leads to significant harm to an human's sense of identity & mental health

It is a survival strategy that forces us to prioritize NT expectations over authentic self-expression, often leading to profound self-alienation & diminished self-worth.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic This is precisely what cracked me when I lived in Japan. I thought I could hack it since even NT Japanese are conditioned to wear an emotional mask of sorts in public (tatemae -'social face' as opposed to honne, or 'true feeling'). I heaved a huge sigh of relief when I moved here to Korea. Koreans are more free to express their feelings (even negative ones) than their Japanese counterparts.

Media stereotypes about humans need correcting.

BIG TIME.

Which one bothers you most?

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic The suppressed empathy thing is pure, unadulterated 💩.

Hi! I'm hoping for help with an art project exploring autism and 'barriers' (sensory, social, structural) that lead to overwhelm, shutdown, meltdown, exclusion... (Either via masking or directly). I'm starting by compiling a list of things - my own include stuff like being interrupted whilst focussed on a thing, crisp bag rustling, body spray, unnecessary 'chit chat' group emails, arbitrary changes... Any more that any of you would like to share would be much appreciated. Each 'barrier' will be written out within the artwork @actuallyautistic @actuallyaudhd

JustPassingThrough ,
@JustPassingThrough@neurodifferent.me avatar

@actuallyaudhd @actuallyautistic @gri Noisy crowds in enclosed spaces, places with layers of sound (like electronic shops with all the TVs, fans, computers, lights switched on), concerts or venues with the volume up too loud, shouting, loud unexpected booms, crying babies (to a point), argumentative people.

What do frequently cracking joints have to do with Autism and how do I make it stop? 😭

@actuallyautistic

JustPassingThrough ,
@JustPassingThrough@neurodifferent.me avatar

@JeremyMallin @actuallyautistic Probably stimming. I did it a lot as a kid and stopped once I got diagnosed with arthritis. 😅
